Author’s Note: Writing Experience & New Project

Hey guys, Young here.

Thanks for having me.

I’m actually rather hesitant to share this, for many reasons. Yet considering I’ve reached Chapter 50, I think I can justify sharing the core of what I’ve learned from writing this fiction; what weakness and how to solve it.

Hopefully it will give you fellow authors some benefits, and many of you fellow readers some insight.

If I'm missing something, feel free to add.

----------------------------------------

Background

I’ve started writing this fiction as a way to practice writing. I intend to be better before I continue Ein Gard, as that fiction required me to be better, otherwise I won’t do it justice. I considered it Heavyweight class due to the opponent and the legacy the MC inherited.

While I wrote Lesser Throne of Seventh Heaven as a mean to practice, it is however, not a throw-away fiction. I used quite a lot of hidden clues in each chapters, and the planning was intensive. However, I also note immaturity in my writing, glaring weaknesses.

I thanked all reviewers for their input.

Hopefully some of you can update your review? *Cough* 0.5 *cough*

----------------------------------------

Weakness and Solution

Allow me to write this in list form, as I’d like to keep it simple.

Weakness in writing, with solution at the end:

1. Weak beginning.

I’ve noticed my fictions, the beginnings were somewhat lacking. I failed to capture a large portion of audience and keep them engaged. That was a fatal mistake for any author.

Solution: Fiction have to quickly jump into action and begin with things that really matters.

2. Slow Pacing and Delayed Plot

Reading on this site? This novel is published elsewhere. Support the author by seeking out the original.

When writing, I often lost myself in the story, and thus failed to follow the set plot by chapters. In fact, the story got dragged, perhaps wearing the readers. You can observe this error during the obstacle course, and the whole Knight Apprentice Test.

The fault lies in unnecessary attention to details, on something not important. The “Show, don’t tell” taken to the extreme, in the way that it sabotaged the story.

Solution: In writing, I’ll go on with telling first, then add show for important things. As for plot, it will have to keep moving each chapter.

3. Too many characters at once

I introduced many new characters all at once. That was a mistake. I’ll keep this in mind, and introduced the bare minimum characters next time.

Solution: The “circle” around MC ought to be kept to a minimum.

EDIT: Relate first, expand in time.

4. Author’s care (too much)

As an author, I realized I’ve become somewhat attached to some characters. That might be a mistake, as I need to keep a sense of reality in the story. A story about war, would have to entail life and death, to both sides, yes?

I’m not writing a fairy tale, afterall.

Solution: Writers have to become ruthless, somewhat.

5. From lightweight to heavy.

I’ve started writing this with “Keep it Simple” in mind. However, I made a mistake. I put the library option, how utterly stupid. From then on I had to make plans so detailed I felt rather stressed out.

It would be seriously easy if the MC chose the 10x core absorption, but considering his personality… Should I as an author interfere at the time? Ha, too late.

Another thing would be the clues I put in each chapters. I tire myself. It felt like these clues were unnecessary. Readers pretty much read each chapter once or at most twice, yes? It's normal to miss the clues.

Tell me if I’m wrong.

Solution: Reduce the clues, simplified the planning, focus more on mass-producing chapters!

Let it be fun!

6. Mind-numbing Planning

I’ve the tendency to plan things so much, it’s numbing me. The planning was somewhat unorganized. While I do have the plot and story parts arranged, the details were all over the place.

In addition, sometimes contradiction occurred.

Solution: I’ve adopted the way of planning in fractals, in way similar to mind-mapping. By observing the general structure of a tree, it came to me; I could use this in writing.

I’ve started using it recently. It’s simple, organized, easy to remember.

To fellow authors: I have simplified ways to plan based on the same concept. If you’re interested, PM me and I’ll be happy to write and send you.

Not writing it here due to it being inappropriate. It was similar to a Magician’s trick, if you will. The whole thing loses its magic once unveiled.

Announcement

I’ll take this opportunity to announce my new project.

By no way it means that I’ll be stopping Lesser Throne of Seventh Heaven, no. It simply mean that it’ll be hard for me to write more than two chapters a week. I’ll still try though. It’s fun doing a mass update every once awhile.

New project, I’m taking on Xianxia novel next.

It was a practice fiction, a lightweight before taking on ‘The Beast’. That thing’s super heavy. I’ll write till chapter 21 before posting it here by the end of June. The reason I’m announcing this would be, to force myself to commit in writing it.

The title would be “Ancestor, Wake Up!”

Synopsis? Well, youngsters really like to rush, huh. What are you rushing for? Old man like me has to sleep and rest. Let me think about it later!

That’s all from me. Hopefully I didn’t cause you guys to fall asleep. Thanks for reading this.

Hope to see you guys later!
