24. Welcome Abroad

Sebas stepped in, his steps echoing in the empty room, clashing against the cement walls. Despite the whole room being empty, he still had to take a good look around, just in case something was where it shouldn’t be.

"Quite the daring young lad, are you?"

A tall, sturdy man walked in past the receptionist, who gave him a sweet look that she didn’t bother to hide. The man must have been a bit of an idiot, since he failed to notice it. Sebas tried to get a grasp of who he was just by looking at him.

Short brown hair, brown eyes—nothing too abnormal—just a mark on his cheek—that’s odd. No matter; play it cool.

"Daring indeed, you bet I am," declared Sebas, pointing at himself with his thumb. "I need to show you my abilities to enroll, right?"

The man nodded, "Yes, but we also need to see your status window."

Without a moment’s hesitation, Sebas called out to it, showing his ‘character’ information. Sebas got scared the moment the supervisor’s jaw fell open, his eyes bulging out of his head.

"Level 42!?"

His shout echoed harder than Sebas’ steps did, scaring the receptionist out of her daydream—at least she seemed to be daydreaming.

Sebas could only play it cool, pretending it was no big deal, but he thought his whole plan was about to go out the window.

"Kid, I won’t ask, but just so you know, that alone is enough to get you at least D rank, but we just can’t push the note that far, you know?"

Sebas nodded, trying to look upset, forcing his mouth to arc downward, but it just wouldn’t do it. The feeling of dodging a bullet sure did a trick on him.

"Yes, it’s alright. Let me show my abilities, and then we can proceed."

He turned around, hiding in his own shadow, then creeping around the room from shadow to shadow, switching between them at speeds that only someone at least as strong as him could see clearly.

After getting tired of it, he jumped out, pulling out his sword, doing some moves, riding himself off of it, switching to his daggers, cutting away at what could only be imaginary enemies—but they were real for him. This was only the beginning, since he could also use some concealing magic, debuffs of sorts that he hadn’t yet mastered, and other skills Charlotte talked with him about.

The man could only watch in awe, still unable to come to terms with the fact that such a young person could achieve such a level.

"But then again, this event sure is something fit for the younger generations, the whole game interface. Anyway, I think you expected to at least be questioned, which we have to do." He put his hands together after bringing them behind him. "Go ahead, how did you level up so much?"

Sebas felt his whole plan go to shit again, like being struck by lightning twice in a row. He shuffled his thoughts around, trying to come up with the best possible lie.

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

What would Mark have said? That bastard knew how to lie when he had to.

He awkwardly scrathed his head, displaying a face that clearly spoke about his not exactly understanding the process of leveling.

This kid is surely faking it; better to keep an eye on him. For now, let’s play the fool as well.

"You see, I come from the northern part of the country, and monsters kept attacking, so I took the matter into my own hands. I reached this point because I somehow managed to get experience from someone else’s kill, a so-called Mark from my school."

Better to lie by telling some altered truth.

"Mark, huh? That Mark?"

The supervisor was intrigued, as seen by a slight curvature in the corner of his mouth. He knew who Sebas talked about, perhaps more than he dared show.

"Interesting. Were you friends?"

Sebas looked around, acting the part of an uninterested guy.

"Nope, we were classmates but not close friends. To be honest, I hated that guy for one reason or another. He was a dick."

Once again, Sebas mixed slight lies into the truth he spoke, good enough to throw someone off.

"I guess that’s the way you found yourself in his squabble. The dragon, I believe, was his last battle before death took hold of him."

These last words woke something within Sebas; the veins in his palms bulged.

"Yes, that’s right. I sort of managed to throw something at the lizard, and the system thought I did something there."

They both laughed it off together as some dumb joke, to the point where their stomachs were almost hurting.

"You sure are one lucky bastard. Well, that explains the stats and level, but what about your using a sword and daggers in such a manner?"

"You see, I watched too many videos on the web, and things like assassins have always appealed to me."

The man nodded, finally letting go of his hands, and turned around to exit the room.

"You passed; you’re one of us now. The lady by the door will guide you through the formalities."

Sebas thanked him, and the man responded by lifting his arm without turning. He walked out, once again passing the lady, wishing her a good day, and again ignoring the obvious signs.

"He sure pretends not to see."

"Did you say something?" asked the woman, to which Sebas answered by moving his hands left and right.

They went back to the lobby, where Sebas finished the process and was given a key to a certain building.

"This is where you’ll live until you decide to move out."

She handed him a map of the whole place, with the apartment printed on it.

Sebas took his luggage and sprang for his place, giggling to himself on the way.

"Finally, freedom!"

People around him gave him some weird looks, but he didn’t care; he was happy that it all worked out.

The entire building was brand new, just like the main building. He sure sat there, almost dropped his bag, and stared. He couldn’t believe he got to live there for almost free.

"Time to move!"

He ran in, got his key from the reception, and then took the lift up. Some other people were there as well, each going to a different floor, but he couldn’t care less.

His room was at the end of the corridor, on the third floor. Just as he unlocked the door, a familiar face came out from the door before his. The pinkish hair gave it away, and once again, Sebas found himself wanting to die.
