Book: 2 Ch. 43 Enchanting and the Landwaker seed experiment

With his inner debate settled, the young spell weaver turned his attention towards the rest of the weapons, infusing them with all the usual runes before adding the requested elemental enchantments to them. Both Fabien’s and Quentin’s swords turned out to be quite powerful, due to the four points of damage added by the ‘ordinary’ sharpness rune and the two points given by the ‘trash’ ranked universal damage rune.

Although he had to do a bit of tinkering to work around the light element’s unwillingness to be an actual damage modifier, Regis still managed to follow the guide lines of the enchanters’ tome. Unsurprisingly, both weapons received a unique name after the successful elemental infusion. After he cast charlatan’s wisdom on them, even he felt a tad bit envious.

‘I’m sure they will like it, although Khan’s scorching short swords and Osmond’s upgraded cane rapier aren’t too bad either.’ He praised his own work shamelessly while he cast charlatan’s wisdom on the weapons.

With the swords of the group done, he found himself staring at Letty’s sceptre which he decided to infuse with both the nature elemental and universal damage runes. As a finishing touch, he added an ordinary ranked spell focus rune to the sceptre as well. While still in a creative state of mind, he grabbed some of the iron ingots along with a larger earth elemental stone to create a sceptre for Mary, enchanting it with all the necessary runes.

Unlike Fabien’s secondary weapon, Mary’s sceptre was lighter, thinner and more refined, having an angular design to it. It looked less like a mace and more like a royal sceptre one would expect to see a dwarf wield in some fantasy story. The dark elf checked the results of his tinkering with charlatan’s wisdom, nodding contently at the displayed results.

Mary’s sceptre had an obvious boost to it’s melee damage due to the fact that it was crafted using iron instead of wood, but Regis was sure that Letty didn’t mind such trivialities. The next agenda on his worktable was to upgrade Amanda’s great hammer, Cruz’s staff and Valerie’s whip with the promised enchantments. By the time he was done with those, the amount of iron ingots he was left with became roughly one fourth of what he started his enchanting frenzy with. The results however spoke for themselves.

Thanks to the slight inner math the spell weaver ran through his mind, infusing the three weapons with iron not only increased their durability to a hundred and fifty, but it also raised their base damage value by four points, which was then further strengthened by another two points thanks to the universal damage rune. Both Amanda’s and Cruz’s weapons also gained an additional 2 points from the crushing damage enchantment Regis infused them with as a finishing touch.

There was a definite improvement compared to their previous stats, making it worth the time and effort he put into them. With his companions arms and armour finally done, he could now focus a bit on his own gear. He already enchanted his staff before, so now he was only left with his armour to deal with.

Although it already counted as a decent enough three piece set, each of the parts only had two enchantments on them and their protective capabilities proved to be insufficient when he faced today’s higher levelled enemies. Charlatan’s wisdom revealed the familiar descriptions and stats of his equipment that further strengthened his belief in the necessity of a new round of upgrades.

‘The numbers are slightly lower than I remember,’ he thought to himself. ‘Hopefully infusing them with iron and strengthening the enchantments will be enough. Let's start with the shell first.’ He put the breastplate on a few iron ingots before he laid his hand on it and began to meditate. After redrawing the rune of durability several times, the white symbol slowly turned into a bright green one.

When he opened his eyes he was greeted by chest piece that was now iron grey instead of bronze brown. Of course, he still had to strengthen the armour value increasing rune to ‘well-made’ rank while also adding a bunch of ‘trash’ ranked elemental resistance runes. He then added an ‘ordinary’ ranked lightweight rune to the list to compensate for the slight increase in his breastplate’s weight due to the iron infusion.

Once done with the chest piece, Regis repeated this procedure with the other parts of his armour, spending almost an hour to bring his equipment up to the necessary level. When he cast charlatan’s wisdom on his kit for the second time, it showed much better results than before.

‘That’s much better. Ten points’ worth of armour increase should do the trick for now.’ He thought as he looked at the new stats. Regis finally finished with what he had planned for the night, but sleepiness already left him and he knew better than to force himself to try to sleep. Looking at the left over materials, an idea came into his mind.

Well, two actually, but only the first one had anything to do do with the materials present. He reached out towards the roll of heavy woollen fabric he gained from recycling several tattered robes and brought it over to the transmutation circle used for creating items. The spell weaver imagined several cloaks that were roughly the same size with one of them being slightly larger before he activated the magic circle.

A bright light engulfed the role of fabric for nearly half a minute before the glow of the transmutation circle’s symbols died down, leaving only a bunch of fist sized balls of light floating about. The light bubbles popped one after the other, the newly created cloaks falling on the ground. ‘It looks like I’m good enough to mass produce simple items now, although I doubt that I could have done this with metal objects as well.’ The dark elf mused as he picked up the pile of cloaks. They all had the same colour and stats, which made them all fairly decent in quality and much needed by any traveller.

‘Pretty good as ordinary cloaks would go, but I think we can do better than this.’ He didn’t plan on any heaven defying enchantments for the cloaks, but he still spent all of his remaining earth and water elemental stones to infuse them with an ‘ordinary’ ranked armour value and durability increasing rune along with the utility enchantment that made them waterproof. Inspecting the result of is enchanting frenzy, he had to admit that it was worth the effort. Although cloaks weren’t meant to be thought of as armour pieces, every bit of protection would be welcome in this world.

‘Done and done.’ With the equipment issue solved, he decided to finish the day with a bit of experimentation. The dark elf rummaged through his satchel and pulled out the pouch containing the Landwaker tree seeds Letty gave him before. He believed that he himself would also be able to to create a decent enough seedling if he followed the information he scoured from the tome that recorded the natural origins and alchemic creation of the Landwaker trees. The first thing he had to do was to regain his arcana before checking out one of the seeds to confirm their validity. After some meditation, he cast charlatan’s wisdom on a seed he randomly picked from the pouch.

{Lifeless seed}

{Seed rarity: common}

{Seed quality: waste}

{Consumable/Crafting material}

{The dying seed of a Landwaker’s fruit that still has some magic in it. It can be chewed on as is to regain 5 points of arcana. Alchemists and brewers can use these seeds in their craft as well, but they will never grow into anything when planted into the ground.}

The description was quite in-depth, clearly stating that the seed was only usable as a crafting material or as a consumable in its current state. The young spell weaver kicked off his experiment by placing three seeds into the transmutation circle meant for fusing things. The light of the magic circle glowed brightly as he willed it to life, dying down once again after a couple of seconds as a small glowing bubble was left floating above it. Regis reached out and grab the bubble that popped open, revealing a Landwaker seed that seemed to be alive with a faint light seeping out from it. After trying to identify it using charlatan’s wisdom he could only smile at the results.

{Traitless Landwaker Seed}

{Seed rarity: common}

{Seed quality: waste}

{Consumable/Crafting material/ Plantable Seed}

{The seed of a Landwaker’s fruit that has no discerning traits of its own. It can be chewed on as is to regain 20 points of arcana. Alchemists and brewers can use these seeds in their craft. When planted into the ground, it will slowly grow into a common ‘waste’ ranked Landwaker tree.}

‘I guess this already counts is a small success on its own.’ Regis patted himself on the back in his mind before he began to fuse several trios of dying Landwaker seeds into actually usable seedlings. Traitless seeds were the basis of all the other variants and only needed to be fused with something compatible.

According to the records, if he fused a traitless seed and a few drops of any kind of healing potion, he would get a Landwaker seed which would grow into a tree that had fruits with a slight healing property. A similar result could be achieved if he decided to use a few drops of arcana replenishing potion as the extra material.

Using both potions along with an arcanite stone would result in the best outcome in the form of the tree that had both properties beside having a high yield. Looking at his meagre reserves of arcanite, he would only be able to create seven such seeds without having to spend time on creating more stones. That was far too few, since he knew that he would need three seeds if he wanted to fuse them together in to a higher ranked item, and five if he wanted to fuse them into a seed of higher quality.

With his current skill level, Regis was sure that he could create a ‘well-made’ quality seed, but he didn’t know what would happen if he aimed one quality rank higher. He was also curious to find out what happened if he fused together three plantable seeds. Would they turn into a sapling, or something along that line? Both the possibilities and the questions were infinite.

After taking a few breaths to calm his racing mind, he decided to first fuse three traitless seeds together and see the results. That way he wouldn’t waste too many valuable resources. The result was similar to what he expected as a thumb sized seedling appeared from the glowing bubble that was left behind from his experiment. The seedling had a bunch of hair roots that where roughly one centimetre long and it also had a single tiny leaf near its top. After he cast charlatan’s wisdom on it, an obvious if somewhat lacklustre description appeared above it.

{Traitless Landwaker Seedling}

{Seedling rarity: common}

{Seedling quality: waste}

{Plantable Seedling}

{The seedling of a Landwaker’s fruit that has no discerning traits of its own. When planted into the ground, it will near immediately take roots and begin to slowly grow into a common ‘waste’ ranked Landwaker tree.}

‘I guess it’s pretty much what I expected.’ He admitted before he committed himself to crafting more arcanite stones. It took him some time, but he managed to craft enough for his self-declared quest. He placed one Landwaker seed in the middle of the transmutation circle along with an arcanite stone and he pulled the cork from the vials of lesser arcana replenishing and healing potions he got from Letty before.

The dark elf let a few drops from each fall on to the seed before closing the vials up. As soon as he touched the transmutation circle to begin the crafting process, he could feel that something was very different from his previous experiments. The amount of energy the transmutation drained from him was several times that of the ones before.

It might not have even been half of his reserves, but it was still a lot more compared to his previous trial. The end result however proved to have been worth the hassle. As the glowing bubble popped after the circle’s light died down, a single seed fell into this palm that glowed with a faint orchestra of colours, as if he was playing with strange gemstone. Charlatan’s wisdom was still able to recognise the seed, showing a strange yet comforting description.

{Prismatic Landwaker Seed}

{Seed rarity: rare}

{Seed quality: waste}

{Plantable Seed}

{The seed of a Prismatic Landwaker’s fruit. It can be chewed on as is to regain 25 points of arcana and health. Alchemists and brewers can use these seeds in their craft. When planted into the ground, it will slowly grow into a common ‘waste’ ranked Prismatic Landwaker tree.}

‘A rare seed.’ Regis stared at the important words. It really must have been a rare find across the kingdoms, especially if the number of transmutation alchemists were as few as he was told. Still; it was only a ‘waste’ ranked seed.

This made it obvious that even if the tree managed to grow into its full size, it would still only be a bottom feeder amongst its kind. He would have to create several more such seeds and fuse them together if he wanted something that could grow into a powerful tree.
