Ch 19 Shadows Unleashed: Beneath the Surface

*giggle* "I know, I know. You’re nothing like one of those donkeys. Haha.. That's so silly." *giggle*

Leila covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.

"Turn on Donkey’s vault security system and bring down the provocative news that amplifies the riot. Now."

Ravyn raises her air pistol and points it at her mission target.

"Okay, sure, plum girl. But are you sure you’re going to save those donkeys?

A deep purple hair covering some parts of Ravyn’s ruddy face reminds Leila of a plum.

…Plum girl?...

Ravyn was puzzled, but now she had to focus on her mission to stop the chaos in several parts of Themeise.

"I didn’t help them. The innocent may have been struck in the crossfire by your actions at any moment. This land is full of criminal gangs lurking under the shadow, and if they move, people will suffer."

It sounded like a lie, but Leila obeyed Ravyn’s demand perfectly and began to play her finger on the keyboard.

*clack* *clack* *clack* *clack* …

Before long, the security system of a bank group affiliated with Donkey, the victim at risk of losing hundreds of millions, went back up. The sedition story was also eradicated. Every gang in Themeise, as well as those that came from other cities, started to signal their withdrawal.

"Congratulations, you can find and stop me. But the inhumans from Donkey are coming to take my head anytime soon. Now, what next?"

Leila shrugged and waited for Ravyn’s answer.

"Airburst and another AB trainee are coming. You're in safe hands with us. Your interrogation will take place after we return to the operations center."

The purple-haired girl responded in the hopes of making the captured perpetrator feel safe. But, on the contrary, Leila doesn’t really care about that either. She even teases Ravyn.

"What a boring formality. But that’s not what I asked for. Judging by your curious gaze and the blazing flame of vengeance that overflowed from the depths of your mind.. You must be dying to know about me and Donkey, aren’t you?"

At hearing from Leila, who had only read her like a magazine at first glance, Ravyn was uptight. But she held on to the gun that was pointed at Leila tightly to suppress her feelings. Ravyn’s reaction to the bob hair hacker in a T-shirt smirked.

"No need to be tense. We still have about 2 minutes before the brown-suited trainee arrives and about 3 minutes for Airburst, right? There are only the two of us right now. Which jackass tales would you like to hear, girl?"

A few moments later…

Leila was in a prisoner truck on the way to the police department after the AB interrogation process was completed.

…Did they really let me go like this? Are these Airburst idiots out of their minds? I’m just playing hard to get, but are my pretending skills that good? That's right, they are just a bunch of silly people that give up too easily…

This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.

*stab!*

At that time, a blade wrapped in a green aura emerged from the road behind the prisoner truck out of nowhere, forming a sickle-blade bunker. Police cars followed behind, braking as soon as they saw the sudden obstacle that caused them all to collide with each other.

*crash!* *crash!* *crash!*

That was followed by another giant blade that pierced through the middle of the truck that Leila was sitting on.

*STAB!*

That truck was lifted up. A man with long, messy hair obscuring a ghastly donkey tattoo appeared at the sharp blade tip in front of Leila.

…And now, their silliness is killing me…

Leila comes to the realization that all her efforts were in vain as soon as she sees Fowler.

"I found you, at last, our mischievous hacker cutie.. People like you are hard to deal with, so I don’t want to waste my energy chasing you. Blame yourself in hell for knowing too much!"

A Donkey executive bids farewell to his former member who betrayed his gang briefly and acts swiftly. Fowler’s hand scythe slammed into Leila’s throat.

*crank!*

The pointed end of the sickle stops at the side of the upright cannon in front of Leila.

"The interim municipal officer is here to vaccinate against rabies now.~ The Rabid"

After gripping the underbody of the prisoner truck while carrying his weapon all this time, Idorund eventually placed his pillar cannon down to thwart Fowler’s killing move.

*screech!..*

The Airburst held onto the blocking AB cannon as Fowler thrust his sickle forward, causing an ear-piercing sound.

"Airburst?!"

Leila was surprised, and Fowler was no different.

"I forgot I hadn't asked all of the questions... Aren’t you interested in becoming my Assistant?"

Idorund asked the hacker girl.

######

That night, on the rooftop of the Hand of Devotion building, AB Assistants' workplace…

"She almost got killed right in front of me!"

Idorund was furious at the man standing on the roof of the thumb part of this building. Had he budged into the truck a split second later, Leila would have died in that car.

"I believe you will help her in time."

Jae, in a leather jacket slightly dusted from the rubble, comforts Idorund.

"And I’m right. Plus, you got Fowler, who you’ve been chasing for years. Not to mention that you should also get the ‘Lacerator’ executive if you’re not being soft on her."

"She’s craftier than I imagined. And you’re in no position to say that to me, Fusen."

Idorund replied.

"Hey, if you call me with that estranged name again, I’ll be really angry."

Jae frowned.

"Later on, our branch will be in chaos because of your crazy plan.. Figuring out a way to complete the mission and also get to test Ravyn’s gut, which was your main purpose, who could possibly pull that off if it’s not you?"

Idorund was still in awe after learning that the release of Leila was a part of Jae’s plan.

"You know it, I'm no match for Mr. Charles in these matters... How about the results?"

Jae changes the topic and asks about Ravyn’s performance in the latest Q-level mission.

"Her decisions on the mission were not as emotionally driven as Mr. Charles was concerned." She also solved our flexibility assessment puzzle an hour faster than we expected. It was faster than the time I spent preparing with the wonderful genius, Zen. I can say that she passes all my criteria."

Idorund made a comment before giving off a slightly worried look on his face, and Jae was able to sense it.

"I see, even a promising one like her isn’t enough. Then it is decided. I’ll have to find a day to visit her sometime.. It’s fun talking with you today!"

Thinking of leaving, Jae suddenly said goodbye. A human-sized balloon was now placed on the roof of the thumb part of the building, replacing Jae’s presence.

*pop!*

Shards of glowing yellow balloons scattered around for a moment and then disappeared, as well as the owner of the balloon.

"Thanks for the tiny fireworks!"

Themeise’s Airburst on the rooftop of the building’s pinkie part looks up at the starry night sky.

######

The following day, Ms. Eugene and all the department heads had just finished a conference with the headquarters and were startled by the news. Head Charles and the chief of the financial department have also been scolded about Kanji's taking part in dangerous field operations. And Idorund is being investigated for lax mission practices and putting the mission target in jeopardy. But everything was solved after an official message from the AB headquarters. The content explained that the issue was to create a situation for apprehending executives of Donkey, The Rabid Fowler, and for the recruitment of new intelligence member Leila.

"Double-crossed and captured Fowler of a King (K) level of threat. On top of that, scouting someone to fill the lack of Intel in our branch, all in one fell swoop… Mr. Jae is so cool!"

The branch head who read that message became a happy big girl and canceled everyone’s disciplinary hearing.
