Chapter 55

Chapter 55

Noel grabbed the device and started to run, a playful tone in his voice.

"Shall we talk a little more, Mr. Officer?" he asked, his words echoing with a taunting edge.

His blue aura crackled around him, casting eerie shadows on the walls as he bounded down the stairs two steps at a time.

Each leap sent a jolt of pain through his injured leg, but he pushed onward, fueled by adrenaline and the need to evade capture.

James's voice echoed through the device, calm yet persistent, like a steady beacon guiding the pursuit.

"You haven't thrown the device yet? Interesting! Well then, let's talk."

Noel's smirk was strained, his breaths ragged.

"Do you really think you can catch me?"

His voice carried a taunting edge, though beneath it lurked the weariness of a fugitive cornered yet unyielding.

The building seemed to close in around him, its corridors twisting like a labyrinth.

Doors slammed shut as startled residents retreated into the safety of their apartments, leaving Noel to navigate the maze alone.

The air was thick with tension, mingling with the sharp scent of fear and the faint hum of the city outside.

"Well, for sure, I do," James replied, his tone unwavering.

He spoke with the certainty of one who knew the game wasn't over until the prey was caught.

Noel's mind raced, his thoughts a whirlwind of strategies and evasive maneuvers.

"Didn't you see how I escaped from your team?" he shot back defiantly, his voice echoing off the walls as he pushed himself to move faster.

Outside the building, the city's lights painted shifting patterns on the windows, a stark contrast to the shadows that enveloped Noel within.

Every turn, every flight of stairs brought him closer to the edge of exhaustion, yet he refused to relent.

His pursuers were relentless, and he knew he couldn't afford a moment's hesitation.

"Hmm... first, let me tell you one thing. You're mistaken if you think like that," James's voice, calm and confident, cut through the silence.

"What do you mean?" Noel asked, his voice a mix of curiosity and irritation.

He moved swiftly, his steps echoing off the brick walls as he exited the building and slipped into another alley.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

"As you may have noticed, I hadn’t given them the green light to use their superpowers before," James explained.

"Now, they have full permission. And secondly, what do you think the other officers have been doing all this time?"

"So, it means by now I am completely surrounded?" Noel's heart skipped a beat, his eyes widening slightly.

He glanced up, his breath catching as he spotted another drone hovering above, its mechanical eye unblinking, a silent witness to his desperation.

He clenched his fists, the blue aura flickering around him in response to his growing frustration and exhaustion.

The pain in his leg was a constant, throbbing reminder of his dwindling energy.

"Yes. You guessed correctly," James confirmed, his voice cool and unyielding, echoing with the certainty of a hunter closing in on his prey.

Noel's frustration boiled over.

"Why do you think these weak officers would be able to catch me?" he spat, his voice tinged with a mixture of defiance and desperation.

With a swift motion, he crushed the drone with his telekinesis, the metallic fragments scattering in the alley.

He teleported to the roof of another building, the city lights below a sprawling labyrinth of possibilities and dead ends.

His heart pounded as he scanned the surroundings, searching for any sign of the encroaching officers.

The rooftops were eerily silent, the only sound his ragged breathing and the distant hum of the city.

"Of course, they're only 2-star officers and a lot weaker than you. But their combined powers are useful," James's response was calm, almost patronizing.

Noel's eyes narrowed.

"And how so?" he demanded, leaping to another rooftop, the city lights blurring beneath him.

"For example, sound. A fast and powerful weapon," James's voice echoed through the device just as Noel was midair, about to reach the next building.

Suddenly, three officers appeared below, their presence a synchronized ambush.

One officer shouted something incomprehensible, his voice amplified by the powers of the two supporting him.

The sound wave hurtled towards Noel, invisible but devastatingly potent.

Before Noel could react, the wave struck him.

The force was immense, shattering the glass of the building in his path.

He crashed through the window, the shards slicing through the air around him.

His blue aura flickered, absorbing much of the impact, but the force still sent him sprawling onto the floor inside.

Pain radiated through his body as he tried to push himself up.

His leg throbbed, and his head was spinning from the sudden assault.

He could hear the distant sounds of footsteps and voices outside the building, the officers closing in on him.

"Some officers have heightened senses and body parts, and with the use of enhanced serum, they become more powerful," James's voice echoed ominously in Noel's mind as he struggled to stand.

Before he could fully regain his footing, another officer appeared in front of him.

This one had legs emitting a green aura, clearly enhanced, and had seemingly jumped from the ground to the building in a single bound.

He carried a metal rod, which he swung at Noel with deadly precision.

The metal rod came down with a whoosh, and Noel barely managed to roll to the side, his body protesting every movement.

The rod struck the floor where he had been lying, splintering the wood with a sharp crack.

Noel’s blue aura flared, protecting him from some of the debris but not the force of the attack.

Gritting his teeth against the pain, Noel pushed himself to his feet.

The officer with the green aura moved with lightning speed, his enhanced legs propelling him forward in a blur.

Noel raised his hands, blue energy crackling around his fingers, and managed to deflect the next blow, the rod sparking against his telekinetic shield.

The strain was evident in his eyes, but he maintained his focus.

Summoning his telekinetic powers, he controlled a nearby chair, hurling it at the officer with a flick of his wrist.

The officer dodged swiftly, his movements a blur of green light.

Noel knew he couldn't stay here any longer.

Gathering his remaining strength, he leaped from the building, crashing through the glass and into the open air.

The shards reflected the city lights like a cascade of falling stars.

As he fell, Noel felt the rush of wind and the sting of his injuries, but he pushed it all aside.

He needed to survive.

"And mana ball. Although it is weak, if enough officers support the main attacker, the story changes."

As Noel was descending, a large mana ball struck him mid-air.

Just before impact, he caught a glimpse of a man casting the spell with five others channeling their energy into him.

The force of the attack sent Noel spiraling towards the ground, his blue aura flickering as he braced for impact.

He crashed onto the pavement, pain shooting through his body.

The mana ball had done significant damage, and he struggled to push himself up.

His vision blurred for a moment, and he felt the world spinning around him.

"So, is it enough to catch you?" James's voice taunted through the device still in Noel's hand.

Noel's gaze shifted upwards.

From his prone position, he saw various officers standing on the rooftops above, their silhouettes framed against the night sky.

They were closing in, their presence a testament to the relentless pursuit orchestrated by James.

Blood trickled down his face, mingling with the dirt and sweat.

Every breath was a labor, a reminder of his rapidly depleting strength.

The world around him seemed to blur, the edges of his vision darkening as he fought to stay conscious.
