Chapter 1 - The Reunion

Chapter 1 - The Reunion

"...Another viral video has surfaced on social media, unveiling a body of an unidentified creature washed ashore. This creature, unlike those seen in previous videos, bears a striking resemblance to an oversized wasp, its size comparable to that of a large dog. Once again, scientists have chosen to remain silent regarding these discoveries, sparking a wave of speculation and theories among the public. However, authorities stress the importance of patience, urging citizens to await the forthcoming scientific explanations rather than succumbing to baseless conspiracy theories..." The room was enveloped in the steady cadence of the news anchor's voice.

The soft beep of her alarm clock pulled Kira from the depths of sleep. Her eyes fluttered open to the gentle light filtering through the curtains. With a contented sigh, she stretched her arms above her head, feeling the warmth of the morning sun against her skin.

“Today’s the day,” she murmured, a smile tugging at her lips. She sat up, the anticipation of Vicky’s visit filling her with excitement.

Throwing back the covers, Kira swung her legs over the side of the bed and hopped to her feet. The plush carpet welcomed her bare feet as she made her way to the bathroom. She reached out and turned off the TV, silencing the news report of a mysterious creature washed ashore.

“Not today,” she said to herself. “No bad news today.”

The familiar routine of brushing her teeth and splashing cold water on her face woke her up fully. The refreshing sensation invigorated her senses. With a determined spirit, Kira moved to the treadmill in her apartment’s small gym. The gentle whirring of the treadmill filled the room as she pushed herself, determined to keep her body healthy and strong.

“Just ten minutes,” she muttered, starting her workout. “Enough to get the blood flowing.”

After a satisfying run, Kira made her way back to the bathroom for a shower. The soothing water cascaded down her body. She closed her eyes, letting the warmth envelop her.

“Ahh, perfect,” she sighed, feeling the water trace rivulets down her toned physique, washing away the remnants of sleep. With each drop, the fatigue of the night slipped away, replaced by a renewed sense of vigor and vitality.

With a towel wrapped around her, Kira moved to her vanity, where an array of makeup awaited her. She picked up her favorite foundation, applying it with expert precision.

“Gotta look my best today,” she murmured to herself, smiling at the thought.

She dressed in her favorite casual outfit—a pair of snug black jeans, a vibrant tank top adorned with playful graphics, and a sleek black leather jacket. She felt ready to take on the day.

Grabbing her keys and phone, she made her way to the door, the excitement bubbling inside her. With a final glance around her cozy apartment, Kira stepped out into the crisp morning air. The sun was shining brightly overhead, promising a beautiful day ahead.

Settling into her car, she couldn’t help but feel a surge of happiness as she started the engine. “Today’s going to be amazing,” she said to herself, a grin spreading across her face.

The bustling airport greeted Kira with its usual whirl of activity as she made her way through the bustling crowds towards the arrival gate. Excitement bubbled within her chest, anticipation building with each step she took.

Reaching the large Flight Information display, Kira eagerly scanned the screen for any updates on Vicky's flight. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw the details—Vicky's plane was due to arrive in two hours.

"Two hours?" Kira muttered, her brow furrowing in confusion. "But it should have landed by now. What's going on?"

She tapped her phone, checking for any notifications or updates, but there was nothing new. The flight status still showed the same information—delayed arrival.

Frustration mingled with concern as Kira paced back and forth in front of the display. The bustling airport around her seemed oblivious to her growing unease. She glanced at the departure board, trying to distract herself with the comings and goings of other flights.

"Maybe there's a technical issue or something," Kira reasoned aloud, trying to ease her worry.

With a shrug, Kira decided to make the most of the extra time she had. A familiar aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the air, drawing her towards a cozy café nestled in a corner of the bustling airport. Stepping inside, she was greeted by the warm embrace of the café's inviting atmosphere.

As she made her way further into the café, Kira found herself drawn towards a large TV screen mounted on the wall. The screen flickered to life, displaying the urgent news bulletin that had captured the attention of everyone present.

"Multiple reports from various organizations have just come in, detailing frequent subtle movements on the Earth's crust," the news anchor's voice echoed through the café, drawing the focus of the patrons. "These movements have led to a series of small earthquakes, some suggesting a rapid expansion of the Earth is taking place."

The air in the café seemed to shift, a ripple of unease spreading among the customers as they exchanged worried glances. The news was unsettling, the implications unclear and ominous.

"However," the news anchor's voice persisted through the tense atmosphere of the café, "Scientists have dismissed these claims, stating that is not how it works and if the earth was expanding, it would lead to catastrophic events like no others. Yet, others have not ruled out the possibility, citing the recent series of earthquakes as cause for concern…”

Kira's gaze remained fixed on the screen, her brow furrowed in deep contemplation. The words echoed in her mind, grappling with the implications. Could it be true? Was the world truly changing in ways they couldn't comprehend?

Around her, the café hummed with a blend of skepticism and apprehension. Patrons leaned in closer to their companions, voices pitched with uncertainty and curiosity.

"I mean, earthquakes like these don't just happen for no reason," a man's voice chimed in from a nearby table, his tone laced with unease. "There has to be something behind it."

"But an expanding Earth? That sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie," another person interjected, their skepticism clear.

Kira glanced around, absorbing the varied reactions. Some faces bore expressions of concern, while others seemed more dismissive. The uncertainty hung thick in the air, mingling with the aroma of coffee and the soft murmur of conversation.

"I don't know what to believe," a woman whispered to her companion, her voice tinged with worry. "But it's hard to ignore all these reports.”

Taking a deep breath, Kira approached the counter and ordered a coffee, her hands slightly trembling. The barista flashed her a sympathetic smile, sensing the tension in the air.

"Strange times we're living in, huh?" the barista remarked softly as she prepared Kira's drink.

"Yeah," Kira replied with a faint smile, her thoughts still preoccupied. "Strange indeed."

She took her coffee and found a secluded corner of the café, away from the prying eyes and hushed conversations. Sipping the warm brew, she mulled over the implications of the news report. There was more to this than met the eye, she was sure of it.

Sipping her steaming cup of coffee, Kira allowed herself to relax, the rich flavor enveloping her senses. She took in the sights and sounds of the bustling airport, the excitement of travelers coming and going, each with their own stories and destinations.

Lost in her thoughts, Kira found herself reminiscing about the countless adventures she and Vicky had shared over the years. From spontaneous road trips to late-night conversations filled with laughter, their bond was unbreakable.

With a soft sigh of contentment, Kira leaned back in her seat at the cozy café, the warm glow of her phone illuminating her face as she scrolled through the endless stream of funny videos on the internet. Glancing at her watch, Kira realized that time had flown by in the cozy café. With a contented sigh, she finished the last sip of her latte and gathered her belongings, ready to head back to the arrival gate.

With each passing moment, the anticipation grew stronger, until finally, the arrival gate came into view. Kira's heart skipped a beat as she scanned the bustling crowd, her eyes eagerly searching for a familiar face amidst the sea of travelers.

Amidst the flow of people, Kira's eyes locked onto a figure emerging through the gate. There she was—Vicky, her best friend, her radiant smile brightening the entire airport. Her attire was effortlessly chic, wearing palazzo pants that swayed with each step, paired elegantly with a trendy white halter top. Her golden blonde hair cascaded down in waves, framing her face like a halo, and her striking blue eyes sparkled with joy.

"Vicky! It's really you!" Kira exclaimed, her voice carrying over the airport buzz as she hurried towards her friend.

"Kira!" Vicky replied, her own excitement evident as she opened her arms wide.

They embraced tightly, laughter bubbling up between them, the years apart melting away in that single moment.

"You look amazing!" Kira exclaimed, pulling back slightly to take in Vicky's chic attire and infectious grin.

"Likewise! It's so good to see you," Vicky replied, her blue eyes sparkling with joy.

"I can't believe you're here. It's been too long," Kira said, stepping back to look at Vicky with a mixture of disbelief and happiness.

"Tell me about it. And look at you, still rocking that fierce look," Vicky teased, nudging Kira playfully.

"Just trying to keep up," Kira laughed, her eyes crinkling at the corners.

"How's retirement treating you?" Vicky asked, her tone turning more serious as they began to walk towards the exit.

"Busy, but I'm adjusting. It's nice to finally have some downtime," Kira admitted, a hint of nostalgia in her voice.

"I bet. Well, now that you're a free woman, we have plenty of catching up to do. How about we grab a drink and you fill me in on everything?" Vicky suggested, a mischievous glint in her eye.

"You read my mind. Lead the way," Kira said with a grin, falling into step beside her best friend as they headed out of the bustling airport, ready to embark on their long-awaited reunion.

The airport echoed with their laughter and chatter, the years apart melting away in an instant. For Kira, this moment was pure magic—a reunion filled with joy and love.

As they cruised through the bustling streets of ZeroCity in Kira's sleek convertible, the city's vibrant energy surrounded them. People rushed past in a blur of motion, while colorful billboards and neon signs lit up the skyline.

"Did you catch the news lately?" Kira asked, her eyes darting between the road and Vicky.

"Yeah, it's been pretty crazy. What do you make of all those reports?" Vicky replied, her voice tinged with curiosity.

Kira shrugged nonchalantly, her grip tightening on the steering wheel. "Honestly? I've learned not to take everything at face value. There's always some new rumor or sensational story floating around."

"But you were in the military, Kira. Don't they keep you updated on these things?" Vicky pressed, leaning forward in her seat.

Kira chuckled, a hint of mischief in her tone. "You'd think so, right? But sometimes even I'm left in the dark. Guess they figure I've had enough of the serious stuff."

Vicky nodded thoughtfully, her gaze wandering out the window. "Well, whatever it is, it's got people talking. I just hope it's not something we should be worried about."

"Agreed. Let's not dwell on it now. We've got a lunch date to enjoy," Kira said, flashing Vicky a reassuring smile.

"Sounds perfect," Vicky replied, returning the smile as they continued their journey through the city. Their conversation shifted to lighter topics, filled with laughter and reminiscing about old memories, their bond growing stronger with each passing moment.

The peaceful drive came to an abrupt halt as the car shuddered violently. Kira's heart skipped a beat as the ground beneath them seemed to lurch and sway, the unmistakable rumble of an earthquake reverberating through the air.

"Oh my god, hold on!" Kira shouted, gripping the steering wheel tightly as the car rocked dangerously.

The bridge they were on trembled and groaned, the once steady structure now a chaotic mess of movement. Alarms blared from nearby cars, adding to the cacophony of chaos that filled the air.

With a sickening lurch, the bridge lurched to one side, sending cars skidding and sliding dangerously close to the edge. Panic swept through the air like a wildfire, and Kira could hear the terrified screams of the people around them.

"What do we do?!" Vicky cried, her voice filled with fear seeing there was no way out due the traffic ahead.

"We need to get out of the car, now!" Kira yelled, her heart pounding in her chest.

With quick and decisive movements, Kira unbuckled her seatbelt and flung open the car door. The ground was still shaking violently beneath them, but she gritted her teeth and stepped out onto the trembling bridge.

"Come on, we have to move!" Kira shouted, reaching out a hand to her friend.

Vicky nodded, her face pale with fear, and scrambled out of the car. The ground beneath their feet seemed to lurch and sway with each step, the bridge creaking and groaning ominously.

"Follow me, stay close!" Kira yelled, her voice barely audible over the chaos around them.

Together, they navigated through the maze of cars, dodging falling debris and swaying lampposts. The air was thick with dust and panic, the once sturdy bridge now a precarious and unstable path.

Suddenly, a loud crack echoed through the air, and Kira felt a surge of terror grip her heart. A section of the bridge ahead of them seemed to buckle and collapse, sending cars tumbling into the abyss below.

"Hurry up!" Kira shouted, her heart pounding in her chest.

With a burst of adrenaline-fueled energy, they sprinted towards the nearest police officer, who was frantically directing the evacuation efforts toward the emergency bunker. The ground still trembled beneath their feet as they raced away from the collapsing bridge, but the sudden shout from the police officer made Kira's blood run cold.

"Look out!" the officer yelled, his voice filled with terror.

Kira whipped around, her heart pounding in her chest, and her eyes widened in horror at the sight before her. Three massive lizards, each the size of a semi-truck, emerged from the water below the bridge.

Their scales gleamed in the sunlight, their razor-sharp teeth glinting menacingly as they devoured everything in their path. The screams of the people caught in their jaws echoed through the air, sending shivers down Kira's spine.

"Oh my god, oh my god!," Vicky yelled, her eyes wide with disbelief.

With a surge of terror-fueled adrenaline, Kira grabbed Vicky's hand and they sprinted with all of their might. The ground seemed to shake even harder beneath them, each step a frantic race against time.

"WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?!" Kira shouted, her voice filled with fear and confusion.

There was no time for answers as they ran, the terrifying screech of the monstrous lizards echoing in their ears. The city streets were a blur of chaos and destruction, people screaming and running in all directions.
