Persistence

After the tiring lunch, Lianfeng returned to the palace, her steps heavy but her expression composed. Ren, ever vigilant, waited for her at the gate. As they fell into step together, the soft fragrance of newly planted peonies filled the courtyard, their vibrant blossoms swaying gently in the spring breeze.

Lianfeng glanced at Ren, her lips curving into a faint smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "You'll never guess the circus I just endured," she began, her tone wry.

Ren raised her eyebrows, and asked, "What happened? Was it a good show?"

Lianfeng chuckled and said, "When I was talking with Shi Meng. I saw Wu Hi at a stall so I ran to avoid her, dragging Shi Meng along. As soon as we caught our breath, we saw Prince Yan. We ran to dodge him but. In the end, I had an awkward lunch with Wu Hi, Shi Meng, and Prince Yan."

Ren calmed herself and spoke, "Quite the ordeal. Did Prince Yan discover your identity?"

Lianfeng sighed and said, "No, but he seemed quite interested. If he pursues this matter, it could only mean trouble. We have to act more vigilantly from now on."

Ren nodded and they continued to walk in silence. The scent of peonies grew fainter as they moved deeper into the palace grounds.

Until Ren spoke, "Then, what about Shi Meng? Is he trustworthy?"

Lianfeng replied," He is. From the way he handled things today, he surely won't cause trouble for me." She paused and continued, "I am thinking of recruiting him in our plan. What do you think?"

Ren thought for a moment and stated, "He has achieved great heights at a young age. He is surely an asset. I don't think there's any disavantage for us."

Lianfeng nodded, she picked up the teacup and blew on it to cool it down. He can be helpful. But will he agree to be a part of my plan?

As soon as the dawn broke, an attendant knocked on Lianfeng's door. Lianfeng still half asleep, rose from her bed with great strength. She donned her robe and opened the door. The attendant was a young man. He wore a red robe, with a leather belt. A jade pendant hung at his waist. He bowed slightly and said, "Prince Yan has called you, Madam. He asks you to accompany him to the mountains."

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

Lianfeng's brows curved and her eye twitched. Why? Why is he calling me? It's better to check it out myself. I can refuse him afterward.

Lianfeng replied, "Please tell Prince Yan to wait. I will meet him after I freshen up."

The attendant took his leave. He took small steps almost like a child's.

Lianfeng shut the door and freshened up. She donned a black robe and strode out. The sun had creaked out of the mountains and shined brightly. Some soldiers patrolled the palace while others were stationed at the gates. The palace was with little activity as it was still early.

Lianfeng was met with Prince Yan and Shi Meng mounted on their horses. There were 2 horses at each of their sides. At some distance, she saw Wu Hi donning a blue robe.

What are you planning?

Prince Yan smiled slyly and spoke, "Well, didn't we have an amusing encounter yesterday? I thought a little ride might help us clear the air, don't you think?"

You sly fox. Lianfeng lied, "I'm afraid I am feeling unwell today under the weather. Perhaps another time, Your Highness."

"Oh", Prince Yan replied. "Ask the Imperial physician to check on her," he ordered his attendant.

Before the attendant could move. Lianfeng replied with a courteous smile, "I have already checked with a doctor. No need to trouble the Imperial physician."

"It's no trouble. After all, it's his duty as a doctor too."

Shi Meng interjected with a smile, "Your Highness won't take a no for an answer. You might as well join us."

Lianfeng complied and mounted the horse and so did Wu Hi.

What game is he playing? And why bring us all here?

Adrenaline coursed through her as the horses thundered across the plains. Dust swirled beneath their hooves, and the sharp wind stung her cheeks. Lianfeng glanced at Prince Yan, who rode just ahead, his posture relaxed yet calculated. His sly smile hadn’t faded, and she could feel his eyes flicking back to her now and then.

Wu Hi rode a few steps back, her thoughts churning. What is Lianfeng hiding? Does Prince Yan suspect something? And what is his role in this mess? She glanced at Shi Meng who was all sweaty.

As the horses galloped faster, the wind lashed against their faces. Prince Yan stole a glance at Lianfeng, while Shi Meng struggled to keep up, sweat glistening on his brow.

Prince Yan finally slowed his horse, turning back to address them with a teasing grin. “I must say, this ride is already far more enjoyable than our awkward little lunch yesterday. Don’t you agree?”

Lianfeng forced a polite smile. “Indeed, Your Highness. It’s... refreshing.”

His chuckle was soft, almost indulgent. “Refreshing, yes. Though I do wonder... what else might be uncovered in such an invigorating setting.
