7. Into the Void

7. Into the Void

The air was thick with anticipation as Master Wuyi gathered us in the training courtyard. Today was different. He had decided it was time for a field test, a mission to an uncharted realm known only as the Void—a desolate space rumored to be inhabited by creatures of darkness and malice. The five of us—myself, Xiaoxiao, Fengqi, and the newcomer Fuyao—stood ready, our hearts racing with excitement and trepidation.

“Listen closely,” Master Wuyi began, his voice steady. “This expedition will test your abilities. In the Void, you will encounter various small monsters. Your goal is not just to defeat them, but to learn and adapt. Trust in each other and use your skills wisely.”

Xiaoxiao’s eyes sparkled with determination, while Fengqi stood aloof, a confident smirk on his face. Fuyao, calm and composed, adjusted the straps of her sword, exuding an aura of strength. I felt a mix of emotions, knowing that we were stepping into the unknown.

With a wave of Master Wuyi’s hand, a shimmering portal opened before us. We stepped through, and an unsettling silence enveloped us. The Void was a vast expanse of darkness, broken only by eerie glowing stones scattered across the ground. Shadows danced along the edges of our vision, teasing our senses.

Suddenly, the silence was shattered by a rustling sound. From the darkness emerged a small creature—its body no larger than a dog, covered in spiky green fur with beady red eyes. It snarled, revealing razor-sharp teeth.

“Looks like our first challenge,” Fengqi announced, drawing his sword with a flourish. “Let’s see what you’re made of, Xiaoxiao.”

“Don’t underestimate it!” I warned, readying my stance. But before I could react, Fengqi lunged forward, aiming to strike the creature down.

The beast darted to the side, agile and quick. It snarled, and with surprising ferocity, it lunged at Fengqi. In a flash, Xiaoxiao sprang into action, her sword glinting in the dim light as she intercepted the beast.

“Stay focused!” she shouted, her voice cutting through the tension. With a swift motion, she slashed at the creature, sending it tumbling back.

“Nice move, but you need to work on your timing,” Fengqi replied, a hint of arrogance in his tone.

“Maybe if you didn’t rush in without thinking!” Xiaoxiao shot back, her eyes narrowing.

As the creature recovered, Fuyao stepped forward, her expression serene. “Let me handle this.” With a fluid motion, she channeled her energy, summoning a burst of light that engulfed the creature. It howled, retreating into the shadows.

“Impressive,” I remarked, feeling a sense of admiration for Fuyao’s control.

We pressed deeper into the Void, encountering more creatures—small, grotesque beings with elongated limbs and malicious grins. Each time, we fought as a team, honing our skills and learning to anticipate one another’s movements.

Stolen novel; please report.

But the atmosphere shifted suddenly. Xiaoxiao, caught in the fray of a particularly vicious creature, miscalculated her strike. The beast swiped at her, claws raking across her side.

“Xiaoxiao!” I shouted, rushing to her side as she stumbled back, clutching her wound.

“I’m fine,” she gasped, though her face was pale. “I just need a moment.”

“No, you’re not fine!” I insisted, glancing around. Fuyao stepped in, kneeling beside Xiaoxiao.

“Let me help you,” Fuyao said gently. She began to channel her energy, creating a soft glow around her hands. “This will ease the pain and help your wounds heal.”

Xiaoxiao winced as the light enveloped her, but I could see the relief in her eyes as Fuyao’s magic took effect. The wound began to close, and I felt a surge of gratitude towards Fuyao.

“Thank you,” Xiaoxiao murmured, her voice steadier now.

“Just don’t be reckless,” Fuyao replied with a faint smile. “We’re a team, remember?”

The tension from the earlier confrontation dissipated, and we continued, but the creatures were growing stronger. Each battle was more challenging than the last, and I could sense the weariness creeping into our group.

As we neared the heart of the Void, we faced a larger beast—a grotesque amalgamation of the creatures we had fought, towering over us with gnarled limbs and a monstrous roar.

“Stick together!” Fengqi commanded, his bravado faltering slightly. We formed a tight circle, weapons drawn, ready for the fight of our lives.

Xiaoxiao, emboldened by Fuyao’s earlier support, took a deep breath. “Let’s attack from all sides!” she proposed, her spirit ignited.

“Agreed,” I said, locking eyes with each of them. “On my mark!”

We launched into action, coordinating our strikes. Fuyao’s light flared as she unleashed powerful energy blasts, while Fengqi and Xiaoxiao flanked the creature, their swords dancing through the air.

With every strike, we could feel the creature weakening, but it retaliated fiercely, swinging its massive claws. I barely dodged one, adrenaline coursing through my veins.

“Now!” I yelled, and we all aimed our final attacks. The combined force of our efforts shattered the creature, leaving a blinding flash in its wake.

Breathing heavily, we stood amidst the remnants of the battle, a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration flooding through us.

“Did we… did we really just do that?” Xiaoxiao asked, her voice filled with disbelief.

Fuyao nodded, a proud smile on her face. “We did it together.”

Just then, a low growl echoed from the shadows. More creatures were coming, drawn by the noise of our battle.

“We need to retreat,” I urged, feeling the weight of our victory slipping away.

Master Wuyi’s voice suddenly rang in my mind: “You’ve proven your skills, but the real test lies in knowing when to fight and when to withdraw.”

“Back to the portal!” Fengqi shouted, urgency in his tone.

As we ran, I glanced back at Xiaoxiao, her face set with determination despite her earlier injury. She had fought bravely, and I felt a renewed sense of respect for her.

Once through the portal, the familiar surroundings of the academy welcomed us back. We collapsed on the ground, panting and battered but victorious.

“That was intense,” Fengqi said, a hint of admiration creeping into his voice.

“Next time, let’s be smarter about our strategies,” Xiaoxiao suggested, her eyes glinting with resolve.

Fuyao looked at us, her expression a mixture of pride and concern. “We’ve all grown stronger today, but we must remember that every battle carries a lesson. Together, we can face whatever comes next.”

As we caught our breath, I realized that this expedition had not only tested our strength but also forged a deeper bond between us. We were more than just a team; we were becoming a family, ready to face the trials ahead, together.
