Li's Fishful Fate
The Faithful Encounter

The Faithful Encounter

Zhuang-Chang and his fiance, Feng-Shi were walking in a city as part of their honeymoon, when they suddenly saw a man who appears to be a fish vendor selling fish at the docks. Zhuang saw that there was a vendor selling a carp.

"Carp!," the vendor said. "Delicious carp. You should buy it and try it. Eating the flesh of this carp is guaranteed to make men more potent during intercourse. It also makes women's skin beautiful. And you're guaranteed to be full."

Zhuang responded by saying, "I guess...I will buy it then".

After Zhuang bought the fish, the vendor asked him, "So what are you going to do with that fish now?"

"Excuse me?"

"Are you going to fry, boil it, cook, or eat it raw?"

"Of course...I wouldn't eat it raw.."

"So you're going to cook it then?"

"No.."

Zhuang tossed the fish off the docks into the water.

"What was that for?!", the angry fish vendor responded.

"I believe that releasing the fish would bring me good fortune..."

"You know...it's people like you that make me angry."

Although Zhuang was nervous, his fiance, Feng, successfully convinced him to ignore the man whom she had deemed as a mere nuisance. They left the docks. Later in the evening, while they were walking on a long bridge on their way home, they bumped into the fish vendor.

"How did you get here?", Zhuang responded.

Without saying a word, the fish vendor pushed Zhuang and Feng off the bridge into the water. He laughed after he heard a loud splash and the couple drowned to their death.

"Fish are for eating," he laughed, "Especially that fish".

A few months later, Li Chao, the great grandson of the builder of that very bridge, had a vision of two people dying from a fall at the bridge. He went to the bridge late at night to sleep there for a day. While he slept there, he felt very cold so he woke up.

When he opened his eyes, he saw the green ghost of Zhuang-Cheng . Although Li Chao felt slightly uncomfortable, he remained calm since he was not easily afraid of the supernatural.

"Who are you?", he asked.

"I am Zhuang-Chang....A few months ago, I died at this very bridge...with my fiancé due to an unfortunate incident..."

"And what kind of incident? Was that...a tragic accident....or a suicide?"

Zhuang-Chang frowned sadly in response.

"Neither...It was murder."

"A murder?", asked Li Chao.

"Yes, I was murdered by a fish vendor...for releasing a fish I bought.."

" Namu Amida Bu. May I bless your soul."

"Before, I depart from you today," the ghost continued, "I'd like to find the fish that I saved....."

And so, Li Chao, went around the docks and asked as many people as he could about the fish vendor selling carp. But no one was able to help him or even give him a tip about the vendor. While thinking and walking around the town, he accidentally bumped into a girl in a bright orange dress. And for some reason, he saw an colorful aura coming from her face.

"Sorry madame...."

"Hey....I don't like when people called me madame! It's just too polite! "

"Uh..."

And the girl in the bright orange dress walked away.

However, Li Chao, decided to quietly follow the girl. After he followed her for a while, they ended up at a pond. And that was when the girl snapped her fingers causing a cloud of mist to appear. Li Chao could hardly see anything until the mist cleared away. And then he saw the same girl but scales had suddenly appeared on her face.

'A fish?', Li thought.

"The fish that the Mr. Zhuang-Chang wants me to find."

And then the girl noticed the Li Chao.

"Why are you here?", she asked curiously.

"Well, it's sort of complicated....or you like a fish for real?"

She nodded vigorously.  "Well, I was just--uh---I am a fish!"

"I know----I just felt this weird aura coming from your face.....when I bumped into you earlier today."

'Oh......"

"Yeah..Maybe I should just----"

"No..Don't leave. It's been a while since I have talked to a human--"

"Do you mean 'never' when you said 'a while'?"

And suddenly, Li Chao felt a pinch on his right ear. "You're funny but kind of mean", said the carp-spirit jokingly.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

She released his ear from her strong pinch and then smiled at him.

"Would you like to do me a favor and stay here for a few days to hang out with me? I get kind of lonely by myself..."

"Of course......."
