Chapter 1 - Kane and Garoth

"What to do, what to do" I exclaimed inwardly to myself.

I glanced at the book I held in my hands. A dark brownish cover, silver stripes lined up to form a circular portrait of a majestic dragon. Red eyes, a long neck, covered in black slimy scales. Two wings that covered the sky vast blue clear sky.

"Boring" I jerked my hand. The book flew away, crashing into the wall with a loud bang, "Isn't there anything I can do?"

"My Lord!" A loyal servant rushed through the doors, "The outskirts of the South Forest is under attack!"

"Who?" I began to speculate. The Elves? The Old ones?

"The humans, my king" The servant replied, "They attacked the north camp.

"Humans?" I said in disbelief. It was barely more than 300 years ago since the gods created them. I even remember when they tried to lavish me with gifts, praying for me to protect them. How did they become so strong?

"You can leave," The servant bowed and left the room at my command.

I created a pair garments, a black colored west with white sleeves, and a pair of black trousers. It was a useful technique that I Master thought me when I was a young boy.

I began to chant a simple teleport. Space before me distorted as I vanished from the spot only to materialize in South Forest.

My feet landed on the soft soil. I could feel the chilly temperature lingering in the air.

When the soldiers saw me, they bowed. I glanced around. The sight of the dull, lifeless woods. The old, almost parch-looking trees. The long crooked branches padded with leaves that gave the sun ray virtually no opportunity to illuminate.

"Where's the humans?" I asked the commander.

"This way, my Lord." replied the man with courtesy. Most of the people didn't know about me. I am the guardian of my people. My task, since the moment I was born, has been to defend my people from ancient organizations and powerful beings.

But the latest years have been hard on me. No war. No conflicts.

I cracked open a fake smile as Garoth greeted me. He is one of my war-comrade and is also one of the six clan leaders.

"Situation?" I asked Garoth.

"Kane, how wonderful to see you again, I hope time hasn't taken to much of toll on you?" replied Garoth with a smile.

"Of course not, the last 100 years have been one of the greatest periods in my life," I said sarcastic without even blinking.

This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

"Ahem," Garoth cleared his throat and asked, "I presume you're here for the Humans?"

"Yes," I answered.

"This way then, " said Garoth as he led me into a large building. We enter a narrow room. There, on the floor, stood three humans with shackles around their ankles and bound hands. One of them was a woman. She had golden blond hair and blue eyes.

The other two were men. One of them had short brown hair while the other one had long black hair, assimilated into a ponytail.

"Can you explain what happened?" I observed the humans before saying," Can you explain the situation?

"Well, a group of twenty humans attacked the Gruht Village. Luckily, the elite warriors easily subdued them. These were the only survivors of the group." Garoth began to explain before his nose wrinkled in disgust, "They were still able to kill 13 civilians."

"Have they been interrogated?" I replied.

"Yes, this was just a random att--," said Garoth before I interrupted him.

I lifted up my index finger and murmured a spell, "Wither!"

The humans suddenly began to scream as their bodies began to shrivel up. A few seconds later, mummified corpses fell to the ground with a soft thud.

"Incarnate!" I chanted once again a spell. Invisible flames coiled out from my hand like snakes and enveloped the corpses. Gray ash was the only thing remaining.

"You could have warned me before, Kane. " said a surprised Garoth, "I see your still the same old merciless Lord."

"Yeah, I'll return to my quarters now, " I replied, ready to teleport away.

"Just wait a second, " Garoth said with a crooked smile, "I have talked with the clan leaders, and they to have noticed your, well, attitude.

"Hm? What are they going to do now?" I asked myself.

"So, we decided that you need to to take a vacation, go see the world or something, " Garoth explained.

"What?" I uncousinly replied.

"Yes, there's no war going on at the moment, so it's okay," said Garoth, "But come in a couple of years"

"I suppose I have been rather bored, "I thought to myself, "But Master said--"

"Are you still thinking about what your master said?" Garoth interrupted me.

I nodded.

"Those times were filled with war, it was only custom that The Lord stayed in the country the whole time." replied Garoth, "This for your own good."
