Chapter 24: A miracle

In “Light & Shadow Duel,” players are split into Team Light and Team Shadow, competing to collect glowing orbs. players must bring them to their base to score points. The team with the most points after 15 minutes wins, with a sudden-death round if there’s a tie.

Connor squared off against Elara, his sharp blue eyes locked onto hers. He could see the confidence radiating off her, but he also noticed the subtle tension in her movements, the way she tested her footing.

Elara mirrored Nova’s abilities seamlessly, a faint aura of starry energy encircling her as she made the first move. She dashed forward, a glowing fist aimed directly at Connor’s chest. He sidestepped with the fluidity of a leaf caught in the wind, letting her momentum carry her past him. His counter came swift, a low sweeping kick aimed at her legs.

She’s fast, Connor thought as Elara leapt over his attack, landing gracefully and spinning to face him again. But she’s not unpredictable.

“You’ve got some moves,” Elara said with a smirk, lunging at him again. Her fists glowed brighter as she unleashed a rapid flurry of strikes, each infused with pulsating energy.

Connor dodged and weaved between the attacks, his agility making it seem as though he was dancing rather than fighting. He found openings to counter, slipping in quick jabs and kicks that disrupted her rhythm. His strikes were calculated, aimed to unbalance her rather than harm.

She’s strong, but she’s mimicking Nova’s power, not her instincts, Connor noted, ducking under another glowing punch. I can use that against her.

Elara, frustrated by his evasiveness, changed tactics. She feigned another strike but instead created an orb of starry energy in her hand, tossing it toward one of the glowing orbs on the platform. The energy lassoed the orb, pulling it toward her.

“Oh no, you don’t!” Connor barked, using his telekinesis to tug the orb back mid-air. The two forces collided, causing the orb to hover and flicker as their powers battled for dominance.

“Just give up already, Connor!” Elara growled, her focus splitting as she lunged at him while maintaining her hold on the orb.

He released his telekinetic grip, allowing her to stumble forward with the sudden lack of resistance. In one fluid motion, he sidestepped her again, grabbed her arm, and twisted her momentum into a throw. She hit the platform but rolled back onto her feet, glaring at him.

“Nice try,” she muttered, brushing dust off her sleeve. “But I’m just getting started.”

Connor smirked, his confidence growing. She’s underestimating me. Good.

Elara dashed at him again, this time faint trails of starlight coiling around her legs to enhance her speed. Connor barely had time to react as she closed the distance, her fist glowing brightly as it slammed toward him. He blocked it with both forearms, the impact reverberating through his body.

That was close. I can’t let her keep the tempo.

Connor shifted his weight, spinning around her strike and landing a clean palm strike to her side. Elara winced but retaliated instantly, spinning into a roundhouse kick that forced Connor to backflip out of range. Her next move came fast, a burst of starry energy launched directly at him.

Reacting on instinct, Connor used his telekinesis to redirect the blast upward, the light scattering harmlessly into the sky like fireworks. “You’re going to have to do better than that,” he taunted, grinning as he darted forward.

Their clash became a blur of movement, Connor’s agility and counters against Elara’s raw power and precision. Every strike, block, and dodge was met with equal intensity. When Elara tried to grab an orb, Connor would intercept with a swift kick or telekinetic pull. When Connor lunged for an orb, Elara mirrored his movements, cutting him off with glowing barriers or sharp strikes.

She’s relentless, Connor admitted to himself, breathing heavily as they circled each other. But she’s also getting frustrated. If I can keep her off-balance, I can find an opening.

Elara, for her part, was equally focused. He’s annoyingly fast, she thought, her gaze narrowing. And he’s reading me too well. I need to find a way to break through his defenses.

Their fight reached a crescendo as they both lunged for the same orb, their fists colliding mid-air with a shockwave of energy. The impact pushed them both back, skidding to opposite edges of the platform.

Connor and Elara stared at each other, chests heaving, sweat dripping from their brows. The platform beneath them hummed faintly, a reminder of the high-stakes game they were playing.

“Not bad for a copycat,” Connor said, a teasing grin tugging at his lips.

“Not bad for a show-off,” Elara shot back, her own smirk forming despite her exhaustion.

They both stood ready, neither willing to back down, the tension between them crackling like the very energy they wielded. The arena erupted with cheers as Nova and Lucio became streaks of energy, their movements so fast they appeared as a comet of fiery starlight and a bolt of living lightning. The crowd roared with excitement, their eyes struggling to follow the blurs that zipped across the floating platform. Each clash sent shockwaves rippling through the air, sparks and glowing embers flying in all directions.

Lucio grinned as he zipped around the arena, his form crackling with electricity. His feet barely touched the ground before he vanished again, appearing behind Nova in an instant. “You’re slowing down, Nova!” he taunted, sidestepping her punch with a burst of speed and spinning to dodge her follow-up kick. “What’s the matter? Can’t keep up?”

Nova growled in frustration, her comet-like aura intensifying as she propelled herself forward. “Slowing down? You wish!” she snapped, throwing a blazing uppercut as she closed the gap. Lucio ducked under it effortlessly, his laughter echoing in her ears.

Stay calm, Nova, she told herself, though her clenched fists betrayed her growing anger. He’s just trying to throw you off. Don’t let him get inside your head.

Lucio darted across the platform again, zigzagging through the air as if mocking her. He narrowly avoided one of her strikes, laughing as he snatched an orb mid-motion. “One for me!” he called out, holding it up before launching it toward his base with a precise bolt of lightning.

“Not happening!” Nova roared, her aura flaring as she shot toward the orb like a meteor, intercepting it just before it reached his team. She hurled it back toward her own base, forcing Lucio to blur past her to block it.

The crowd exploded with cheers, their excitement mounting with every twist and turn. “Look at them go!” Torrin shouts as he sits next to Finnrick in the stands. “This is insane!” Finnrick exclaims while Delilah sits nearby in astonishment.

Nova launched herself at Lucio again, fists blazing with star fire. He blocked her strikes with his forearms, the collision of their energies lighting up the platform like fireworks. Each clash sent out ripples of energy, drawing gasps from the spectators.

Lucio smirked as he parried another one of her strikes, leaning in close. “You’re predictable, Nova. I thought stars were supposed to shine brighter than this.”

That did it. Nova’s frustration boiled over, and she launched a furious flurry of punches and kicks, each one faster and stronger than the last. Lucio dodged and weaved, his movements almost lazy in their precision.

He’s so cocky! Nova thought angrily, her eyes narrowing. I just need to land one good hit, and he’ll stop grinning like that.

Lucio, for his part, was having the time of his life. She’s good, but her anger is slowing her down, he thought, darting around her and tapping her shoulder mockingly before zipping away again. “Gotta be quicker than that!” he called over his shoulder with a laugh.

“You’re infuriating!” Nova shouted, her voice a mixture of rage and determination. She thrust her hands forward, releasing a burst of starlight energy that forced Lucio to stop in his tracks to avoid it.

“Finally!” she thought, dashing toward him, her fists blazing. But Lucio was ready. He sidestepped her strike at the last second, their energies colliding as they both pivoted and exchanged rapid blows.

From the stands, Sensei Ino watched with great interest, his sharp eyes following every movement. Both have immense potential. He mused, leaning forward slightly. But it’s their ability to think under pressure that will determine the winner.

As Nova and Lucio clashed again, the arena lit up with another dazzling burst of energy. The crowd was on their feet, roaring with excitement. Every time one seemed to gain the upper hand, the other countered, their speed and power perfectly matched.

Lucio grinned as they broke apart, both breathing heavily. “You’re tough, Nova, I’ll give you that,” he said, his voice laced with mock admiration. “But you’re still not fast enough.”

Nova wiped sweat from her brow, her eyes blazing with determination. “You talk too much, Lucio!” She shot back. “Maybe if you focused on fighting instead of running your mouth, you wouldn’t need to cheat your way to victory.”

Lucio chuckled, electricity sparking at his fingertips. “Cheating? Nah, this is just skill, Nova. But keep trying, I’m sure you’ll land a hit someday.”

Their auras flared as they launched themselves at each other again, the platform shaking under the intensity of their battle. The crowd’s cheers grew deafening, the energy in the arena reaching a fever pitch as the two combatants prepared to give it their all.

Ray continued to squared off against Rad, the tension between them thick as the crowd’s cheers echoed around the arena. The platform trembled slightly under Rad’s immense strength as he lunged forward with a wild swing. Ray barely managed to duck under it, his exosuit whirring softly as he spun around to deliver a quick jab to Rad’s side. The hit barely fazed the powerhouse, who immediately retaliated with a thunderous shove, sending Ray skidding across the platform.

“Stay down, Ray!” Rad barked, irritation creeping into his voice as he stepped toward an orb on the edge of the platform. “You’re not strong enough to take me on!”

But Ray gritted his teeth, his body aching from the impact as he pushed himself back to his feet. I can’t let him win! He thought, determination flaring in his chest. “Nova, Connor, and the whole academy is watching. I have to hold my ground.

As Rad reached for the orb, Ray dashed forward with surprising speed. His exosuit’s thrusters flared, propelling him into Rad just as the older boy’s fingers grazed the glowing sphere. The collision sent them both tumbling, with Ray managing to wrest the orb away and kick it out of Rad’s reach.

Rad’s jaw clenched as he pushed himself up, his irritation growing with every passing second. “You’re really starting to annoy me, Ray,” he growled, his muscles tensing as he charged again.

This time, Rad caught Ray mid-dodge and lifted him effortlessly, hurling him across the platform like a ragdoll. Ray hit the ground hard, his suit sparking slightly from the impact. The crowd gasped as Rad stomped toward another orb.

But once again, Ray’s voice cut through the tension. “Not so fast!” he called out, dragging himself up with shaky limbs. “I’m not giving up, not now, not ever!”

Rad’s frustration boiled over as he turned, veins bulging in his neck. “Why won’t you stay down!?” he shouted, charging at Ray. But Ray was ready this time. Using Rad’s momentum against him, he ducked low and pivoted, grabbing Rad’s arm and pulling him into a perfectly executed grappling takedown. Rad hit the ground with a thud, stunned as Ray quickly scrambled to his feet.

The crowd erupted Into cheers, the stands vibrating with their excitement. Even Penelope and Olivia exchanged surprised glances, their voices momentarily drowned out by the noise.

Rad slammed his fist against the ground as he got back up, his anger reaching its peak. “You’re really pushing it, Ray!” he snarled, his fists clenched tightly.

Ray stood his ground, breathing heavily but refusing to back down. I just have to keep him off the orbs, he thought, his emerald green eyes locked on his opponent. “As long as I can do that, we still have a chance.”

Before the two could clash again, Penelope’s voice boomed across the arena. “Fifteen minutes are up!” she announced, her tone sharp and commanding. “It’s time for sudden death!”

Olivia’s cheerful voice followed. “Let’s make this interesting, everyone!”

The arena darkened as Penelope waved her hand, summoning a pitch-black bubble that enveloped the platform. Inside, Ray’s vision was completely obscured, and he stumbled slightly as the ground seemed to shift beneath him.

When Ray opened his eyes, he found himself alone on the platform. The darkness had lifted, but the crowd was eerily silent, their anticipation palpable. Two orbs now glowed faintly on opposite ends of the platform, one golden, one black. Ray’s heart sank as he turned and saw Rad standing across from him, his imposing figure illuminated by the faint glow of the orbs.

Rad cracked his knuckles, his expression dark. “Looks like it’s just you and me now, Ray,” he said, his voice low and menacing.

Ray swallowed hard, his heart pounding in his chest. Me, against Rad!? he thought, sweat beading on his forehead. This isn’t good. He’s stronger, faster, and he’s not going to hold back.

In the stands, Sensei Ino leaned forward, his sharp eyes focused intently on the two boys. This is where it gets interesting, he mused silently. Let’s see what they’re truly capable of.

Ray clenched his fists, his exosuit glowing faintly as he steadied his breathing. “Alright, Rad,” he said, forcing himself to sound braver than he felt. “Let’s settle this.”

Ray’s thrusters roared to life as he shot forward, a white streak blazing through the air. Rad, his powerful frame barreling ahead like an unstoppable freight train, narrowed his eyes with determination. The two clashed in the center of the platform with a resounding crash, their opposing energies colliding in a dazzling spectacle of sparks and shockwaves.

Ray darted around Rad with agility, narrowly avoiding a crushing punch aimed at his side. He countered with a quick strike to Rad’s ribs, his exosuit enhancing the force of the blow. Rad grunted but barely slowed down, swinging back with a wide hook that Ray barely dodged, the force of the missed strike cracking the platform beneath them.

He’s too strong, Ray thought, ducking under another swing and countering with a sharp kick to Rad’s shin. I have to stay on the move. If he lands one good hit, it’s over.

Rad growled in frustration as Ray dodged and countered, each movement calculated and precise. “Stop running!” Rad bellowed, his voice carrying over the roaring crowd. He swung with a massive backhand, but Ray narrowly avoided it, twisting mid-air to evade the strike.

But Rad didn’t stop. With single-minded determination, he charged toward the golden orb. Ray’s eyes widened as he realized Rad’s intent. I can’t let him get that orb! he thought, igniting his thrusters and propelling himself after his opponent.

In a split-second maneuver, Ray slammed into Rad from behind, knocking him off balance and sending both of them tumbling to the ground. Ray scrambled to his feet, panting, but before he could move, a vice-like grip clamped onto his leg.

Rad’s piercing gaze locked onto Ray’s as he tightened his hold, his expression dark and furious. Oh no, Ray thought, panic surging through him. Before he could react, Rad lifted him into the air with ease.

“Get-” Rad shouted, slamming Ray into the platform with a thunderous impact, a small crater forming beneath them.

“Out-” Rad bellowed, lifting Ray again and slamming him down with even more force. The platform shuddered under the blow, and the crowd gasped in shock.

“Of my way!” Rad roared, spinning with incredible speed and hurling Ray across the platform like a ragdoll. Ray’s body skidded across the surface, leaving a trail before coming to a halt near the edge.

The arena fell silent as everyone stared, waiting for any sign of movement. In the stands, Finnrick’s face drained of color as he leaned forward, gripping the railing. “Come on, Ray… Get up!” he shouted desperately.

“Get up, Ray!” Delilah and Torrin joined in, their voices breaking with urgency as they cheered him on.

Rad dusted off his hands and began walking toward the orb, his steps heavy with finality. “You brought this on yourself, Ray,” he muttered under his breath, his hand reaching toward the golden glow.

Ino’s sharp eyes never left the battlefield, their usual calm now replaced with an uncharacteristic intensity. His aged features were set in a grim expression, the lines on his face deepened by the light of the arena. His fingers interlocked tightly, knuckles pale with pressure, as he leaned forward in his seat.

The silent murmurs of the crowd around him seemed distant and irrelevant as his focus honed in on the crumpled figure of Ray lying motionless on the platform. His gaze was penetrating, almost willing Ray to move, to rise. Is this the best you can do, Ray? he mused darkly in his thoughts, his mind a swirl of judgment and expectation.

The slightest twitch In Ray’s battered form caught his attention, his sharp instincts picking up on the faintest sign of life. Ino’s stern expression softened ever so slightly, though his clenched hands remained firm. Prove me wrong.

Ray’s body twitched a second time. Slowly, shakily, he lifted his head, his breath ragged. Inside his suit, his heart pounded like a war drum as he stared down Rad intensely. “They’re counting on me,” he whispered, barely audible, as his trembling hand extended toward Rad. The intense fear of failure flooding his mind like a tidal wave.

And for the second time, Ray had managed to pull it off. A miracle. Rad’s fingers had just barely brushed the orb as his entire body went rigid. He froze mid-step, unable to move even an inch.

Confusion and disbelief flashed across Rad’s face. While Ino’s lips curled into a proud grin as he watched in amazement. telekinesis!? Rad’s thoughts screamed as he suddenly felt himself being dragged backward by an unseen force.

Ray’s glowing emerald eyes burned with determination and emotion, his exosuit glowing faintly as he summoned every ounce of strength he had left. He ignited his suit's thrusters and flew straight at Rad, who stumbled from the unseen force pulling him back. With a burst of speed, Ray closed the distance and delivered a devastating right jab to Rad’s chin.

The Impact sent a shockwave rippling through the air as Rad’s massive frame was lifted off the ground and hurled backward. The crowd erupted into deafening cheers as Rad was sent flying off the edge of the platform, his descent illuminated by the arena’s golden glow.

As Rad fell through the sky, his mind raced. I lost? he thought, shock giving way to a begrudging sense of respect. …He’s stronger than I thought… Ray earned this. With a calm acceptance, Rad closed his eyes, a faint grin tugging at the corner of his lips. Good job, Ray.

Back on the platform, Ray stood panting heavily, his body trembling from the effort. He stared at his outstretched hand before clenching it into a fist, a mix of relief and triumph washing over him.

From the stands, Penelope’s voice rang out. “And there you have it, folks!” she announced, her tone brimming with excitement. “Ray Cooper emerges victorious in this epic showdown!”

Olivia cheered alongside her sister, her radiant smile lighting up the crowd. “What a battle! Let’s hear it for both opponents!” The crowd roared with enthusiasm, their cheers shaking the very foundations of the arena as Ray stood victorious, his name echoing through the stands.
