The L.A.G Switch <1>

“See you at the firework show!” Hinata giggled out as I stumbled away, “Oh, wait!”

Her laughs followed me as I made my way home.

Of course she would call that out. They both love to remind me how they fuck at the secret view point I used to bring her to. My father showed me that spot weeks before someone Zero’d him, and they know it.

Well fuck them, they want to call me slow? I’ll show them slow when I put bullet between their eyes!!

Oh and they’ll see it coming! That’ll be the worse part!

I just need the stupid program up and running and then they’ll all be fucked!...

Shit! I’m back at square one with this waste of a cyberdeck. ‘Oh, it can hold 5 Quickhacks at once!’ like that helps!! ‘You can queue up two hack at once i-’ wait...

Wait wait wait!

If it can load up two quick hacks into its system to run... yes! That might just work!

I can split the program into multiple pieces to bypass the packet size issues!! sure no one in their right mind would make a custom OS for such a delicate and brain interfacing cyberware but what’s a little risk at this stage, neh? I’ve got people to murder in cold blood! Can’t be wasting time on something as stupid as safety, besides, I doubt I have enough chrome to worry about Cyberpsychosis!

...

I did it...

...

Fuck.

Well... what now...

...

Suppose I should clean up. It has been 24 hours of straight work after all... I’ll grab a bite to eat on the way.

There was a good chance of rain so I grabbed the jacket nearest to me as I left. It was of an older style, dark grey monotones with two thin neon strips down each arm, missing the usual flair found in clothes these days and I was starting to enjoy it.

This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

So the code was done, which opens up the opportunity to completely overturn my entire life in many ways but... well there aren’t any problems that don’t simply require more time to come up with solutions, or better cyberware. There’s also the fact that it is kinda revolutionary in its field but I didn’t claw my way up out of a short life by being and idiot, I already know my technical ability far surpasses most everyone.

Hell I made most of my income for a while fixing up bad code and hacks, and would have continued if anything well paying didn’t require either a degree or jumping head first into solo life and putting my neck out for a choppin’.

Some gonks tend to blame even those who worked on the hacks that flatline their family or gang, and I was not prepared to defend against some borged out leadhead hunting me down daily.

The hack, right, yes, the revolutionary world changing hack. I cycled the different parts through by cyberdeck as I made my way to the firework show. This bad boy is my ticket to revenge, and probably a better future, but most importantly Revenge.

A weird quirk of the quickhack is it has to be used proactively otherwise you lose a lot of its functionality. Hacks to mess with optics already exist, and all optics can display data, so this manipulates said data with a super optimised learning algorithm VI bordering on the beginnings of an AI. Not that a mere cyberdeck could run something like that.

Ah good we’re almost at the special spot I know Hinata is riding her new output at.

I call this masterpiece... the L.A.G switch - Light Augment Ghost... switch... I’ll think of a better name eventually. The program lashed out with a standard untraceable ping at anyone I was in the ‘line of sight’ of, which with the current state of development was basically everyone. My cyberdeck couldn’t handle the crowds but it didn’t need to, as I climbed to my viewing point with unmistakable sounds coming into focus I Whitelisted the optics of two well known ‘chooms’.

I had already traced them for connection, but the program had a protocol to gather such required connections if needed, which it would be against literally anyone else. I was not exaggerating when stating that this hack was revolutionary, from the moment I turned the corner, it hijacked their optical feed. They both seemed rather surprised at my arrival though that didn’t stop theirs.

To achieve the best effect I slowly continued my walk, aiming to circle them slightly as I approached. LAG was already filling in the gaps.

“I FUCKING WARNED YOU!” the half nude gonk screamed, haphazardly drawing his Unity and taking aim as I closed in.

LAG worked its magic and I could feel my cyberdeck heating up as my true position was slowly skewed in both their visions. My hand rested on my own Iron, an Arasaka JKE-X2 Kenshin, cost me quite a lot of eddies and today it gets a real world test drive.

“Well, I hated knowing you, bye bye!” I heard Hinata call out as I got within a few feet of my old chooms barrel.

I watched as his finger tightened on the trigger, putting a bullet right between my eyes... or at least, where LAG was telling him my eyes were currently. The bullet flew with a deafening bang. The shock and confusion on both of their faces was euphoric as, before they could react, I cleanly drew my Kenshin and blew the gonks brains out towards Hinata, coating her in her beloved.

It was soo satisfying.

I halted LAG in what was very much a power move and watched as her eyes refocused on to the real me. Through the immense shock, horror and very obvious panic attack, Hinata still spoke out as I approached her, gun raised and aimed right for that pretty head of hers.

“ah, aaah... I had no part in this! I tried to talk him out of it I swear! You must believe me!!“ she gasped out eventually.

I always loved how resilient she was.

I looked into her cold, mechanical, pleading eyes.

*BANG*
