Prologue

"Just give me a code!" I demanded for what I assumed to be the fourth time, or was it the fifth? “The settings don’t matter as long as we actually get to play something. Lunch break is almost over and we still got nothing to do!”

“No, they’re not good enough. Just hold on for two seconds and I’ll find us a lobby.” He continued on his search for the perfect game with his ideal settings. His hopes were high and he wore a determined face, one that was shattered in a matter of seconds. “Oh my god they have voting time set to 15 seconds.”

“You know what fuck it! I’m gonna start eating my lunch. It’s Taco-Tuesday and I ain’t gonna let this banana-flavored milk go to waste.” The regretful expression he wore wasn’t going to stop me this time, I was gonna go through with it. My grandparents could eat without using any electronics so how hard could it possibly be?

"ITGXQQ." Jamal blurted before I could take my first bite. “You know we really don’t have the time to make our server and wait for it to fill up, but I guess it’s better than nothing.”

“Tsk tsk Jamal. Now imagine if you’d done that from the start. All that time wasted, when we could have been playing a game right now.”

“Shut up.” He set aside his phone, pulling in his lunch tray. “Stop with the hindsight and join the server.”

"It ain't hindsight my friend, I tried to tell you but you went all 'Jamal' on me and ignored everything I said."

"Just shut up and join the server." Ah yes, someone was now in a foul mood. Served him right for wasting my time.

I joined the server and began running in circles around the crates. I never knew why I had to do it, I just did it. Just a pair of idiots running around in circles and munching down on some good, mediocre tacos. The same two idiots that were sitting in the cafeteria and wasting precious time, one that could have been better spent at home. Sometimes I just wonder what's wrong with the people in this world. A pandemic is upon us and instead of having online classes like every other school, my school decides that it would be in the best interest of its students to open back up. Unbelievable.

“Uhh Kevin, you sure that there’s such a thing as banana-flavored milk?” Jamal asked as he suspiciously eyed his carton of milk. “Because this doesn’t taste like bananas.”

“What do you mean it doesn’t taste like bananas? It says on the carton that it’s banana-flavored.” I took my first sip and oh my god was he right, it tasted nothing like bananas. I took another one just to double check, this shit was bitter! Why was it bitter?! Did it expire? How unlucky did we have to be to get our hands on the only two banana-flavored milk, one that everyone else that came before us ignored, only for it to be expired?

“We need to return these and complain. Can you believe it? They had the audacity to serve this shit to their students. What do you think about that?” There was no response. “Jamal?” Still no response. He just laid still on the table face-first on his tray.

“Dude, are you okay?” I reached my arms out towards him in the hopes that nudging him would get some kind of reaction. My arms fell flat on the table long before I could reach him, that was soon followed by my upper body lying on the table. I couldn’t move and everything was going dark.

They just had to open the school for god knows what reason. I swear when I make it out of this, I’m gonna file a lawsuit against this fucking school.
