Prologue: State of the world

Prologue: State of the world

“Nobody could have known the ramifications caused by our actions. Now, nothing will be left but a starless sky and the grief caused by our own ignorance. We have doomed ourselves.”

- Anadul, the last great emperor, 201st cycle.

Currently, the world of Tihr is nothing more than an empty shell of it’s former self, having been long abandoned by the gods that rule it. Thousands of years of meaningless and constant wars waged between different faction and species corrupted the land itself.

Masses of trees and fauna have been cut down to provide timber for walls and meat to feed the soldiers. Excessive amounts of death and bodies littered the lands causing undead to rise up and kill everything around them. Even monsters and beasts fought to keep what little territory they had left from being overtaken.

Constant attempts by the astral beings at bringing back the balance have proven themselves fruitless. Nobody wanted peace and everyone wanted war, although each for different reasons. Some just wanted to fight, becoming addicted to the constant adrenaline rush that painting the floor with blood provided. Others were of a more greedy sort, the trading of weapons and armor as well as war taxes filling both their pockets and bellies.

Normally, a war has some sort of rules of conduct, but the last great war fought on these lands was nothing but a way to satisfy people’s growing lust for blood and death. And a great war it was indeed, the reason for it long forgotten.

Disgusted by the way people lived their lives in fruitless slaughter, slowly, but surely, the very symbols of the gods began disappearing one by one until all the stars across the sky faded from existence. Even so, everybody was too busy fighting to notice such changes, or even care for that matter.

Eventually the consequences of the people’s actions became clear as living corruption in the form of monsters and creatures of darkness came forth into the world during the night. Nobody knew if it was the hand of the very gods that have forsaken them that brought these creatures to their world, or if they were a consequence of it. Nevertheless, they did what they could do best. Fight!

The fighting however did not go as well as everyone thought it would. During the day they fought each other and during the night they fought for survival. Soon enough the fatigue and loss of sleep caught up with everyone and the only winner was the darkness of the night.

Realising they could not constantly fight on two sides, they decided that ignoring each other and dealing with the darkness took priority, seeking to end this constant flow of monsters and start anew their beloved wars between themselves.

As the fighting progressed, people soon understood that these “Shadows” were nothing more than mindless beasts that came forth from the darkest of places. They were unending and undying in the form that no matter how many you killed, more would always come back.

By the time they realised it however, their own demise was inevitable. It was simply too late. Kingdoms crumbled and castles fell while sentient beings could do nothing more than struggle to survive.

Yet, what seemed to thrive in all this was nature itself. Somehow, animals seemed to be unaffected by the changes, the darkness also ignoring their existence. Due to the lowered amounts of battles and destruction, the plants and trees also had means to grow and prosper.

The few remaining people alive still struggle to this day to survive, any pretense at a normal life long gone.

Yet, the sun and the moon still stand.

They have not yet abandoned their precious world.

They have not abandoned their children.
