“A City,” they read out loud the sign that was in front of them, pointing towards the right. Looking at a sign pointing towards other direction they read : “A City,” causing them to frown. “Do we want to go to a city or a city?”
They were already quite annoyed, having wandered for days end through the endless sea of sand, only to arrive at a crossroad that went to two places that seemed the same. “What difference does it make?”
“No idea.”
“God damn it, who the fuck does even bother putting up such a sign?”
“It at lest tells us that there are more then one city…”
“Great.”
“Anyway, we will have to decide where to go.” They said with gray eyes. They wanted to stop the bickering for the moment.
“I don’t give a damn.”
“Let us go left then!”
“Why?”
“Just cause, does it make a difference either way?”
“We could ask someone if it does.”
“…who?” they asked waving their hands at barren lands surrounding them.
“Yeah…”
“So, let’s go left!”
“Let us do that.” They nodded.
And so they continued on walking. This time they at least had solid stones beneath their feet and a clear street to follow.
----------------------------------------
They walked for a long time when they finally saw a new sign. It wasn’t a crossroad, just a sign pointing at the two same direction as the last sign did. However, they read differentially. On them were written respectively the words “The City” and “The Other City”, with “The Other City” being the one opposite to the direction they went in.
“More of those damn random signs!! Who even makes them!? And why??”
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
They shake their head, then their gray eyes focus at a spot not too far from the, “Look, there is someone. Let us go talk to them.”
“Finally something expect for sand and rocks and even more sand!”
“I hope they are nice, let’s go have a talk!”
As they got nearer to the person, their golden eyes started to make out what the person looked like.
The person seemed to be riding a horse – no, they were connected to the hoarse, a centaur. Its upper body was just like a human, but at the hip the body started to go over into silver blue scales and into a four legged body of a creature with claws at its ends – a horse. The person, the centaur, a young woman, turned her head towards the figure of steel. “Are you from the other city?”
“The other city?”
“Yes, you are not from this one I believe, so are you from the other city?”
“Which is the other city?” they asked curiously.
“Not this one.”
“What is different at the other city?”
“Everything!”
“Like what?”
“Everything! They have nothing. They are barbarians!” she spoke in contempt.
“What makes them be that?”
“They just are!” she started to get angry. They decided to not ask her more.
“Good to know.” They nodded. Their golden eyes still mustering the centaur as they felt unsatisfied with the answer.
“Would you mind telling us where we are?”
She responded grandly and proudly: “You are on the street leading to the greatest place in the world, you are on your way to the place where the seekers rest, to The City!”
“That is great to hear, thank you a lot!” They smiled, feeling relieved that they where on the right way. “We are on our way then.” They winked.
“Wait,” she called out, “why don’t we travel together?”
“Ugh,” they frowned in their head, as their eyes turned red for a moment. However, they turned back to golden in the next as they said sweetly: “sure, then you can show us the way even.”
“Of course,” they respond excitedly, “follow me!” they said as they went down the street the very same direction they went into already.
“Please walk slower!” they called out, as they saw the figure quickly distancing herself, “we aren’t fast enough!”
“My bad,” she looked awkwardly at the figure of steel, “I am used to people faster then you.”
“Tsh!” their eyes turned red.
“Do you want me to carry you?”
“Leav- Yes we want to!” their eyes turned halfway into golden. They hesitated, “but would we not be too heavy?”
“Don’t worry about that!” she laughed, “jump on, it will not be a problem!” And so they did and it was not. At least mostly not – it was still heavy on the young woman, albeit she could carry them.
And so they continued on their way and for the first time with a companion at that – though not one they completely accepted as of now.
At least, however, the ride made their journey faster and they road till in the evening when they arrived at an Inn. The Inn was called “A Drink To The Trader” and next to the Inn was another two sign and just like on the last one they read “The City” and “The Other City”, pointing to the same two places. But this time the shield to The Other City was clearly dirty, but the shield to The City was polished to the point of shining.
