Let's Make a Game of It

Let's Make a Game of It

Amen wakes up.

Light surrounds him. So bright it hurts him.

Code and numbers surround him, lifting him.

"What is that?"

His voice sounds weird and distorted, but he doesn't know it.

"Who are you?! Osiris?"

Amen kicks and punches, but the light keeps going over him.

Fire and water and light and oceans and history and numbers all keep grabbing at him.

He closes his eyes and shakes.

"It feels like being born, right?"

The voice was in a perfect Egyptian dialect, comforting Amen briefly.

"I don't remember being born."

"Open your eyes."

"I don't want to."

"The worst is over."

Amen does.

His small hiding spot is back to normal, but still glowing.

A glowing JAR sits before him.

"What is that?"

"Break it."

"No."

"Now."

Amen doesn't want to argue with the voice.

He slowly walks up to the jar and kicks it over.

The jar explodes into light.

Amen closes his eyes again.

But his eyelids don't hide what is going on.

Levels and heart rate and points and strength are like a filter over his brain.

Eyes close and shut. Still there.

It all goes faint.

"What is this?"

"Are you the best thief in Egypt?"

"Who are you?! Did Pharaoh send you?!"

"Answer me."

"Yes. Yes, I am."

"We will see."

"Who is we?"

"We. Every tomb you raid, everything you steal, everything you chase, let's put a number on it, shall we? Let's make a game of it."

"Why?"

"Because legends are made that way. You want to be King of the Thieves? Just do what you were doing."

The jar goes away and the room goes back to normal.

The levels and heart rate and points are still there, but even more faint.

Amen throws up, then goes back to sleep.

1110 BCE.

Torches flick in the deep darkness.

Priests and priestesses and armed guards and religious processionals move down the long, horrifying corridors of the tomb.

It is a solemn and dire procession.

Fresh engravings and hieroglyphics of history pop on the walls as the torches pass them.

The kings and gods and warriors and Pharaoh’s cover the walls.

This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.

The procession moans and sings a horrible song.

They come before the open sarcophagus, with the mummy exposed.

A beautiful, DEATH MASK covers its face.

The HIGH PRIEST pulls a long scroll out.

The ritual begins as he speaks the BOOK OF THE DEAD.

Littered around the room are piles of riches and gold, and things to keep one busy in the afterlife.

Golden spears lean against a wall.

Underneath them lays an exquisite SWORD and SHEATH.

It is gold with pictures engraved around it.

The High Priest continues speaking.

One member of the processional starts to move out of order as the High Priest is chanting.

This figure looks at the SWORD.

The High Priest continues the rites.

The masked figure moves closer, moving their body with every verb and annunciation of speech.

The High Priest stops and turns.

The figure stops and nods at the Priest, then gives them a thumbs up. GOOD JOB!

The High Priest shakes their head, annoyed. He continues.

Guards and priests start preparing to seal the door behind them, and all of the treasure FOREVER.

They are prepping.

Grunting, pulling a wall into a forever position.

Once the last is out, the door will be placed. The masked figure then jumps across the room. They grab the sword, knocking the spears over. Gasps!

The spears scrape against the wall, then slam against some priceless jars full of goodies.

They shatter.

Our thief chuckles, and looks at everyone.

Whoops.

Guards and priests run at him.

Amen jumps across the room.

All of the details over his eyes are flashing. Heart rate up. Stealth down. Now, element of surprise DELETED.

Text flashes about more guards coming his way. No exit.

"Good thing I'm used to this now."

He slams his feet into the open coffin, falling into the mummy with a CRUNCH!!!!

YUCK.

He then leaps out of the sarcophagus, chunks of bones and mummified debris with him, as the entire coffin falls over and the body and mask fall out.

Our hero then pushes out of the way of everyone and begins running down the tunnels.

Goodwill and tact and respect of the dead points start falling before Amen's eyes.

"Yeah. Yeah. Yeah."

AMEN tears the mask off as he runs and smiles.

Good looking and strong and full of life, unlike this tomb.

A little older looking than when we first met him, and when every step and move was added up.

Guards leap and try to tackle him in the narrow corridor. Radar shows their heart rate and broken bones and weaknesses.

"Best upgrade yet."

Amen jumps and leaps, kicking a few guards in the face, as he bounces from side of the walls to the other, in an ancient parkour like dance. Style points.

The guards tackle each other into walls, collapsing into precious tombs, and wiping out priceless history. Warnings flash about being unruly and honor system dropping fill every free space in his sight.

"I'm a thief. What do you want?"

Smoke and debris fall, as parts of the ceiling collapse from all of the tackling and running into walls.

Amen keeps running, torches lighting the corridor. One guard is blocking the way.

Amen leaps, and bounces off the walls, then runs on the CEILING, going over the guard, and then back to his sprint on the ground.

All points and levels go back immediately to where he was, and start to sky rocket even higher.

The High Priest is at the other end of the hall.

"STOP HIM!" He screams.

A BIG BURLY guard now runs at him.

Amen grabs a torch on the wall and swings it. He slams it into the guard’s face with a SMACK.

"Okay. I swung that a lot harder than I meant to."

The guard is now completely on fire, trying to tackle Amen.

Points deducted, but added. Horrible thing to do. Looked pretty cool doing it.

Amen jumps off the walls again, and can see the exit ahead of him.

Amen explodes from the tomb entrance, out into the beautiful night air of the Egyptian desert, full of STARS, in the middle of the VALLEY OF THE KINGS.

People around other tombs and entrances scream and yell.

Amen sees a camel waiting by and runs and leaps on to the beautiful creature, and rides off into the night.

The jingle that means his mission is over plays in his ears and brain.

"Never going to get used to that dumb thing."

Amen smiles though. He secretly likes it, as he watches all the points being added up across his eyelids.
