“Next!” A cold voice drawled in the silence, and Langa opened his eyes.
He was standing in a familiar hallway, in front of the 36th Floor Overlord’s office. He opened the door and walked in. The vampire Floor Overlord, Lady Mira, was sitting behind her desk, and upon his entry, she looked up, and smiled at him.
“Langa Zulu. I’m glad that you made it,” she said. “You’re one of the few that I remembered clearly.”
The office was just the same as before, and it was a little jarring to think that he was no longer the same person he was when he stood here seven days ago. So, it had been seven days since the end of the world, huh? Strange, usually, time dragged for Langa, but this past week had both gone by very fast, and also felt like a whole lifetime.
“I survived thanks to your advice, Lady Mira. Thank you,” Langa said politely. The last time he was here, being polite to her had earned him some extra advice. He should thank his sister for teaching him to respect other people, as that had helped him.
“Please. I’m sure that it was on your own merit,” she muttered, looking at a large, clear glass screen on her desk. “Wow! You did extremely well, Langa. Hold on, check your rewards, there should be many of them.”
As soon as she said that, he called up the system interface, and messages began appearing in front of his eyes, and he started going through them, one by one.

He balled his hands into fists. It was as if Makoto never existed, as if everything he did with the team, helping them and saving them, counted for nothing. Langa bit his lip in anger, he could not even be happy that he got the highest contribution as that was probably due to his side quest, and he could not have done all that alone. He shook his head to clear his head of the team, of Makoto and Kindaro before he lost his mind again.

There were so many items to unpack and look at later, but Langa stared at the last message in disbelief. If 20% of a world's population could be players, that meant that Earth was quite overpopulated compared to the other worlds. But the main issue was that so many people had died. 220 million players survived out of 8 billion? How was that possible? The tutorial was challenging, sure, but was it so bad that less than 5% of the players survived? But then again, he thought about the fact that he would have died had Liv and Sigurd not come to save him and Makoto at the beginning of the tutorial before he had bound his soul. He would have died without finding his Calling or learning anything about this new world. On top of that, if their team coordination had been off, he would have died fighting Calpu, as Makoto had saved him at that time. He also realised that he could have easily died at the altar fighting against Babio had he not awakened his attribute. There had been so many close calls that he had survived, but evidently, other players were not so lucky.
Langa suddenly realised just how fortunate he had been to end up in a team with strong people like Liv and Kindaro. He shuddered at the thought of what would have happen had had ended up in a team with weaker people like Ghol? Or what if he had been in a team with only people from earth, who knew nothing of the Tower, or how to survive the tutorial? They would have all been wiped out for sure. He hoped and prayed that none of his family members met that fate.
He closed his eyes, “Thank you, Lady Unrivalled for placing me in a tutorial with people who could protect me,” he whispered. The Unrivalled had saved Earth from suffering the same fate as Zamone, being overrun by a Void Eruption and turning into a Void world by integrating it into the Tower. He'd heard from Sigurd during the tutorial that a lot of worlds that were fighting against corruption prayed to The Unrivalled to be integrated into a Tower, but not all of them got saved, so he was grateful that she had chosen to save Earth.
Lady Mira’s fangs showed when she smiled, “Good. Our Master appreciates your gratitude.”
Langa nodded and then blinked as he reread that last message. Wait! Was that right? He was in fourth place? He knew that he was not weak, but surely, he was also not that strong, right? “How am I in fourth place? I’m sure that there are much stronger people from blessed and natural worlds out there?” he asked in shock.
“It’s not a ranking of strength, Langa. Strength without achievements is useless in the multiverse. Your overall ranking in the Tower will almost always be judged according to the karma earned. Karma is everything, the measure of your soul, and your impact on the worlds,” she explained.
He did not fully understand it, and he wondered if he was just not confident enough in his own strength. He'd relied on Liv a lot in the tutorial, but he had also worked hard, training himself, growing stronger and protecting his teammates. The more he thought about it, the more he started to accept that running on the track might not be the only thing he was talented in. Was he being conceited now? He decided not to dwell on the issue and Lady Mira continued issuing out his rewards.
"Hold out your hand for me, let me connect you to the Dent," Lady Mira said. "The hand with the comcer."
"What's that?" Langa asked, as he reluctantly held out the hand on which he wore the comcer bracelet.
"The Deiwos Network Tower. It connects all the Deiwos Towers, and you can access the karma store, pay to watch higher-level players completing quests and clearing dungeons, watch the Celestial Clash tournaments and access the leader boards, among other things. You can also share recordings of your adventures and charge people to watch them if you have a vicomcer,” she told him, placing her hand over his comcer.
All that sounded like online shopping and a streaming service to him. ”So it’s like the internet?" Langa asked, trying to make sense of her words.
”Aargh, every world has its version of the deities’ network, so I suppose that’s what you have in your world. Just go to the store and get your rewards,” she said dismissively.
Langa pressed the new button on his comcer, and a whole new interface popped up over his comcer. It looked like a projection from a computer screen, but he did not think Lady Mira would appreciate it if he said that. The first page was a welcome screen.

A username? He always hated choosing usernames when playing games. He decided to use his full name. “Langelihle,” he said.
Wait, Langa thought, something suddenly occurring to him. How come the system listed his name as Langa, not his full name, Langelihle? Surely, since the system was The Unrivalled Tower Master herself, then she knew his full name. Was it because he had always preferred to go by Langa? Did the system know even that much about him? The more he thought about it, the more he remembered his first day in Lady Mira's office. Back then, she'd asked him to think about who he was before the system connected to him, and he had identified himself as Langa Zulu. Was that why?

All of these options seemed interesting. He was hoping that there might be a way in all these menus to contact his family and make sure that they were okay.
“Can I ask you something, Lady Mira?” Langa asked. “How can I find my family? Is there any way to do that through the Dent? Can I call them on my comcer maybe?”
Lady Mira looked at him pityingly, “Sorry, but you need to have a person’s mana signature in order to be able to contact them on your comcer. Perhaps on the 1st Floor, you can try a clairvoyant, to see if they can divine their location for you, but…some of them are frauds, so you should be careful.”
The only people whose mana signatures he had were his tutorial teammates. “Okay, what about these forums? If I can post asking them where they are, they can respond, right? They have access to the Dent?” Langa tried again.
Lady Mira tapped the desk with her long fingers, “Langa, you’ll be verified on the forums because you’re in the top ten. There is no private communication system on the Dent, everything you post is public to everyone in this, and all other Deiwos Towers. All that will do is alert unsavoury people to the fact that you have a family that they can use to get to you. The Dent has anonymous options as well, and people with mental skills can change their usernames to imitate your family, and trick you into giving them karma or items. It’s not worth the risk at this time. Get stronger, and if they are alive, you will find them, especially if you have a good deity watching over you.”
As much as Langa wanted to protest, he had no desire to bring harm to his family when trying to find them. He refused to accept that there was no way to find them at this time. He would see on the 1st Floor if anyone could assist him in finding his family or he would travel all over that world himself to find them. He nodded to Lady Mira, and continued to look at the menus on his comcer.
He chose to open the karma store, for now, he could check out everything else later. It all seemed very interesting, and he could not wait to learn more about the Tower, the Dent, and how everything in this new world worked.

If he got nine choices, that meant that the person in first place would get twelve choices, while anyone below the top ten only got two choices. Somehow that felt unfair, and he wondered how many extra rewards the person in the first place was entitled to. Langa snorted, reading the interface again. They called it a reward, but the players still had to pay karma for the rewards. Still, he figured that after his Calling, this was probably the most important choice that he would have to make before he entered the Tower officially. Before looking at the rewards though, he looked at the top ten list and felt his jaw drop.

Langa still could not believe that he had made the top ten. It was mainly thanks to the karma that he got from Makoto, so he was unsure whether he should be happy about this or not. But, Liv was amazing. Even though Langa had surpassed him in contribution for the final tutorial quest, he still managed to snag first place. He wondered what kind of side quests Liv had done to earn so much karma. He then stared at the names above and below him. Pranav...was it the Pranav he knew, or was it someone with a similar name? Either way, he would not be surprised if it was the one he knew. That arsehole was very resourceful and good at using other people to get what he wanted, just like he had done to Neo. Was Neo okay? Were the two of them together during the tutorial since they had been together on that day?
He shook his head, putting it out of his mind, and focusing on the name below his. Fi Kindaro III. The man who killed Makoto. Of course, he was here, and it seemed as if his siblings were strong as well, the three of them dominating the tutorial. Langa clenched his fists, that bastard would pay for what he did, and he would make sure of it. There was no way that Langa would let him go. He would hunt him down, and kill him as many times as he needed to until he was completely dead. He took a deep breath, trying to steady his increasing heartbeat.
"How is this ranking fair, Lady Mira? I mean, I started with only 10 karma, but demigods start with much higher karma, right?" Langa asked, the thought occurring to him.
Lady Mira rolled her eyes, "It's not ranked by total karma. It's ranked by karma earned during the tutorial. Even if a demigod started with 5000 karma, if they only earned 1000 karma in the tutorial, then they would not have made the top ten."
Oh, that made more sense. Alright, now he could look at his choice of rewards and choose two of them. These were apparently things that The Unrivalled thought would benefit him the most, and he was sure any of them would be great rewards. However, he wanted to make sure that he chose, not the best rewards, but the ones that suited him and his personality the most.
"How do I even know what to choose? Are you allowed to help me?" he asked Lady Mira.
She shook her head, "Sorry, kid, you have to make the choice yourself. If you want my advice, choose something that you can only get here. If it's something that a deity can gift you, I think you can let it go and hope to obtain it in the future. But some things that will be in those choices, you will never have another opportunity to obtain them again in your mortal life," she said, wearily sitting back on her chair.
"Sorry, I'm taking too much time, right? I'm sorry that I keep asking so many questions. You still have other players to see," Langa apologised.
"You are really too polite," she laughed, her fangs glistening in the light. "This office is an instance. I am talking to all the surviving players of the 36th Floor at the same time. It's good practice for any seraphim to get used to things like this before they shed their mortal coil. Take your time. Before you ask, no I can’t tell you if your family made it, I’m not allowed to give non-public information about players away."
Not really understanding how this worked, or what exactly seraphim were, Langa nodded, and opened the karma store tab on the comcer interface.

That was a lot but Langa had to choose only two of them, though. He took a deep breath, looking at each of them in turn. Why was there nothing to boost his resistances? He would have loved something to boost his lightning resistance or his mental resistance, but there was none of that on the list. Still, he had to make his choice.
Langa did not even consider the last choice. He did not want anything that brought him into the sights of The Onslaught of The Dark Void. He shuddered just thinking of that one moment that he had spent trapped in the Void, it had felt like his mind was being tortured by scorching flames. No matter how good the Shroud was, he would not take it.
While the Blessing, Divine Skill, Divine Artefact and especially the Divine Elixir were undoubtedly amazing rewards, they were all things that he could gain if he was bound to a decent enough deity. Of course, the Blessing and Elixir were from gods, and there was no guarantee that he would be chosen by a god and not a constellation, Langa still chose to discard them, because of what Lady Mira said. There was an opportunity here to obtain something that he would never be able to gain again.
There was one reward that his eyes kept darting towards. A reward that was only available to deities and chosen seraphim, not mortals. He knew that it was not the best reward out of all of them, but the Divine Domain kept calling to him, like he should choose it. A place that instantly regenerated his health until it was full? A domain that belonged entirely to him, where he could go when things got hard and no one could disturb him? His sister was not with him anymore, so he needed a new safe space for when the claustrophobia hit him, as it could start at any time and from anywhere. The Divine Domain could be good for his mental health, a place where he went to escape from everything until he was calm enough to continue, or even a place where he could escape to when he was in danger. It said that it was accessible at any time and anywhere. It was even a place where he could sleep all day without players or even deities disturbing him. His lazy self was salivating at the thought, but he also thought that if he could teleport out of a potentially fatal battle into his Divine Domain, and then reemerge from it fully healed, then it would be an overpowered reward. But was it the best choice for him? He should probably not treat an entire domain of a deity as a private hospital room to sleep and escape to, right? He decided to look at the other choices before making up his mind.
The other choice that he was considering was the Discipline Affinity. Kindaro had a full affinity. Langa would not choose death affinity like him, but a full affinity would be good to have, and it would undoubtedly add to his strength. Lots of skills scaled with affinity, as did his attribute. Depending on which affinity he chose, he could deal devastating amounts of damage to any being. This was something that he could only get here, the system had been very clear that while resistances could be increased to a certain extent, there were no other ways for mortals to increase their affinity.
Finally, he looked at the two gifts from The Unrivalled Tower Master, the class change and the Resurrection Stone. He discarded the class change, his Fighter Class clearly stated that it could be upgraded at level 10, so even if this could be an amazing class, he could still get another class. Plus, while The Unrivalled seemed like a decent deity, Langa was not willing to tie himself to her just yet, not before seeing what the others had to offer. The Resurrection Stone was much more tempting for him. He could die five times and still live again, and that was on every Floor! This was a good reward, probably the best out of all the ones here. From what he had heard from Sigurd and the others during the tutorial, deities gave their bound players Resurrection Stones, and the standard was three respawns per Floor. This meant that five was a generous gift.
In the end, Langa had three rewards that he wanted: Discipline Affinity, Divine Domain and the Resurrection Stone.
"Okay, I choose Discipline Affinity," Langa said, of the three, his first choice was easy.
[Please select a discipline to increase affinity.

This too was a no-brainer for Langa. "Lightning," he said. This was the main discipline that he used, and he could only salivate as he imagined how much more damage he could do with Tonare's Thunderbird's Stunning Strike. If affinity had helped with resistance, he might have chosen mental affinity, but as it stood, having full mental affinity with negative mental resistance could potentially be dangerous for him.
[-1000 Available Karma deducted]
[Congratulations! Your Lightning Affinity has been increased to 100%. All magic spells, skills, attributes or items that belong to the lightning discipline with cause 100% more damage. All lightning-adjacent activities will be 100% more effective]
Langa felt a wave of electricity coursing through his body. It was not like when he got damage by the lightning backlash, no, it felt different, so he closed his eyes and felt the mana inside his body. Warmth washed over his body, and he felt strange. It was as if he could suddenly see the path of every nerve ending in his body, how they transmitted the signals in his body, and every single electric pulse in his body was visible to him as red and blue lines inside his body. He could even feel the nerve impulses in his brain. It freaked him out a little bit, and he let the mana go. He would have to test that out later.
"Holy shit! That was freaky," he muttered opening his eyes.
For his final reward, Langa contemplated whether to take the Resurrection Stone or the Divine Domain. Finally, his desire for a safe space that helped him regenerate his health won over his self-preservation, and he made his choice. "Divine Domain."

"What?" Langa shouted in shock. His precious private hospital and sleeping area away from players and gods was inaccessible? Had he just wasted his reward for nothing? "Fuck, I should have chosen the Resurrection Stone! I can't even enter my own Divine Domain!"
Lady Mira stood up abruptly, "Did you just say Divine Domain?"
"Yeah?" Langa said, turning back to her.
"You lucky little human," her pale face was even paler as she watched him with hungry eyes, licking her lips. "How well did you do in your tutorial to get that? You'd need the approval of at least two members of The Great Quartenity to gain a Divine Domain, even after Tier 10. It's one of the main requirements for a mortal to shed their mortal coil and become a deity."
Langa looked at her in confusion. It was something so important that two of the first gods needed to approve it before a mortal received it? He had not done anything outstanding to gain the attention of the passive gods, Life and Death, but had he somehow gained the approval of The Onslaught of The Dark Void along with The Unrivalled? Langa shuddered once more. He did not want to be anywhere near someone who created that detestable Void. "Is it such a big deal?"
"Of course it is. A Divine Domain is a deity's place of residence, away from interference from any other deity. I'm a Floor Overlord because I'm stuck as a seraphim, I failed to become a constellation. I collected so many stars, amassed the karma, completed The Infinite Challenge and all of the other requirements, but no matter how hard I tried, I still could not obtain a Divine Domain," she said, frustration and bitterness still evident in her voice. "Hey, keep it a secret, okay, seraphim are technically still mortals, so we are not bound by the same rules as deities when it comes to interfering with mortals' lives. Mortals have been killed for less. I have no idea how you even got one without any stars, it should be impossible," she warned him.
Stars. Was it the Void Star that the FireFox Queen gave him that enabled him to get this domain? He wanted to ask, but something stopped him from mentioning the Void Star to Lady Mira. The FireFox Queen's soul had been forced to Ascend because she gave him that thing. It could be dangerous. "Okay, thank you for the warning, Lady Mira. Are we done?"
She cleared her throat, "Just about. I will be transporting you to the 1st Floor shortly, and you will be randomly placed into a starting area controlled by a guild. The guild is obligated to assist all new players with a place to stay and some information for seven days, nothing more. The guild receiving you might make an interesting offer, but you're free to decline it," she told him.
Langa frowned, "How do you know that they'll make me an offer? I thought you said we'd be placed randomly?" he asked.
She scratched her dark hair, and looked away, "Floor Overlords have things they need too, so if a guild were to offer something in exchange for any top ten players being placed in their starting area...well...no harm done."
Wow, so there was corruption even in the Tower? Langa should not have been surprised at all. Lady Mira handed him a small white tile and sat back down. "You can go out the way you came in. You will be led into the teleportation wheel that will take you to the 1st Floor. Place that pass into the slot on the teleportation wheel."
Langa nodded, and started towards the door. He decided to check his status first. The first thing that he noticed was that the experience required to level up from level 10 to level 11 had increased tenfold! That was a lot of monsters to kill and quests to complete. In the end, it seemed that the tutorial really had been a playground.

For those Shrouded by a deity, you can only see their values if the deity you serve (or the deity that your deity serves) is of a higher rank than that mortal’s deity. You can also see the number of available respawns that the mortal has.

That was much better than before. Satisfied, he decided to ask one more thing before leaving. "Last time, before the tutorial, you gave me some solid advice. Do you have any advice for me about climbing the Tower?"
She seemed to ponder this for a moment. "You're in the top ten, so you will have the attention of many deities, and many mortal guilds will try to recruit you or harm you as well. Choose wisely, if you will. I know talented people like you like to be independent, but not everyone can be successful without support from deities, like Unbound Jareeksa," she told him. "But you must also remember that the Tower rewards effort, so the more help you get, the less karma you earn. The best advice I can give you is to bind yourself to a powerful deity and join a strong guild. If you don't want to do both, do at least one of those, okay?"
That seemed like solid advice. Langa would not mind joining a strong guild and cruising comfortably through the Tower with their protection, he was not sure about the deities, and he decided that he needed to do some research first before deciding if he wanted to choose any of them, and which one.
"Thank you, again, my lady," he said with a bow and then stepped out the door. He was finally entering the Tower, and he had no idea what to expect.
