V01C02 First Step

First Step

— Greetings! The brain wave scan has shown that you are an unregistered user. Do you want to create a new avatar? NOTE: Limited one avatar per user. Simply speak as you normally would to advance

"Yes!" Ryouji answered immediately.

— Select the name of your avatar.

"Khan!" Ryouji had already planned what he would name his avatar. He based it off of one of the greatest conquerors known by almost every person in the face of the earth; Genghis Khan. Sure there were better tacticians than Genghis such as Sun Tzu or Zhuge Laing. Nor was he on par with Khalid ibn Waleed who had never lost a battle. He wasn't as popular as the great rulers like Caesar, Napoleon or Alexander. The reason why Ryouji chose him over the others was because he was more widely know than the first few and more successful than the last few. Khan was successful in his conquest and subjugation of half the known world and Ryouji fully intended to surpass his new namesake.

— Select your gender; Male or Female.

'What? How does neutral work?'

“Male!"

— Welcome to Legend of the Conqueror, Khan! Please choose your race from the following listed. You may not change your race later, except through special in game circumstances.

“Drow!" he said without a moment of hesitation. Drow or more commanly known as 'dark elves', had just recently become available. While he wasn't playing LoC, he had been keeping up with all the news of it. Dark Elves suited his personality and the role he wished to portray perfectly; wise, elegant, and deadly.

As soon as he confirmed his race, a mirror image appeared before him and he saw his hair had turned white as his skinned darkened to an odd shade of light purple mixed with black.

- You may alter your appearance to the confines of your race or leave it as is.

“Lengthen the hair... Longer... Longer.... Perfect! Now randomize face structure, random, random, random, no wait to back to the last one. Hmmm that looks about alright. Raise height to six feet."  When he was done commanding the AI his avatar was now a tall handsome drow with thick white hair reaching all the way down his back. His eyes were still jet bl-

"Wait one more thing! Make eyes red," he ordered. He now had a pair of blood red eyes.

— Select a city and kingdom you wish to start in.

“The City of Mithonia, Principality of Pritopia!”

It was a harbor city, recently discovered on an island ruled by one of the greater kingdoms.

— Your avatar has been created. Remember warrior, your actions shall decide your class, alignment, relationships with those around you, and perhaps even the fate of this world. May fortune be with you.

“Thank you."

A few seconds later the white space around him transformed into a full fledged city. Ryou- no, Khan blinked his eyes as he looked around. This was beyond his expectations. Everything seemed perfectly real from the stone under his feet to the squawks of the seagulls flying over head to the cold sea wind blowing through his hair. He took his first steps and walked over to an isolated portion of the road. There he began to stretch his body, getting a good feel for. It responded just like his regular body and being a few inches taller didn't seem to affect it much. He ignored the laughs and calls of "noob," he received from the other players passing by.

Once he had confirmed control over his body and finished stretching out, he called for his stats window. Instantly a holographic screen appeared before him.

Khan smirked at his racial skills and aimed his hand at some garbage on the floor.

"Globe of Darkness!" The trash disappeared in a sphere of pure darkness. He kicked into the sphere, sending the trash flying, but the globe remained in place causing him to frown. It seemed the skill was stationary, at least for now.

Shrugging it off, Khan walked over to the nearest person who happened to be a user selling his wares behind a stall.

"Hi! I just got here, can you please tell me where the library is?" asked Khan.

The merchant looked at him warily before giving him the directions. Khan immediately took of towards it, not wanting to waste more time. He knew to become an emperor he needed power, and the basis of all power was knowledge. Sure he already researched as much as he could about royal Road from the forums, but most of it was just users speculating. Those who actually had usable information didn't give it away, at least not for free. Therefore the best way to get information was from the library, a place full of books, but where almost no users entered.

He easily found the large domed building and entered it to find shelves extending from floor to ceiling and wall to wall. His jaw dropped as he saw each shelf full of hundreds of books. This was far more than his expectations of a few dozen books. Could they all truly be completely full, or were they just empty pages for show?

"Ahem. Can I help you?" called an old elf, breaking him out if his thoughts. He was scowling at him and looked quite annoyed to have been disturbed from his own reading.

"Ah, yes, I came to read some books."

"Hmph. You certainly found the right place then," snorted the elf.

"Where can I find the books with information on all the monsters and important people on and around this island? Also I'd like some about maritime activity around the place."

The elf looked at him incredulously before pointing towards the far end of the library. "They're somewhere in the back. Go find them yourself, I'm busy. "

Nodding his thanks, Khan walked off to find what he needed. It took him a good half hour since the librarian hadn't even been gracious enough to specify which side they were. He grabbed as many books as his pitiful strength would allow him and carried them over to a table, quickly immersing himself into the words. The light in the library was quite poor so he used [Faerie Fire] on himself to help light it up and increase his skill proficiency at the same time. Soon he lost track of time, becoming so absorbed in the brilliantly crafted books that detailed far more than he could have hoped for. He only stopped when a surprising message popped up.

Intelligence increased by 1 point. (+1 INT)

He was completely shocked. He had read rumors during his research on the game that you can gain stat points for doing certain thing for large amounts of time. Most of these rumors had been shot down immediately, probably by those who knew it was true and wanted to keep it from spreading. So he never came to the library to raise his stats, only to find out all the information he could before he set out on his journey. Now he returned to his books with even greater passion, and an hour later was rewarded by another stat point, this time in wisdom.

Smirking to himself, he took a break to eat some rye bread that every avatar starts with since his stomach was growling. It didn't taste much better than cardboard, but it got the job done and refilled his satiety bar. He spent the rest of the day in the library and was rewarded with his first skill.

Reading [Passive, Beginner Lvl 1: 0%]

Increases reading speed by 2% and makes it easier to comprehend the material read.

He had been planning on taking a break about then, but had to test out the skill. Surprisingly enough it really did increase his reading speed as well as his comprehension, almost as if the AI was feeding the information directly into his brain. He forwent the break and continued reading, only breaking for food and water (luckily there was a fountain in the middle of the library to fill his canteen with). He stayed there so long, the librarian had even forgotten about him and locked him in when the library closed at night, not that Khan noticed.

He spent a total of 72 hours of game time in the library before he finally had to log off for the day. Fortunately the 1% unrealistic gameplay out of the 99% advertised seemed to be his avatar not needing sleep, only food and water. Also fortunate was that time in game was 6 times as fast as in real life. He was smiling brightly as he walked toward the exist after putting back the books, having increased his intelligence and wisdom by a few points each as well as increasing his Reading skill to level 5 and Faerie Fire skill to level 3.

As he walked out of the library, the old elf looked up in surprise.

"Hmm? When did you come back in here?" he asked.

"I never left," replied Khan, confused at the question. He didn't notice the librarians shocked expression as he walked out. He made his way to the harbors to get a good ocean view before he logged off.

Getting out of the capsule, Ryouji stretched his sore muscles. He couldn't believe he just spent 12 hours straight in a video game reading. But this was no regular video game, and he was even planning to spend more time tomorrow before he had to go to work on Monday. He did some quick exercises and ate dinner before going to sleep and dreaming about the adventures to come.

Ryouji woke up early and after doing a quick morning work out consisting of a jog and body weight exercises, he ate a heavy breakfast and jumped straight into the capsule.

Khan logged back in at the harbors where he had logged off. Not wasting any time, he quickly hurried to the library, earning quite a few glances from everyone as he was glowing. It had become a habit to keep his faerie fire on as much as he could to level it up. Once inside the library, he greeted the old elf politely, earning only a snort and scowl in response. He immediately went back to the books and resumed his studies. Any observers might have thought him to be crazy spending all his time in the library while playing a virtual reality game. However Khan was anything but crazy. He'd always been curios and was passionate about learning so it wasn't hard for him to read these books, especially since they consisted of interesting new things about a brand new world. He also wasn't a stranger to spending his days in a library. When he had been run away and hadn't yet joined his gang and even afterwards, the library was the closest thing to home. It was a safe haven and he often sneaked in at night to sleep in peace. It also saved him money as he would only buy books if he knew the library didn't have them.

As such he spent all day in the library again, grinning every time he got a stat increase. Once again he didn't notice the old librarian close down the library and leave. The librarian, however was fully aware of him this time. He purposely didn't say anything to him and closed down the library like normal. Except tonight he walked around to the back, waited for ten minutes and sneaked back in. As if he'd let a sneaky dark elf roam free in his library! The wretch was probably digging around in his personal collection, trying to burn the library down or hatching some other heinous plot. He was utterly surprised when he saw the elf was still reading. He couldn't believe it, and sent the rest of the night hidden and observed him. The elf only stopped when he needed to eat or drink. The old elf had never seen some one so dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge. Smiling to himself, he left Khan to the books.

The next morning he wasn't surprised to see Khan still reading when he opened the library up.

Khan on the other hand was completely unaware of the old elf's approval. He had been even more engrossed in reading after he got a new stat 'concentration' last night. It slightly increased mana regen, and made tasks slightly easier the longer he did them. He was aware of his groaning stomach though. He'd finally ran out of the 10 rye breads he started with and would have to go get more. Unfortunately he only had 10 coppers to start with and a single bread was worth two coppers. He sighed as he would have to put his studies on hold and do some quests to earn his sustenance. As he was walking out of the library to find some suitable quests, he was stopped by the librarian.

"Done studying already?" he asked in a polite tone, completely different than the last few encounters Khan had with him.

"No, but unfortunately I've run out of bread so I have to go find quests for some money and buy it. I'll be back soon."

"Hmmm, speaking of quests, I'm actually in need of a student of knowledge such as yourself. You've proven trustworthy and are far more dedicated than many foreigners I've seen. You see I got into an argument the other day with the Warrior Guild's leader. He dared mock the power of mages and naturally I challenged him to a duel. He accepted on the condition of it being our students who fight it out, knowing that I have no more students. I might've been guild master back in the Mainland, but I've retired now after seeing all those pathetic foreigners come and take our secrets for granted, not even spending the time to actually understand and study them. I need a representative to show them that we pursuers of knowledge are far more powerful than those buffoons. How would you like for the chance at humiliating those pompous stick swingers?"

*Ding*

Warriors or Mages

You've been asked to represent the retired Guild Master in a duel against a student in the Warrior's Guild. The reputation of the mages rests upon your shoulders.

Difficulty: E

Rewards: Increase in Mage reputation in the local area.

Increase in fame and relation among mages.

One skill from the Guild Master.

Requirements: Gain trust of the Guild Master.

Gain admiration for being dedicated in your studies.

Fails if you lose the duel.

Upon Refusal or Failure: Mages reputation shall be lowered if the Guild Master can not find another representative in time for duel or you lose the duel.

Anger Guild Master and no longer allowed access to the library.

Khan was shocked to say the least. He had no idea the librarian used to be a Guild Master, nor how he managed to gain his trust let alone admiration. There was no way he could refuse the quest because the reward was great, but he also couldn't risk getting kicked out of the library. But how was he supposed to win with no fighting skills or equipment?

"I'm honored you would ask me! However I have no combat skills so I can't fight for you," mutter Khan, getting ready to get kicked out of his sanctuary.

"What? No combat skills? Puhahaha, I forget you foreigners appear as weak as a baby. It's a wonder you even survive so long. But this is certainly a problem. I know of no one else who I can ask."

The old elf seemed to be taking it better than Khan had expected. That gave him an idea.

"Um, I may not know any right now, but maybe if you could teach me some spells?"

"Hmm, well I don't have any other option it seems. I'll be a laughing stock if I make an excuse to cancel the duel. However if you lose, I'll make you pay," promised the old elf, a dangerous glint in his eyes making Khan gulp and take a step back.

"I-I won't lose. I will one day become the emperor. There's no way I'll lose!"

"Puhahahaha! Emperor you say? That'll be the day. You youself said you don't even have any combat skills. And yet that determination in your eyes tells me you won't stop until you achieve your lofty ambition. I'll teach you some spells than," declared the old man as he started chanting sinisterly. After a while a dark light emitted out of his hand and shot into Khan.

"D-dark magic?" asked Khan, stunned.

"Well I thought it would be for appropriate for a Dark Elf such as yourself, no?"

"I was hoping for some epic fire spell though," muttered Khan under his breath.

"What was that?"

"Er, nothing! Thank you very much great teacher!"

"That's more like it. Now remember if you lose, I'll make you pay. Here's some silver. Go get yourself some armor and meet my in the Warrior's Guild tomorrow at dawn."

Khan received 25 silver from the old elf. It was already sunset so the morning wasn't too far off. Besides the shops would be closing soon, so he hurried out to go and buy some supplies. Before he left, however, he remembered something.

"Hey, what's your name old elf?"

"Who's old, you little brat! The names Zarliack, and don't you forget it."

Khan's eyes widened and his jaw dropped at the mention of the name. He had read about it just today. Zarliack had indeed been Guild Master of the Mages Guild back in the Mainland. He was also a pioneer in many fields of magic and one of the most powerful warlocks around.

"N-n-nice to meet you! I'm Khan, the man who will become the Emperor!" With that said, Khan left leaving the old elf smiling.

He hurried to the weapons shop before it closed for the night. He asked the shop keeper for a few throwing knives. The librarian might have said to get armor, but there wasn't any good armor for just 25 silver. It would break with one straight hit and barely defend him anyway, so he figured he might as well get something he could actually use. He might not have the throwing skill, but this was virtual reality so he should be able to do the things he could in real life. He had already learned to use knives on the street.

Dull Throwing Knife

Durability 10/10

Atk: 1-3

A poorly made knife by an unskilled blacksmith.

Price: 1 silver

He bought 10 of them along with a belt to store them that also increased his agility and defense by one point each. After buying a hundred loafs of bread as well he still had 5 silver left over. He went back to the harbor so he could test out his spells before the battle.

After asking for directions, Khan arrived at the Warriors Guild just in time. He was led to an open, square area behind the guild where the old elf was already present, looking worried. He cheered up as soon as he saw Khan walk in. There were also many members of the warriors guild surrounding the  square, including two standing in the center. One appeared to be a battle hardened barbarian while the other was his apprentice judging by his newbie equipment.

"Wahahaha! That's the little turd you chose to go up against my prodigy? He'll break in two with one swing," laughed the old vet followed by the rest of the warriors.

"Ha! We shall see about that!" frowned Zarliack as he walked towards Khan and whispered heatedly to him. "Go get him kid. Don't you dare lose."

"No worries, I won't," assured Khan as he walked to the center of the square and faced the two warriors.

"Hphm, either he's an idiot or too brave. You really think you can win unarmed against this?" asked the old vet tapping his students steel armor. Although it wasn't too great, he was covered in armor from head to waist. Only the leggings were made of leather. Judging by the equipment Khan's opponent was at least level 10.

"Of course. If I can't even beat him, then how would I be worthy of becoming an emperor?"

That earned him another round of laughter. "A skinny, flimsy jinx clinger like you be an emperor? Wahahaha! Dream on kid," said the old vet as he shook his head and walked back to the crowd, leaving the two duelists to fight.

"You should just give up, kid. It's nothing personal but there's no way you can beat me," smirked his opponent as he withdrew an axe.

"We'll see," replied Khan, not backing down.

"Tch. Don't say I didn't warn you."

DoomMaster987 has requested for a duel. The first one to hit 5% health loses.  Will you accept?

Khan burst out laughing at the message. "Doommaster987? Seriously? How old are you?"

"Shut up, kid! Just accept the duel before I chop your head off."

Khan barely suppressed his chuckling as he accepted it. DM987 grinned wickedly as he twirled his axe around. "You're done for, you red-eyed freak. I thought that old geezer might actually have brought someone worthwhile so we invested in special armor. Although it's weaker against physical attacks, it has great magical resistance against all the elementals."

Not waiting for a response, he immediately ran at him swinging his axe and shouting "Axe Slash!"

Khan quickly ducked and rolled out of the way. The warrior followed after him, swinging the axe wildly and calling out a few other moves. Even though he was much higher level than Khan, it seemed as if he hadn't added a single stat point into his agility. The heavy armor wore him down even more while Khan had started out with a higher agility do to being an elf and was only wearing the beginners garb which weighed nearly nothing. As such he was easily able to dodge the wild axe swings.

Seeing that he had the advantage in speed, Khan continued dodging for a while to make sure that truly was the extent of his opponents abilities. Confident that the raging axe wielder wasn't being slow on purpose, he ducked an axe swing and called up his Globe of Darkness covering his opponent's face before dodging to his side. As DM987 charged forward to get out of the sudden blindness. He blinked as his head burst out and he didn't see the elf anywhere. He did feel his foot tripping him up as he rushed forward, however, and was sent sprawling on the ground.

Khan didn't waste a moment as he stepped behind the fallen warrior and aimed his hand at his unprotected back.

"Dark Bolt! Dark Bolt! Dark Bolt! Dark Bolt! Dark Bolt!" he shouted as streams of black shot out of his hand and smashed into the warriors back causing him to scream in pain.

Critical Hit!

Critical Hit!

The problem with black magic was that it caused more pain than other magics even if it didn't do as much damage. It even caused pain for Khan as it shot out of his arm. He had already tested it before hand and confirmed it didn't do any actual damage to his hp, just caused pain as a cost for using it and was used to it enough to ignore it. Since he attacked him from behind where the armor was weaker, he also got a critical hit for two out of the five shots.

DM987 screamed in pain and rolled over as quickly as he could. "What the hell was that?" he growled at Khan as he swung his axe causing the elf to jump back.

"That, my friend, is what you call a spell," grinned Khan as he shot another bolt at him only to have the warrior block it with his large axe. He frowned at lowered his hand. He would have to wait for another chance to use the spell as already more than half his mana was gone. Thanks to his studying his mana was at 200 and his regen was also good, but just five bolts brought it down by half. On the other hand the warrior's health had only dropped by about a 10th.

"But my armor was supposed to resist it! Why did that hurt so much?" he roared as he charged at Khan again and again using a powerful but slow move called "Bone Crusher." Khan sighed, figuring that was supposed to be a finisher move used when the opponent was already down since it was so slow. I

"You said all elements, right? What about Dark?" grinned Khan, taunting him while dodging.

"Dark? Damn you! Figures a filthy dark elf like you would use dark magic."

"So I'm guessing you armor doesn't help against it?" Asked Khan as he fired another bolt at his legs after having dodged a swing to the head and rolled to his side.

DM987 ignored the pain and quickly spun around with his axe finally managing to nick Khan as he tried to dodge it. Khan quickly jumped back.  It was hardly a scratch, but it took half of his health with it. The warrior charged forward to not give him a chance to recover and slashed down with his axe.

"Dark Shield!" shouted Khan while jumping further back. The shield met the axe but shattered immediately, evaporating as if it were made of smoke. It did hinder the warrior's sight for a few seconds, giving Khan the opportunity to come up with a plan.

He was going to have to change tactics if he were to win this fight. The opponent had much more health and he didn't have enough mana to bring him down while using  just one offensive spell. So this time he ran towards the warrior. The warrior smirked, thinking he had gone insane and readied his axe to lop his head off. Khan fell backwards just as the axe was swinging and slide under it. He turned around when he was behind the warrior, laying attention to the axe this time and fired a bolt into the same leg as before and jumped away.

DM987 groaned away the pain and spun around to slash him only to find Khan was already a good distance away. "Dammit elf, is running around all you can do?"

"No, how about this?" asked Khan as he took out his throwing knife. Thanks to his continuous use of his faerie fire while studying, it was now lvl 4 and allowed him to use it on objects. He used it in the knife just as he threw it at the axe wielders leg.

DM987 had raised his axe to cover his head thinking that's where Khan would aim for, but was surprised to find the knife stick in his leg. He was even more surprised when the 'fire' immediately engulfed him as well and started screaming and jumping around to put it out.

"You idiot! That's faerie fire, it's not real! Pay attention to the damn elf!" advised his teacher.

He turned back to Khan to see him running at him full speed. Before he could even raise his axe to swing, the elf jumped up high and landed on his shoulders, causing his mouth to open in astonishment.

Khan immediately fire a few bolts into his mouth, scoring critical hits for each one before he was knocked off. He rolled down the warrior's back shooting another bolt into the same leg he had been injuring earlier. That bolt used up the last of his mana so he jumped far back. In the meantime DM987 finally recovered from being shot in the face and was now fuming. He raised his axe once again and charged at the elf, yelling in rage. Khan had an even easier time if dodging now since the warrior was being worn down from swinging his heavy axe and running around in the armor. He was now also limping ever so slightly on the leg Khan had been aiming his attacks on. So he kept dodging the attacks until his mana was recovered. It helped that the warrior had to stop after a few minutes of rampaging as well to get his stamina back up.

After his mana was at the half way point, he repeated his actions of throwing a knife into the warriors legs and then pounding what ever openings where created by the dark bolts. He got hit a few more times earning him an endurance stat (give slight increase in health and defense and preserve stamina over a longer period of time), but luckily there was enough time in between each hit so that his health had recovered enough. After an hour, both of them were breathing heavily and staring at each other. Khan still had a quarter his life and barely any mana, while DM987 only had about 7% left. They both new that there would only be energy for one more pass which would decide the winner. At the same time both made there move. However while DM987 rushed towards Khan, Khan stayed still except for his waving hands which cast several Globe of Darknesses all around him, enough to completely cover him and the surrounding area in darkness. This was his last bet as he couldn't hold it for more than 3 seconds with his current mana. Luckily three seconds were enough as the axe wielder rushed in slashing at the place Khan had been standing. As soon as Khan had cast his spells, he'd slide over to the side. As the darkness evaporated along with his mana, the audience say the dark elf standing beside the warrior with the last throwing knife buried in his neck.

"Noooo! How could I possibly lose to that weakling!" roared DM987. The rest of the warriors in the audience also began booing while the librarian was chuckling his head off.

"This is no laughing matter Zarliack! The elf clearly cheated!" roared the Warrior Guild Master, his face red in rage. "He used knives! This was supposed to be a duel between warriors and mages. Since when do Mages use weapons? I will have the brats head!" He withdrew the large sword on his back and moved to swing it at Khan who stood there helplessly. The Guild Master was much large then his opponent but was far faster than himself. Luckily, the sword stopped a hairs breath away from his face.

A second later Zarliack appeared next to him and moved the sword away with a long staff which he seemingly pulled out of no where.

"First of all, that was never the condition mentioned in the duel. Second of all, he used his weapons were clearly secondary to his magic in the entire duel, using them only as a distraction or to aid his spells. Third, who ever said Mages can't use swords?" said the old elf, smirking wickedly at the last part as his staff slowly turned into a sword.

Khan and the other cadet warriors were looking astonished while the old barbarian seemed to be barely controlling his rage.

"Just get the hell out of my Guild!" He roared before turning around and walking away.

"Pffft. Who even wants to stay in stinky barracks anyway. Come now Khan," ordered the librarian as he led him back to the library.

Once there, the librarian finally burst out laughing full throttle. When he finally contained himself he turned back to Khan.

"Well done my boy! Did you see those warriors faces? Priceless! You exceeded even my expectations! Now I promised you a skill from my arsenal which shall it be?"

Khan pondered over that for a while. Even though he was offered any skill he couldn't just choose any. It would have to be something he could actually learn and use with his limited stats right now, which discounted most major spells.

"Um, how about identification?"

The Mage started laughing again at that. "Of all the things you could ask, was that the best you could come up with?"

"No, but I can't learn large spells right now, let alone use them. That was the only skill I could think of that I can use immediately and would be useful throughout my time here," replied Khan.

"Very well, but instead of teaching I'll give you this skill book. It contains a beefed up version of identify, called examine. That let's you check more than just items, but people as well. Unfortunately your skills are subpar at the moment to learn it."
