Lucky Break
[Ch. 1] New Discovery

[Ch. 1] New Discovery

I’d had a pretty average life up until recently. Just your typical 23 year old guy working in the mailroom of a big corporation, trying to make enough cash to afford food and rent. I had always been a superstitious guy, never walking under ladders, or opening umbrellas indoors. I wore my lucky socks whenever my friends and I went down to the park to play some ball. That kind of stuff. Then, at one game, I would have a revelation that changed the course of my life for good.

“Hey Michael!” said my friend Carl. “You gonna play on my team today?”

“I don’t know,” I replied. “I’ve been having a pretty unlucky day so far. I might be bad luck for your team.”

“Nonsense!” he said, dismissing the notion. I obliged to play, and walked out onto the court. Carl passed me the ball, grinning. The other team of three guys cracked their knuckles and necks, doing everything to look tough. Carl and I had a brief meeting to come up with a game plan, along with the other guy on our team, Josh. I said a silent prayer that my luck would change. I willed my lucky socks to give me, well, luck. I didn’t notice at the time, but in hindsight I think I might have felt a strange sensation come from my ankles. The game went great! We beat those tough guys by 8 points, and I never missed a shot. After saying goodbye, I grabbed my bike and rode home. Every light on the way to my apartment was green.

“Man, these socks are really working today,” I said to myself.

“I’ll say. That was some game.” I whip around to see someone I had never met before in my life. He was shorter than me by a few inches, had dark brown hair and sunglasses on.

“Hello Michael,” he said.
