I wasted my life. I missed my death

In the summer of the year 1253, three bandits were motivated to steal the goods of a Farmer who lived isolated 3 km from the nearest village. They know that this farmer's stockpile must be full at this period.

"Hey, big brother, are you sure someone lives here ?"

" Yeah, look, his field is there, and his house is in the mountain nearby. Don't worry. I checked when he was the last time in the village; this guy didn't look strong. With the three of us, we can handle this.'' The big Brother said confidently.

Not entirely convinced, the little Brother answers :

"If we still fail again, I'm going to quit this and just work in the old man's hell forge."

The big Brother said with a mocking expression:

" Oh, little brother, in addition to being a coward, you had to be stupid....you want to finish like that old dog, working day and night for nothing."

The last Brother sighed and said :

"ok, stop it now. You two are never tired.''

------

In a small, simple medieval house with only one room lived Anzar and his wife, Tislit. They were a young couple in their thirties. They liked their difficult but simple life on this mountain. Anzar was a rather tall man. He has back hair and deep black eyes, and his skin should be pale like his mother, but with the constant work under the sun, his skin became brown and dry.

During the day, he will work in his field or hunt, while at night, he like watching the stars and going into deep thought. He will also bring his harvest twice a year to the village to exchange it for a different type of goods.

He married Tislit 4 years ago. She is a very charming woman of the Mediterranean type, and she often had a radiant smile that highlighted her beautiful rosy cheeks. She will help in the fields when needed, take care of the house and go every day to the village to look after her sick and old mother.

Two weeks ago, she discovered that she was finally pregnant, which made her happy but also worried because the harvest had been poor for the past two years.

In the beginning, Anzar was not interested in linking his life with someone else and starting a family. He wanted to live alone with what his field brought him. However, the day he becomes an older man or cannot work, he will sell everything and finish the time he has left alone and peacefully.

But when he first met Tislit during one of his visits to the village, love took over.

----

In the middle of the night, while Anzar slept next to his wife, he heard noises coming from where the harvest was stocked. Thinking they were some starving wild animals, he took his axe before checking, just in case.

While leaving, Anzar said with a serious expression :

"Don't go outside. Stay here"

"Be careful," Tislit said while touching her belly.

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.

"Hum," Anzar nodded and closed the door.

The noises were getting louder and louder, but before he could arrive to check the situation, he was ambushed by one of the bandits who stabbed him in the back.

Anzar let out a moan of pain as he turned toward the aggressor. The latter missed his second sword strike. He had difficulty seeing during this night, which allowed Anzar to engage in a close fight with the enemy. The two could barely see each other.

Tislit was alarmed by her husband's scream, and with great hesitation, she grabbed a knife and rushed to where the fighting sounds were coming from.

It was a chaotic scene where she did not know who was a friend or a foe.

Among the cries of pain, she managed to distinguish that of her husband, who at that moment was engaged in a bloody fight against not only one but the three bandits who had gathered.

At this moment, the little Brother realized that the risk was not worth it, this farmer was not as weak as he was told, and the powerful impression he gave didn't help either.

Turning around to flee, he faces a woman who stabbed him in the stomach. He loses his balance and falls over her, strangling her immediately when they hit the ground.

The frightened woman continued to pierce him with the knife on the sides.

''B***"

While saying this out of rage, he succeeds in snatching the knife from Tislit's hand, and without hesitation, he stabs her in the throat with it.

Seeing that this woman has stopped struggling, he gets up with difficulty while suffering and bleeding from the multiple blows received from this couple.

He hurried and went down from the mountain, his fate unknown.

Meanwhile, Anzar managed to kill the second brother with an axe to the head. Still, he has taken a lot of blows and can barely keep fighting. Yet, he goes on the offensive to intimidate this enemy in front of him while being on the verge of collapse.

The big Brother was furious. Things had gone out of control. This was the first time he met a farmer as determined as this one, but his second brother was lying dead on the ground next to him. He found it difficult to leave just like this and flee. He has to take vengeance.

But with this very reduced visibility, it was complicated to avoid the blows. This wasn't a fight anymore but a butchery. The robber with a short sword and the farmer with an axe.

Anzar was very calm. For him, things were clear. This is his territory, his home. Thieves can enter but won't leave as easily as they came.

Death was just one fatality among many others. Dying now or later makes no difference to him as long as Tislit is safe.

Anzar received a nasty sword blow in the ribs. However, he took the opportunity to grab his opponent's arm. Then, with all the strength he had left, he cut the bandit's arm in half using the axe, the big Brother tried to react by pushing him away, but it was too late.

Realizing his handicap, the last of the three turned around and escaped as quickly as possible, To keep his life, no longer having any revenge thoughts in mind or trying to get back the other half of his arm.

Anzar saw that this guy was fleeing, he looked around to find where the ''little brother'' had gone, and he was also very worried about the safety of his wife. But he was excessively injured and fell immediately to the ground unconscious.

-----

Three days later, in a small house on a mountain isolated from everyone, a man is lying on the bed of the only room in this habitat. His body is bandaged everywhere with several red spots where blood is still leaking. That's when he opened his eyes.

The first thing he saw was a woman staring at him. She had an expression full of despair. It was Kahina, Tislit's little sister. When her sister no longer came to the village, her mother was anxious and sent her to check. But she would never have imagined that things could turn out like this.

Anzar asked a single question, putting weight on each word:

"Where is Tislit?"

All he got in response was a young lady breaking into painful tears.

The time came to a stop, the sound of Kahina's cries faded, the horrible pains in his body disappeared, nothing existed, only an immense hatred burned him. He gets up bravely and heads to the door, where he had seen his pregnant wife for the last time.

He went outside and walked a few meters with blood spurting everywhere with every step he took.

He looks to the right, then to the left, and finally raises his head to the sky.

And it is with a neutral expression and a voice straight out of hell that he pronounces the following sentence:

"Fate played on me. With delight. And the sun laughs at my mistake...I wasted my life. I missed my death...I am Anzar Siphax, and spit on those who laugh at me."
