A day later, at dawn, Zayzal and Sera were coasting down the motorway, heading south in Anders's SUV without him. The two sat there in silence, each having their own thoughts on the matter.
‘It’s for the best…’ Zayzal inwardly shook his head, trying to rationalize his decision. ‘If we had stayed there with him, we might not’ve left for another few weeks to a month. Even that’s at a minimum. On the other hand, we could’ve taken Anders with us, but with everything going on, the last place he needs to be is on the front lines, unable to defend himself. Sera and I can only protect him so much.’
He still felt bad about leaving him there, but this was the most logical decision. They hadn’t known each other for that long either. Anders was a good friend, but…
“Do you think we’ll see him again?” Sera asked with her head leaning against the window.
Zayzal shrugged, “I don’t know.” He said, glancing at her. “If he’s lucky and has time to heal, maybe. If that hospital gets attacked or a dungeon is nearby, then probably not.”
Sera frowned, her instincts telling her to go back and stay there and protect him until he was somewhat healed, but she knew Zayzal wouldn’t do it. If only he’d just-!
‘No,’ She shook her head. ‘I know it’s not Zayzal’s fault. It’s just… this situation sucks.’
The image of a tall, silver-grey-haired mage appeared in her mind, causing her to grit her teeth. ‘If it’s anyone’s fault, it’s that bastard!’
However, thinking about Anders's words yesterday helped her calm down.

“…You’ve done more than enough for me, so I want you to leave without me.” Anders said with a sad smile.
“What?!” Sera lashed out and instantly frowned. She walked up to him and grabbed his collar. “You dumbass! You think we’re just going to leave you in the hands of these cowards?!”
Dr. Ebersbach, who had just appeared next to the door, froze. Zayzal crossed his arms and gave her a look that said, ‘My apologies.’
She just shook her head and waved it off, replying with her eyes, ‘It’s nothing. She’s right.’ Afterward, she closed the door and continued on her way, wanting to give them some space.
Anders chuckled and attempted to shake off her grip, but she wouldn’t budge. Chuckling awkwardly, he responded, “Why not? This place is relatively safe. It’s a large building with all kinds of corridors and hallways, giving me the advantage. They clearly have a generator or something similar running, providing certain areas with electricity. With how well off the people I’ve seen so far are, it’s clear they have food and water. This is also a University of Medicine. I’m sure this place is a hell of a lot better than bouncing around in some car.”
“But-!” Sera exclaimed, but Anders raised his hand and interrupted her.
“I know you and Zayzal are heading to Greece, which, to be honest, sounds fun. But being here, back in my homeland, I almost can’t bring myself to leave. Not with how bad everything is. I was already on the fence about staying before, but you could say this injury forced my hand.” Anders said with a smile.
It wasn’t a smile out of resignation or bitterness but a genuine smile. Sera couldn’t see it as she was still scolding him for being an idiot, but Zayzal could. He knew that Anders didn’t make this decision lightly and that this was what he truly wanted—staying behind and helping his country.
‘I guess it makes sense. I’m doing the same thing, after all.’ Zayzal inwardly nodded as he could understand Anders’ motives. Although he didn’t feel good about leaving him here, what else could he say if that was what Anders wanted?
“Plus, we haven’t known each other for that long. I’m already incredibly grateful for being able to travel with both of you. The fact you two saved me when we were all in danger told me more than enough about your characters. Thus, I refuse to be your burden!” His eyes burned with conviction as he looked at them.

Sera nearly punched the man in the face, but Zayzal made an exaggerated sigh and walked toward the bed. “Have you made up your mind?” He asked.
“I have.” Anders firmly nodded with a smile.
“Alright.” Zayzal returned the smile. “You can keep the Mind’s Eye technique. We’ll make a copy of it to keep, and I’ll spend the next day helping you learn it and maybe even discover the next ‘stage’ with your spear. Sera can go and clear out the area of monsters. We can also check the rest of the university and the people in it to ensure it’s safe.”
“Hahaha!” Anders burst out laughing. He looked at Zayzal as if he was an idiot, but the kind of idiot that was worth befriending. “That’d be much appreciated!”
Then he added, “But there’s no reason to go so far. If the military passes through here, I can guarantee they’ll take me in. I have plenty of old friends, after all. I’ll at least be safe with them until I heal.”
“Just think of it as a goodbye gift,” Zayzal joined in on the laugh and said.
The two guys shook hands, completely understanding each other, while Sera just watched with a blank expression.

Now that Sera thought about it, she probably didn’t have to worry about Anders. The University was safe, Dr. Ebersbach was a good person, as well as the other survivors, and he’d have plenty of supplies until he healed.
After she cleared the area of monsters, it should be relatively safe compared to other places in the country.
‘Still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.’ She grumbled, but there was a faint smile on her face.
Zayzal saw that out of the corner of his eye and smiled as well.

As the SUV roared on the road, the landscape outside shifted, painting a portrait of a world in upheaval. Once bustling with life and culture, Central Europe lay in tatters under the new world. Zayzal and Sera made their way south through the desolation as they put everything behind them.
They passed through ghost towns and ravaged cities, where all that was left were rotting bodies or bloodied homes. Occasionally, they encountered groups of survivors, some scared and seeking help, others aggressive, driven to despair. Each encounter reminded them that although there were places that were surviving, others weren’t so lucky.
In one city, they stumbled upon a band of marauders who had taken control of a small community. The SUV took quite a bit of damage there, but they managed to escape with their lives.
Their journey took a unique turn when they reached the Rhine River. What was once a majestic flow of water was now a dry bed, revealing an unimaginable sight—a massive dungeon entrance, gaping like the maw of some titanic beast.
After a bit of scouting, they delved into the depths. The dungeon was a labyrinth of darkness and danger, inhabited by creatures from Germanic folklore. The battles they fought there were brutal, each victory hard-earned but rewarding. Amidst the dangers, they found resources and weapons that amplified their powers. Through these adventures, their understanding of mana and their own bodies advanced as well.
As they ventured deeper, the challenges grew, but so did their prowess. Zayzal’s spear techniques, combined with his Mind’s Eye, improved his capabilities at an astonishing rate. Sera was right there with him. Rather, she was always a step ahead due to her previous experience and the ease at which she could get stronger.
Together, they cleared section after section of the dungeon, killing as many monsters as they could. In the deepest chamber, they faced a monstrous spider and its babies. Although it wasn’t quite as difficult as the rats from the dungeon with Kaldrik, they still struggled. But, because of their increased strength and synergy, they killed it and collected all the loot, destroying the crystal and ensuring nothing else would spawn from there.
Emerging from the dungeon, they came out even stronger.
Eventually, their path led them to the majestic Alps at the Germany-Austrian border. Here, they were forced to halt. The mountains stood as a barrier. The harsh and unforgiving weather made any attempt to cross a fool's errand.
As they stood at the foot of the towering Alps, the vastness of the challenge before them became clear. This was a world that demanded adaptation, resilience, and strength. It was a world that had no place for the weak or the unprepared.
They set up camp with the mountains as their backdrop and the stars their canopy. The night air was crisp, carrying with it the occasional chirping of birds or grunts of unseen animals.
Sitting by the fire, Zayzal and Sera talked about their experiences over the last week or so.
"We've come a long way, Sera," Zayzal said, staring into the flames. "But it feels like we’re not much closer to Greece ‘cause of these damn mountains."
Sera nodded, her eyes reflecting the fire's light. "Mm. We’ve come full circle, huh? Our adventure started in the mountains, and now we have to cross these… monsters”
She looked up to see a dark silhouette of the mountains in the background, their peaks invisible as they pierced the sky. She’d never seen anything so tall and, honestly, terrifying before. Sera couldn’t imagine crossing something like this, and she grew up in the mountains!
