Prelude - Purgatory…
A conglomerate of memories floats beyond time and space muttering to itself. “Oh no what just happened! Wait, where am I? Am I dreaming?” but the words fall silent. It tries to move, to speak, but it cannot. Its very being is nonexistent in this place. No sight, taste, touch, smell, or sound can be conceived by it. To it there is no light or dark, no white or black, not even a form of background. It is as if those concepts never existed. Not a single sense exists, not even the sense of time. For only its mind and soul remain of its previous body. It is stuck alone with nothing but degrading thoughts.
“The last thing I remember is… I don’t know.”
Unable to even hold a thought the entity continues.
“What is my name again? Tom? Susan? Ice-cream? Wait Ice-cream isn’t a name… is it? Ice-cream is good right? No it’s bad! Bad for you or bad tasting?”
Unbeknownst to the lifeless existence of swirling thoughts and emotions a separate being watches it from another world. This being ponders about the dead human that has formed into a conglomerate of memories inside purgatory. “Another earthling has died… Hmmm maybe... just maybe this one will work. Either way I will force it upon him.”
This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
“No I think ice cream dumped me once and that’s why it’s bad… Yeah that sounds right! No no no that’s not what I’m supposed to be thinking about! I need to wake up from this dream to go do that thing I’m late for!”
The decades pass by, or do only a few seconds pass? To this grouping of thoughts and fading memories it does not matter. When the memories begin to finally fade into oblivion and dissolve into nothingness like the world around it something or someone rips it from this place to put it in a new world.
….
The fading set of memories is unleashed into a new body and a new world. “Oh wait I can see darkness again! And some type of weight, where am I? Actually this doesn’t feel right; it doesn’t even feel human… What am I?”
For now this entity will remain clueless of its past its future, but slowly both sides will reveal themselves.
