Beginnings

The bell rang. Octavious sighed and gathered his things. He was normally the last one out of his classroom, and today was no different. It was difficult for him to maintain his straight A grades since his mother was single and worked all the time.

"Octavious, thank you for helping out again today," Ms. Shaneda, Octavious' calculus teacher said as she let down her long blond hair. "It's so great that you help everyone understand the difficult problems."

"Aww it was nothing Ms. Shaneda", Octavious replied shucking his shoes while scratching his dense ball of frizzy black hair. "I'll see you later, I have to go to the soup kitchen! Even though I know it makes finding time to study difficult, I can't sleep knowing there are people who need help out there."

Ms. Shaneda watched him go and whispered to herself "He tries so hard."

Octavious had to go to the bad part of town to get to the soup kitchen. It was 5 miles and he had to walk since his mother wasn't able to buy him a car. Octavous could have worked to save for a car, but helping people was more important to him.

As he walked along the broken sidewalk past dried weeds, he was stopped by a large white man with a shaved head. The man wore a leather jacket and had tattoos on his face.

"We don't like your type in our town", the man said menacingly.

"I'm sorry sir, I just want to help people" Octavious said.

"Help yourself, to my fist!" the man yelled and punched Octavious in the stomach.

Octavious stumbled and turned to run, but realized he had been surrounded by the man's friends. They proceeded to beat him about the head and neck with rocks and chains. The last thing he saw before everything went black was the swastika tattood on one of the hoodlum's neck.

He mumbled "please god forgive these racist whites, they only hate us because they're losers with nothing else to live for".

And out there, somebody important heard Octavious' prayer.
