71. Retake the camp

Thanks to the mercenaries' familiarity with the terrain surrounding the camp, the formation quickly unfolded according to Avi and Rezalite's arrangement.

The greenskins were immersed in the joy of acquiring a settlement. During this time, they were distressed every day about having nothing to do and could only use goblins as sandbags. As time passed, those goblins who served them gradually fled or died.

Now, these simple and optimistic guys are considering finding a place to have a good fight and loot some slaves to do their work for them.

After enduring the wind and rain for some time, the unmanned tents had gradually become damaged, unable to even provide minimal shelter from the cold wind. As the weather changed day by day, bringing coldness, the greenskins became increasingly eager for a fight—a vigorous fight could not only stretch their muscles and bones but also bring warmth and relieve stress.

Fighting, without a doubt, was the most popular and long-lasting entertainment activity in the greenskin community. And now, the mercenary group had half-encircled them from behind, while these greenskins, busy fighting with their companions, had not noticed anything yet.

Avi and his group approached the camp less than fifty meters away. Here, between the village and the camp, there used to be a fenced-off area used as a stable, but now it had become a flat wasteland.

They crouched in the tall grass, listening attentively to the sounds inside, but apart from the dirty words and meaningless shouts exchanged by the greenskins fighting each other, there was no other information.

"This grass is a good ambush spot, isn't it?" Rezalite reminded with a hidden meaning, "We're already close enough to charge straight to the back door, which is very advantageous for us."

"Yeah, once we take back the camp, I'll wipe them all out."

With that, Avi gave orders to Rafe beside him, "It's time, lead the infantry straight in. Break through the back door and engage with them, I'll command the rest later."

"Alright, boss! But that door took us quite some effort to make, do we really have to break it?"

"Break it."

"Got it!"

Rafe stood up with a two-handed sword in his hands and shouted loudly like a broken gong, "Brothers, follow me, let's go fight those greenskins, drive them out of our territory!"

Such a direct and bold charge immediately aroused the greenskins' alertness. They were excited because humans were approaching, dropping what they were doing, grabbing their weapons, and rushing towards the back door.

"Charge—damn it!"

Rafe raised his giant sword and charged ahead like a big man, crashing into the crowd of greenskins, swinging his sword like a windmill and sending several greenskins flying into the air.

The greenskins directly rushed out of the camp gate to meet him, with many people still stuck in the narrow gate and unable to get out. Judging by the crowded appearance, not even half of them might make it out.

"Rafe, lead the infantry to slowly retreat!"

Although Avi shouted at the top of his voice, Rafe couldn't hear the command amidst the melee with the greenskins. His ears were filled with curses from the greenskins and the shouts of humans, and his mind was blank, only thinking about swinging his sword in the fight.

"Damn it." Avi stood up, "Airen, take all the handgun knights and go around to the battlefield's flank, shoot those greenskins to relieve some pressure on the infantry, but be careful not to hit our own people."

"As you wish, my lord."

"Why not utilize my handgun team for firepower?" Rezalite glanced at Avi, deliberately asking, "The guns on horseback are far steadier than those on foot."

"Not yet. Currently, we need appropriate deterrence more than sheer firepower to prevent the greenskins from acting recklessly," Avi asserted firmly. "We must draw out all these mongrels and deal with them decisively."

"You're right, captain. This tactic is crucial for handling greenskins, compelling those foolish fellows to relinquish their advantageous positions willingly."

Rezalite applauded in agreement and added, "However, we can't solely rely on infantry. In this battlefield, it's often the ranged firepower that inflicts casualties. I'll lead the ranged team to position ourselves first, and when the time is right, I'll authorize them to fire at will."

"I trust your judgment."

The unfolding battlefield situation closely matched Avi's expectations. After Airen led the vanguard knights in several rounds of gunfire against the greenskins, they indeed slowed down their attack momentum, providing the infantry with a precious buffer zone.

Riding alone to the front lines, Airen shouted desperately at the foolish giant immersed in the battle, "Mr. Rafe, his lordship orders you and all the infantry to retreat!"

His voice reached Rafe's ears through the infantry, and despite his reluctance, Rafe decided to comply with the "boss's" command.

Witnessing the infantry gradually retreating, Avi breathed a sigh of relief.

Due to the flanking suppression by the handgun and bowmen, the greenskins dared not rush out all at once. Some attempted to directly attack the ranged team from the side door, only to be met with intense counterfire. Reluctant to miss this rare opportunity for a fight, they converged at the main gate.

At this juncture, controlling the firepower of the ranged team was paramount. Excessive firepower would deter the greenskins from leaving cover, while insufficient firepower would invite a large influx, flanking and encircling their forces.

Under Rezalite's command, the firepower output of the ranged team was finely tuned, completing the most crucial part of the tactic.

Most importantly, those seemingly numerous and well-organized humans were now being steadily pushed back.

"I reckon humans can't beat us at all," declared a greenskin big guy amidst the melee.

"With just a dozen big guys and hundreds of greenskin kids... To be honest, if we rely solely on infantry for head-on combat, our current forces can't match these greenskins," Avi mused to himself, "But with your intervention, the situation has changed drastically."

Drawing his sword and mounting his warhorse, Avi led nine melee knights who had been awaiting orders.

"Are you ready, knights?"

"Yes!"

"Charge—!"

The cavalry skillfully avoided potential traps or obstacles and circled to the flank devoid of ranged firepower. Then, they unleashed a decisive assault on the greenskins' flanks and rear.

Despite their small number, the momentum from the charging warhorses drove them deep into the heart of the greenskin crowd like a wedge. At the forefront, Avi swung his sword deftly, while his horse relentlessly kicked and trampled, rendering the dazed greenskins powerless to resist.

"Charge, brothers, wipe them out!"

Observing their mounted comrades almost severing the greenskin crowd, Rafe promptly led the infantry in a charge, aiming to eliminate all the greenskins.

Fueled by the potency of handguns and giant swords, this objective was swiftly achieved.
