Military Terms And Ranks

Military Terms And Ranks

There are mainly two kinds of soldiers. A professional soldier named Praxis, and a militia named Anarceton.

A Praxis was a civilian who undergo strict training from battle school for around a year. Each soldier was educated with general knowledge, chivalry, basic strategy, geography, cartography, martial arts, swordsmanship/archery/spearman(it depends on individual choice or instructor advice), etc. The result was a well-disciplined army, well organized, highly skilled, knowledgeable, loyal, strong, and humane. They are very well equipped and swear an oath only to the king or nobles who are approved by the king. A battle school is a place where people from every social class could attend. But it’s not free either. For regulars, the students have to pay around 1 gold coin for the whole semester. And it has a fee to take the entrance exam for 1 silver coin per student. In the entrance exam, the candidate is tested with basic skills like reading and writing, basic calculation, physical prowess, and endurance test. They would be rated, and the top 10 candidates would have a full scholarship and be free to pay for the whole semester. On the contrary, the candidates who failed the test, wouldn’t be able to attend school. But the failed candidate could try to take the entrance exam in another semester. This system is applied to every people, regarding their social status.

But it’s also worth noting, even if the candidate manages to enter the battle school, there’s no guarantee they would graduate from battle school. Some students would be expelled if they failed to keep up with their studies and training. The margin difference between the dropout and the graduated is variant, sometimes it has more graduates than drops out, but sometimes it’s otherwise.

A battle school exists in some major cities. For example, the city of Magna Viridis had one battle school. And also, there’s a maximum age limitation for candidates. An individual who passed 25 years old couldn’t take an entrance exam anymore. And minimum age for becoming a candidate is 15 years old.

In a battle school, the student didn’t train to become a cavalryman. To become a cavalryman, you must continue training in a Proxios Academy. A trained cavalry is named Proxios. To become a Proxios, you have to pay quite a lot of gold coins which is 7 gold coins. The entrance exam is also didn’t free. It takes 1 gold coin just to take the entrance exam. In addition, every candidate of the academy must be a graduate of the battle school. And again, the same as the battle school, even if you manage to enroll in the academy, it didn’t guarantee you would graduate. Becoming a Proxios is enough to gain prestige.

A hundred selected Proxios are chosen to become Sortens. Sortens are the elites who are tasked as a bodyguard for Enilus and as special squads who take direct command from Enilus itself. These Sortens are selected not just from their abilities, but also from their personality. Sortens are chosen on their capability to adapt to any kind of situation, sense of leadership, and loyalty. In some cases, Enilus could choose their own Sortens, but it needs permission from the king or noble who’s in charge. But mostly, Sortens are chosen since they graduated from Proxios academy and regular Proxios who got promoted or were chosen by Enilus. A hundred Sortens led by Soresfin. Soresfin should be the one who held the responsibility for Enilus safety.

The Praxis and Proxios also paid very well. The Praxis would be paid around 20 gold coins per campaign when war broke out. And if they died in the battle, the family would receive a compensation of around 15 to 20 gold coins, depending on how much the Praxis contributed during the campaign. If there’s no war, they would still be paid per month. They would be paid around 3 to 5 gold coins, depending on how well they behave. While Proxios would be paid around 40 gold coins per campaign and 6 gold coins per month. If the Proxios died during the battle, their families would receive compensation. The compensation sometimes is not in form of gold, but a precious memento made with diamonds. While for the elites one, the Sortens, would receive the same amount as the other Proxios, but they should have an additional payment from Enilus and the House of the noble he served in. And after serving for 25 years, Praxis and Proxios are allowed to retire and would be given a large sum of gold and given a special set of armor and weapons for himself.

To add some description, 1 gold coin are equal to 10 silver coins. 1 silver coin is equal to 100 copper coins. Normally, having a fancy meal three times a day would cost 30 copper coins. A simple food would only cost half of it. Praxis is a valuable battle force, so the King only allowed the royal family and some noble Houses to have Praxis as their army.

On the other hand, Anarceton is a civilian which had combat ability but didn’t attend a battle school. They mostly consist of hunters, retired Praxis, or even some dropout battle school students. Sometimes, they do have a cavalry too. It’s hard to measure their ability since they are mostly unorganized. The training, recruitment process, equipment, and salary are completely under the control of the local noble house’s policy. Some of the nobles add a huge sum of financial support for their Anarceton, and some didn’t. Mostly they were tasked as a guard and private army under the local noble house. So their loyalty should be lies on local nobles, not the King. But even so, some noble houses didn’t have an Anarceton at all.

An organized Praxis is grouped into 4 different groups.

First, 8 Praxis would make a single group named Homados. Each Homados shared the same tent. The leader in Homados is titled Atropos. An Atropos didn’t have a second-in-command but could be replaced by one of the Praxis in Homados if the Atropos died or were forced to retreat if he was severely wounded when the battle ensued.

Second, 10 Homados created a group of Daemones. It means each Daemones consists of 80 Praxis. Each Daemones had a trumpeter called Alala and a banner carrier. The leader of Daemones is called Astina. The Astina also have a second-in-command called Astara.

Third, 6 Daemones created a group of Belgrate. It means each Belgrate had around 480 Praxis. The leader of Belgrate is called Assilator. In Belgrate, is starting to have a more complex chain of command. The highest commander in one Belgrate is Assilator. An Assilator has a second-in-command named Astina Primus. On a normal occasion, a Belgrate made a formation of 3 daemones in the back, 2 daemones in the center, and 2 daemones in the front. 3areaemones in the back is free to act, as long as their role as support didn’t break. The 2 Daemones in the center is led by Astina Postea. An Astina Postea is chosen between the two Astina from each Daemones. An Astina who was chosen as Astina Postea would give the entire command of his own Daemones to his Astara. And then, in the front row, there are 2 Daemones. The 2 Daemones in the front were led by Astina Inges, who was also chosen from the 2 Astina from the 2 Daemones in the front.

An Assilator is one who received instruction from the highest command, Enilus, directly. Then, he/she would immediately navigate, coordinating with other Belgrate, and chose the defensive/offensive move. An Astina Primus is mainly in charge of the whole formation. It has to be exactly as the order from Assilator. An Astina Primus had the authority to command every row in Belgrate as much as Assilator. In ideal order, an Astina Primus is a bridge between the Assilator and the Astinas. Astina Inges is the one who leads the front row. They were tasked to maintain the front row as long as possible. Astina Inges would have to make sure the Praxis didn’t get overwhelmed if the battle prolong for a long time. So he is the one who had the authority to substitute the most advanced Praxis with the Praxis in the back row. The Astina Postea, on the other hand, is the one who makes sure the front row had enough Praxis. If he saw the frontline starting to lose a Praxis, he should order a Praxis from his row to fill the front.

In addition, every Belgrate has 2 or 3 doctors and dozen of a medical assistants

Fourth and last, is Delmos. It consists of 10 Belgrate and 200 or more Proxios(Horsemen). In one Delmos, the combatants are around 5000 strong. If it counted with the supply and medical teams, there could be around 6000 people. The leader of Delmos is called Enilus. The chain of command in Delmos isn’t as complex as in Belgrate. The highest command in Delmos is Enilus, and his second-in-command is Assilator Primus.

On normal occasions, one Delmos consists of 4 Belgrate in the back row, 4 Belgrate in the center row, and 2 Belgrate in the front row. In addition, the front row has 2 small groups of Proxios in the right and left flank. Each of the small groups of Proxios consists of 100 Proxios. The whole formation of Delmos was arranged by Enilus, but the front row is commanded by Assilator Primus when the battle engaged. That also meant the Proxios and its leader, Palioxis is under command of Assilator Primus.

And if the whole army consists of more than 1 Delmos, then the leader is Enilus Primus whose chosen from one of the Delmos.
