Chapter 24: The Past

Chapter 24: The Past

It was around 9 years ago, on September 15th, when the world as Sam knew it began to change. She was only 10 years old at the time, but she would never forget the events that transpired in the following days.

It all started with news reports of a mysterious virus that was spreading through human contact. At first, the reports were scarce and there had only been a few cases reported. But as the days passed, the number of reported cases began to rise. Despite the growing concern, Sam's parents didn't seem too worried. They carried on with their lives as normal, going to work and school, and trying to keep their family safe.

But on September 17th, a new report came out that would change everything. It was revealed that the virus wasn't a virus at all, but a parasitic organism that had made its way into the human population through a supply chain of fruits. The parasite, once ingested, would make its way into the bloodstream and eventually reach the host's brain. There, it would slowly shut down motor function, primarily affecting the motor cortex located in the frontal lobe of the brain. As the days passed, speech would deteriorate into sounds and screeches. It was a terrifying and deadly disease, and it was spreading rapidly.

In response to the outbreak, schools were shut down as a precautionary measure. But it was too little too late, the damage had already been done. Supermarkets were already empty, hospitals were overflowing with patients, and supplies were running low. Sam lived on the outskirts of a busy city and she could see the fear and panic in the eyes of her parents. They were worried about the safety of their children and their own survival as the world around them crumbled.

As the days passed, the sense of unease in the household grew stronger. Her parents became increasingly worried, constantly checking the news and discussing options for their family's safety. They soon made the decision to keep the children inside, away from the unknown dangers lurking outside. The once carefree days of playing outside were replaced with fear and uncertainty. Food became scarce, and their supplies were tightly rationed as they prepared for the worst. The radio broadcasts grew increasingly dire, warning people to stay in their homes and avoid unnecessary contact with others. But as the panic spread, many disregarded the warnings, desperate to flee the major cities and the chaos that ensued.

As the days passed, the situation continued to deteriorate. The parasite spread rapidly, infecting more and more people. The streets were filled with the sounds of screams and moans as the infected turned into zombies. The government issued curfews and ordered everyone to stay indoors, but it was too late. The outbreak had already taken hold and there was no stopping it.

Sam's family huddled together in their home, listening to the chaos outside. They could hear the sound of cars crashing, buildings being broken into, and people being attacked. They saw the infected wandering aimlessly through the streets, their eyes blank and their bodies contorted in strange ways. They were no longer human, but something else entirely.

The family had to make a decision, to stay in the house and hope for the best, or to try and make a run for it. They decided to try and leave, they packed a few supplies and set out into the unknown. They had to be careful, as the infected were everywhere, they had to avoid the main roads and stick to back alleys and side streets. They saw people who had barricaded themselves in their homes, they saw others who had turned into zombies themselves.

As they made their way through the city, they could see the destruction caused by the outbreak. Buildings were on fire, streets were littered with debris and abandoned vehicles. They came across a few survivors, but they were few and far between. They eventually made it out of the city, and into the countryside where the outbreak hadn't reached yet. But the damage was done, the world was changed forever, and they knew they would never be able to go back to the way things were before.

The next few months were a struggle, as they tried to survive in a world overrun by zombies. They had to scavenge for food, shelter, and supplies. They had to fight off the infected and avoid the bands of looters and criminals who were taking advantage of the chaos. But somehow, they managed to survive. They were a family of survivors, and they were determined to make it through this new, terrifying world.

It was the middle of the night when the zombies first breached the farmhouse her family had been staying at. Sam had been trying to sleep, but the constant sound of her parents and older brothers fortifying the doors and windows made it impossible. Her parents had been discussing plans to leave the farmhouse in search of safety, but they knew it was too dangerous to travel at night. They would have to wait until daylight to make their escape.

The first sign of trouble came in the form of a low, guttural moan that seemed to come from just outside the house. Sam's mother immediately hushed her father and brothers, trying to keep the noise level down in the hopes that the zombie wouldn't be attracted to the house. But it was too late. The moaning grew louder and more insistent, and soon the sound of shuffling feet could be heard outside.

Sam's family quickly realised that they were surrounded by a herd of zombies. They had been attracted by the noise of the fortification efforts and were now closing in on the house. Her father and brothers scrambled to finish barricading the doors and windows, but it was clear that it wouldn't be enough. The zombies were too many and too strong.

The family huddled together in the living room, trying to come up with a plan. It was Nick, Sam's younger brother, who suggested they try to escape through the attic. It was a desperate plan, but it was the only one they had. Sam's father quickly led the way, pulling down the attic ladder and urging the rest of the family to follow.

The attic was cramped and musty, but it seemed to be the only safe place. They could hear the zombies breaking through the barricaded doors and windows downstairs, their moans and screams filling the air. Sam's mother tried to keep the youngest children calm, but it was a losing battle. Nick started to cry, and the sound seemed to attract the zombies even more.

It was chaos. The zombies were everywhere, breaking through the walls and floorboards in their search for the living. Sam's family was getting split up, her mother and younger brother’s were trapped in one corner of the attic while she, her father and older brother were trying to find a way out. Sam could hear her mother and brothers screams as she thought they were being bitten, and she couldn't do anything but hide as her family was surrounded in the surrounding rooms. It was a nightmare, she couldn't even find a way to escape, she was trapped in the attic room while the zombies were everywhere.

She could hear her parents fighting desperately to protect the family, but their efforts were in vain. The zombies were too many and too strong.

Sam stayed in the room for hours, but she knew she had to find a way out, but the door was blocked by a heavy armchair and the windows were too small for her to fit through. She searched frantically for something to defend herself with, but all she could find was a small pocket knife. She knew it wouldn't be enough to fend off the zombies if they found her.

She could hear the zombies getting closer, their moans and growls growing louder. Sam's mind raced as she tried to think of a way out. She remembered a small window in the attic that she had seen earlier, and she knew that if she could make it there, she might have a chance to escape.

With her pocket knife clutched tightly in her hand, Sam made her way to the attic. She pushed aside the boxes and debris that were blocking her way and finally reached the window. She pushed it open and climbed out onto the roof, her heart pounding in her chest.

She could see the herd of zombies milling about below, drawn by the sounds of her family's screams. Sam knew she had to be quiet and move quickly if she wanted to survive. She crept along the roof, trying to stay low and out of sight. She could hear the zombies breaking into the room she had just escaped from, and she knew she had to put as much distance between herself and them as possible.

Sam sat on the roof for hours, her heart heavy with the knowledge that her family was gone. She could still hear the screams and moans of the zombies below, and the occasional crash as they broke through the remaining barriers of the house. She had never felt so alone, and she couldn't shake the feeling of guilt for being the only one to have survived.

As morning began to fall, Sam knew she had to leave. She couldn't stay on the roof forever, and the zombies below showed no sign of leaving. She gathered what supplies she could find and prepared to make her escape.

As she made her way across the roof, she saw a tree nearby that she thought she could climb down. She made a run for it, her heart in her throat as she heard the zombies getting closer. She reached the tree and began to climb down, her hands shaking with fear.

She was halfway down the tree when she heard a zombie growling from below, she looked down and saw it had caught her scent and was making its way towards her. Sam knew she had to move faster. She scrambled down the tree as quickly as she could, her feet slipping on the branches.

Finally, she reached the ground and ran as fast as she could, her heart pounding in her chest. She didn't stop until she was far away from the farmhouse and the zombies that had overrun it. She was alone, her family was gone, and the world had become a terrifying place overrun by zombies. That is what Sam remembered had happened, but what actually happened on that day.

It was chaos, the zombies were everywhere. The family had barricaded themselves in the old farmhouse, but it was only a matter of time before they broke through. The mother's heart was racing as she watched her husband and sons desperately trying to hold the doors shut. She could hear her youngest, Nick, crying in the background and she knew it was only a matter of time before the zombies were alerted to their presence.

As the zombies started breaking through the barricades, the family panicked. They ran upstairs, trying to find a way to escape. The mother could hear her husband shouting for everyone to stay together, but the noise was deafening and she couldn't see where her children had gone. Suddenly, she heard her oldest son, Mikey, scream for Sam. The mother's heart dropped as she realised that her 10-year-old daughter had become separated from the rest of the family.

Her husband turned to her, his eyes filled with fear and determination. He asked if she had seen Sam and she lied, telling him that she had seen Sam get bitten when she was with her. She begged him not to go back for her, knowing that it would mean certain death for him. Mikey was inconsolable, he refused to leave without his sister, but the mother managed to convince him that she was gone. They had to leave her behind, it was the only way to survive.

The mother felt guilty and heartbroken as they fled the farmhouse, leaving Sam behind. She couldn't shake the image of her daughter's face from her mind, and she knew that she would never be able to forgive herself for the lie that she had told. She could only hope that somehow, Sam had managed to survive but knew that leaving Sam meant certain death.
