Chapter 4: Cleaning House

The first rays of dawn had yet to touch the sky as Lumi slipped out of her room at the Adventurer's Guild. The air was crisp and cool, carrying with it the scent of wet earth. She glanced back at Haki, still fast asleep in their comfortable quarters, and silently vowed to keep him safe.

Making sure nobody followed her, Lumi made her way toward the edge of the town, her footsteps muffled by the damp grass. The forest loomed before her, its ancient trees standing tall and proud. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for the task ahead.

As she ventured into the dense foliage, she became one with the shadows, her presence hidden from prying eyes. Her senses heightened, she listened for any signs of movement, her ears attuned to the subtlest of sounds. The forest seemed to hold its breath, as if aware of her purpose.

Time seemed to blur as Lumi weaved through the undergrowth, her movements fluid and silent. She navigated the forest with practiced ease, her senses guiding her toward her ultimate destination. After what felt like an eternity, she caught a glimpse of flickering firelight through the dense foliage.

Her heart quickened in anticipation as she drew closer to the source of the light. The bandit camp came into view, a crude collection of tents and makeshift shelters. The air was thick with the scent of smoke and unwashed bodies, a stark contrast to the fresh scent of the forest.

Lumi crouched behind a cluster of bushes, her gaze fixed on the camp. She studied the bandits, their rough appearances and callous demeanor made her feel dirty. They were a motley crew, united by their shared desire for plunder.

She watched their interactions, their laughter, and crude jokes echoing through the trees. They seemed oblivious to the dangers that lurked just beyond their camp, their arrogance shielding them from any impending threat. There wasn’t even a single patrol in place, not even a scout surveying the area in case of an ambush.

With a steady breath, Lumi focused her attention on their leader, a burly man twice her size with a scar marring his face. He exuded an air of authority, his every command met with unquestioning obedience. She knew that if she could take him down, the rest would follow.

As Lumi studied their movements and assessed their defenses, a plan began to form in her mind. She would strike under the cover of darkness, using her ice magic to freeze their weapons and immobilize them. It would be a swift and calculated assault, leaving them no time to react. She didn’t want to slaughter them, she wouldn’t be able to collect the bounty otherwise.

But as she prepared to make her move, a sense of unease washed over her. She couldn't shake the feeling that there was another presence in the forest. Her instincts screamed at her to retreat, to reconsider her first plan. Perhaps there really was a scout patrolling the forest at the end.

Lumi hesitated for a moment, torn between her desire to exact justice and the need to ensure her own safety. She knew that her actions could have dire consequences. With a heavy heart, she made the difficult decision to retreat, for now, to find out what that unknown presence was better attacking.

Lumi retreated from the bandit camp. The thin hairs in her feline tail stood to attention as her senses heightened alert for any signs of danger. She felt a presence, a lingering weight in the air that sent a chill down her cat tail. Her instincts told her to investigate further, to uncover the source of this unknown presence.

Following the scent of grime and blood, Lumi quietly maneuvered through the dense foliage, her footsteps barely making a sound. Her heart raced in anticipation as she stumbled upon a hidden cave, partially concealed by overgrown vines and moss-covered rocks. Three bandits stood watch nearby, unaware of her presence.

With calculated precision, Lumi swiftly incapacitated the three bandits by twisting their necks, her movements fluid and precise. The bandits crumpled to the ground, two of them unconscious, however, the third died in her arms as she released him.

As she entered the cave, Lumi's eyes widened in horror at the sight before her. The cave had been transformed into a storage for the bandits' ill-gotten gains, but it also served as an improvised prison. Her heart sank as she saw a dozen hostages, their bruised and battered bodies evidence of the cruelty they had endured.

Among the captives, Lumi's gaze fell upon a family, their features mirroring her own Inehmo race. Her breath caught in her throat as she recognized the pain and despair in their eyes. The wounds they bore and the malnourished state they were in tore at her heart.

Suppressing her emotions, Lumi broke the lock of the door and approached the family, her voice gentle yet firm. "I will return to free you," she assured them. She offered them a few stamina potions, hoping to provide them with some relief until she could come back for them.

The family's eyes widened in gratitude, their hope flickering to life once more. They clung to the sliver of hope that Lumi had given them, trusting in her promise to return. Lumi felt an ache in her chest, a mix of sadness and anger at the injustice they had suffered.

“Stay here,” she ordered all the hostages. The six humans were breathing heavily, but they still looked at her with relieved eyes. There were two male dwarves and a dark elf woman seemed in better shape.

“We can help,” a dwarf said.

“You barely have any strength. Wait for me here,” she shook her head.

Leaving the captives behind, Lumi made her way back to the entrance, her blood boiling with rage. The weight of the situation bore down on her, threatening to consume her composure. But she remained steadfast, her expression unchanged. Lumi knew that her emotions could cloud her judgment, and so she pushed them aside. Her mind raced with plans of retribution, the bandits' actions fueling her resolve. She would not rest until they paid for their crimes. Until justice was served. At the end of the day, she only needed the leader and his lieutenant alive.

With each step, her anger transformed into a burning fire, propelling her forward. In the depths of her soul, a storm raged. She would face the bandits head-on. No obstacle would stand in her way.

With a primal roar that echoed through the forest, Lumi charged into the bandit camp like a force of nature. Her movements were swift and precise, like a cat pouncing upon its prey. She struck with the lethal grace of an apex predator, her sword cutting through the air with a whistle.

The bandits, caught off guard by her sudden assault, cried out in fear and desperation. They swung their weapons in a futile attempt to defend themselves, but Lumi danced through their strikes as if she were a ballerina, avoiding their attacks with ease.

Her frostfire magic was unleashed, but she controlled it with practiced restraint, extinguishing flames before they could spread and consume the forest. Instead, she channeled her power into her sword, imbuing it with an icy edge that froze her enemies in their tracks.

One by one, the bandits fell beneath her blade, their screams of agony drowned out by the chaos of battle. Lumi's movements were a blur of calculated strikes and evasive maneuvers.

As the last bandit crumpled to the ground, Lumi's attention turned to the two figures who stood before her, the bandit leader and his lieutenant. Their eyes locked, a silent challenge passing between them. The air crackled with anticipation as they prepared for the final clash.

The bandit leader lunged forward, his sword gleaming in the faint light of the receding moon. Lumi met his strike with a swift parry. Their blades clashed with a resounding clang, the sound reverberating through the silent forest.

Their fight was a mesmerizing display of skill and technique, each movement calculated and deliberate. Lumi's agility allowed her to dodge and weave through her opponent's attacks, her body moving with the grace of a dancer. She countered with lightning-fast strikes, her sword finding its mark with unerring accuracy.

The bandit leader was strong and formidable, his attacks fueled by rage and desperation. But Lumi remained focused, her mind clear and her movements fluid. She was a storm, her blade a whirlwind of death.

Their swords clashed and clashed again, the sound of steel ringing through the air. Sweat dripped down Lumi's brow, her muscles burning with exertion. Her senses heightened, she anticipated her opponent's every move, countering with a precision that bordered on the supernatural.

As the fight wore on, Lumi could see the fatigue in her opponent's eyes. She pressed her advantage, her strikes growing more fierce and relentless. With a final, devastating blow, she disarmed the bandit leader, sending his sword clattering to the ground.

Breathing heavily, Lumi stood victorious. The bandit leader's lieutenant, recognizing the futility of resistance, dropped his weapon and fell to his knees. Lumi's gaze bore into him. And before the two men could even notice it. She knocked them unconscious.
