I. The Games we Play

I. The Games we Play

A man wearing professional could be seen walking down a prison corridor. Many prisoners was screaming at him, as he was escorted before a large and solemn cell door. "What's this?" Samuel, the journalist had asked the guard about the large cell. The guard only shook his head and said,"Remember to follow the protocol as it's for your safety and to prevent her from taking advantage of you. She's quite the evil one."

The cell door opened as Samuel walked in, he noticed a girl in strait jacket, with shackles around her ankles attaching to the floor. Messy hair, disoriented eyes, and a smile as she raised her head to look at him. It was creepy, but Samuel  still said, "I'm Samuel, we talked on the phone."

Roma nodded her, and responded, "Of course I remember you. You're here to hear my story before they kill me by lethal injection."

Samuel sat down in front of Roma, taking out a pen and journel. Without a single second wasted, he signaled for her to start.

Hothberg, Oregon, 2014

I remember it as clear as day. My parents had left for a weekend trip to a lake several hours away. Leaving me alone in a pretty big, five bedroom house. Even though my parents told me no friends at the house, I ignored them. I, Roma, as a 18 year old girl felt nervous by myself so I invited my two best girlfriends over. When Rachel and Jessie arrived, we started with the cliche'd "girl talk", talking about the different cute boys in our class. When we reached the end of our talk, Rachel had suggested to invite more friends over. I was apprehensive about it, but it was already too late as many knocks had come from the door. When it was opened, four more had come in; Adam, Josh, Aaron, and Cara. They had brought beer and a certain recreational drug to add to their "fun". I was hesitant, really hesitant about having them here, but Rachel eventually talked me out of it. We gathered around the living room table, talked about graduation and played cards. If I would've known what was going happen, I would say "NO" right then and there, but I didn't.

Once the sun set, we were buzzed and very bored, so Adam had suggested we play a game. We had asked what kind of game he meant; he only pulled out his cell phone. After he fiddled around with his phone, it was flipped towards us, so we could see what "game". As I read it, the more scared and hesitant I was. This was an occult game similar to those ouija boards. The set up was more like a roulette; You draw a six pointed star within a circle, label them in sequence of one, three, five on the left points, with two, four, and six on the other points. In between each point would be three intertwined sixes forming an eye. At the center would be a infinity symbol, where you'd place the roulette on top of it. Outside the circles are six lit candles at the tip of each point.

I read the catch phrase aloud "To win, is to gain a prize filled with desire." The group around me was puzzled by the meaning, but we still drew the pattern on a broke down cardboard box. I was in charge of the candles, while Cara was in charge of writing the rules of the game.

After we had everything ready to go, the rules were read as such:

1. Each player has 13 spins

2. No player shall spin twice in the same turn

3. No player shall be skipped

4. Each number shall be totalled  for each player after 13 turns

5. No player shall manipulate the totalled numbers

6. A penalty shall be given to those who break the rules

We were confused by the rules stated, so we looked for who created this game, no origin whatsoever! Adam didn't seem to care about our suspicions, he simply said "Let's go!" I sat in a circle with my friends as we started the game. No one thought it would be such a painful and horrifying experience...

Adam started if off by flicking the spinner until it stopped at the number four, the corresponding candle flickered in reponse. "What's that?!" Jessie was freaked out by what the rest of us thought was a small breeze. Predictable, Right? Pretty soon, it became abundantly clear after a few more turns, it wasn't a 'mere' coincidence. It really had the haunting aspect described from the site, but it didn't stop the bad feelings creeping inside me. Pretty soon, Josh's turn came, he accidently released his flick too high, causing the spinner to just move a couple of inches, landing on three. Not satisfied with his spin, he attempted to spin again, I tried to stop him, but he did it anyways. The next spin landed on the number 'six', Josh moved his arm to write the number before he started screaming out of nowhere. All of us were startled, looked towards him gripping his writing hand as you could see burn marks appearing on it. We all had the "What the hell" face as we tried to scoot away, but we couldn't move as some force was keeping us seated in our spots.

Enjoying this book? Seek out the original to ensure the author gets credit.

"What the fuck is going on?! I can't move!" Aaron was screaming hysterically, but everyone else wasn't fairing any better. If I had to say, Josh was definitely worse because he the number 'four' burnt on his hand. You could smell the burnt flesh and blood over his wailing.

While I scared out of my wits, I heard Adam scream "This isn't REAL!". Everyone looks like they were losing their mind before we heard a small garbled whisper say "Finish the game."

If the previous two paranormal things didn't crush our souls, this definitely did as Cara responded "We have to finish?.." The fear, dread, or horror in the air stagnated as we couldn't handle it. I know I couldn't as my mind was a blank as I spun the roulette. I don't remember who said it, but someone brought up the point of 'what would happen if one loses?' And that question seeded so much mistrust in each of us, even I felt doubtful towards the others.

After I spun, Cara had accused me of repeating my turn, but nothing happened to me, so she dropped. I couldn't blame her for that outburst at all, you could look at everyones eyes and tell that it was 'every person for themselves'.

Cara just spun, completing our eighth rotation. Suddenly, Cara hunched over and started hacking, she was in pain as tears streamed down her face. Adam checked on her and became really pale as he screamed at the top of his lungs. I saw what he had seen, Cara had hacked up dirt, blood, and nightcrawlers on the floor. Everybody was once again reminded of the situation they was in.

"Why was she suddenly punished?!" Adam was clearly upset the game just suddenly punished her without just cause. Anyone could see she wrote a different number from the original. This had only sparked an argument among us:

Rachel was the first to spit, " You're trying to hurt us, aren't you, Cara?!" She was clearly upset, but her outburst caused a chain reaction in the group.

"I don't want to die!" Cara was clearly in pain as she sounded very garbled.

"Let's try to calm down! Maybe if we play fairly, the game or whatever 'IT' is will let us go!" Aaron tried to pacify the situation, but it seemed impossible as each of us was accusing the other. Even I was guilty of this.

I eventually yelled "SHUT UP!" to stop it all once and for all. Everyone looked at me like they had seen a ghost, if you knew me, you'd know that I am a quiet girl.

"Um, I think we should finish, even if it was to kill six of us, at least one of us will be alive. That one person, whoever it may be, can spread our story to others outside!" I managed to make a point to everyone else as they calmed down. This led Adam to spin and thus we continued the game. After everyone had completed their 13 turns, we totalled our scores.

Adam                 77 Josh                  82 Aaron                73 Cara                  102 Rachel               97 Jessie                 99 Roma                 107

In the end I had won. What happened next was the most traumatising event of the night.

As the game ended and I had won, a certain relief washed over me. Soon, a breeze was felt among us as the candles were blown out. The smoke from the candles intensified, forming a figure of a head with horns. It looked right at me as it opened it's mouth and swallowed me. I assume I had lost consciousness the moment it touched me.

The dream I had afterwards was vivid. I was in a room, lying on some form of platform. Below was a boiling black lake, above was a black mist. The mist started to twist and churn until it formed a figure with black goat legs, an upper body of scales, yellow eyes, and black horns. I remember trembling as I couldn't move, the figure floated before me, smiled as he caressed my cheek.

"Oh Roma Roma Roma."The figure shook his head as he made fun of me before continuing "CONGRATULATIOOOONS!!! You are the winner of 'Devil's Roulette'!Thus I need to give you a prize...hmmmm what to give you? Ah, I know! I'll give you a pieeece of MEEEEE!" It said to me as he pierced his own chest and pulled a still beating heart out. I remember dread, a sense of helplessness as he slid the beating heart into my mouth, forcing me to swallow it.

It looked jubilated as he said "Roma, what I gave you is something 'special'. In order for you to awaken it, you have to kill and eat the hearts of the other players. If you don't, you'll eventually suffer as it eats you inside out and you die." It faded away as I reawakened in my house, surrounded by my sleeping friends.

"Do you honestly believe that?" Samuel asked Roma as she awoke from her flashback.

Roma smiled as she looked straight at Samuel and asked,"Shall I continue?"
