Day One Orgin <4>

Unknown Number

Hey choom!

You never told me where you lived... so I just paid for a room nearby, whole day, so you can recover from last night.

Also, got my gun back and it’s running better than ever! I’ll get you the gig I promised as soon as possible I swear!!

Though I heard you mumbling about a ‘Full Patch’ and ‘For morning me to cry about’, sooo you might wanna check on that

Just... y’know, clean up a bit before showing your face.

No really. Get to a ripper, that blow was looking baaad.

First impressions can really make or break this for you.

‘urgh... Shit... Where the hell is my Maxdoc.’

Jack woke up, finding himself suffering from the unavoidable migraine that comes from drinking heavily with a head injury.

The pain was slightly alleviated with the success on getting a gig down, even if he had no idea what it was all about .

If this gig works out, he should be able to get a stable source of eddies, but there’s the question of how exactly to present his... ah, ‘skill set’ here. He could go the route of netrunner, though that’s not actual his speciality, so some cracks might show, but it could still work with his current level of code skills and as a cover for the one-of-a-kind program currently lodged in his skull.

One problem would be his actual lack of use as a netrunner, but most other options would require gaining more trust while keeping LAG a secret.

The safest option would be as a beginner merc who got his hands on some good tech, though the lack of other cyberware might be a bit suspicious.

...some thing like a ‘new recruit with an aptitude for stealth’ sounded the best to Jack. There’s hardly ever a reason to throw the newbie into some impossible stealth mission.

He quickly bought a fresh mag for his Kenshin, there’s enough back at his flat for the work but he felt safer with a loaded gun on these streets, and made his way to one somewhat trustworthy ripper.

Old Fuck

As you have passed the age for section 37.9 3rd clause, Rent Protections for Youths in the case of Lost Guardianship, full rent will be immediately enforced by 01/07/70.

‘Haaah... lets hope this whole merc thing works out.’ Jack sighed as he thought to himself, heading down a back alleyway to the rippers shop.

She was a deft hand half of the time, and aggressively sober the rest of it.

More than trusted to pull off any jobs flawlessly, only to forget some of the steps half way through. Any repairs from one of her messes would be done free of course, it just meant extra time had to be scheduled whenever you called in.

He had to wait a minute as there was already someone on top the operating chair, so chose to kill time by looking over that ‘Patch’ Holo had warned him about.

Jack almost closed the program immediately, there wasn’t a single thing he recognised from the night before. Seemingly worked from the ground up, even the variable names had all been switched around, with the code ending a couple thousand lines shorter then where it had started. He must have worked himself into some sort of drunk fever to even make this big a difference in one night, and Jack was starting to think the sudden inspiration for LAG wasn’t so unexplainable after all.

Closing his terminal, simply trusting that he hadn’t recreated the Blackwall AI in a hand iron, Jack stood as the other merc left to see what exactly had gotten knocked loose.

“No major problems, might scar a little. Keep it clean with the usual stuff and the stitching will do the rest.” Serena explained, “There’ll be a bit of itching as your brain adjusts to those optics alright? Don’t touch them though.”

“A very basic pair of Kiroshi lenses, built with Anti-dazzle protection like you asked but...” She seemed a bit conflicted for a moment before settling back into indifference.

“I don’t know why you didn’t just go for the full replacement, like, I don’t think I’ve done a lens cover since my apprenticeship, and you’re really lucky I had a pair, they aren’t sold anywhere any more.”

“Means you can’t sell them off, means I can get something preem for dirt cheap.” Jack replied, sliping back into his jacket. “That or maybe I’m just paranoid over corpo cam eyes.”

“Hmph, just don’t go do something stupid.”

Holo Choom

Gigs in 3 hours!

Head down to the Heywood / Pacifica border, location data: #P80F3#

look for the mean looking pimp in a Samurai jacket, he’s guarding a run down food shop or whatever this place is.

‘Might be a bit late for that.’ He contemplated, paying up almost everything he had, leaving just enough for the metro.

‘Pacifica? Interesting...’

There have been rumours that Arasaka, and other corps though it’s mainly Arasaka, has been trying to expand into Pacifica which has started riots form the inhabitants. With the Unification Wars barely ending and all the corps pulling funds out of the area a lot of problems are popping all over Pacifica.

Pacifica has always been quite independent within Night City, to the point that no one would be surprised if they suddenly declare independence, though it was more likely that the Night City governing bodies declare it’s independent so they can exclude it from funding and other political statistics.

‘Now... I’m looking for a Samurai fan if i remember right, who here looks the meanest?

Ah, there.’

Standing just next to the entrance of a small curry place was a very stereotypical punk, not a Cyberpunk but of the older kind half a decade ago.

This seemed to be where they were meeting, Jack was hoping the didn’t get flatlined for getting too close.

‘I could use LAG but it would be best to keep it’s existence hidden from anyone I don’t trust, or, right now, everyone else.’

They’ll figure it out eventually anyway, but any time bought is more than worth it.

He hoped there was enough free time before the gig starts for real to integrate some of the VI code he scrapped off that smart gun last night into LAG’s system so even without an available terminal it can be improved. There were some reeaal Nova learning networks in that thing.

More realistically Jack just wanted to get a bit of control into the thing, otherwise he could quickly be left out of position and out of options.

Jack walked swiftly to the punk, about to call out.

Cold steal centred against his skull stopped any such thoughts dead.

He desperately hoped he wouldn’t be next.
