Chapter 1 Practical Demonstration

Chapter 1 Practical Demonstration

Research Installation M1

Isla Matanceros/ 200 miles off the coast of Costa Rica

"Practical demonstration one is ready to begin." A man at the control station said.

I stood facing the arena. 'Today I Amelia Kirk show these ungrateful pigs how much they need me.' No one else had succeeded in the Cybernetics project before her. If not for her, they'd still be wasting time and money on a pipe dream. The arena was in the urban configuration today. The layout was modeled after your typical small-town USA. At one end were two units of the finest Green Berets. Too bad they were going to die today. Sitting behind me were General Mathis and Silas. Silas had been a firm supporter of my research for years, While Mathis had been trying to shut me down. He viewed my research as a waste of time. That only man would ever be good enough for the US army. Her creations were inferior to his soldiers. The Green Berets in the arena had done nothing to me, but I couldn't help the thrill of satisfaction that they would die proving Mathis not only wrong but incompetent.

I pressed the intercom button. "Begin demonstration."

Alarms blared, signaling the beginning of the demonstration. It was simple. The soldier had to make it to the other side of the arena. Alive.

The two teams of Green Berets moved forward in unison. They moved quickly, scanning the area as they went. Wouldn't do them any good, though. I flipped a switch and typed out a series of commands. A set of cage doors at the other end of the arena opened and a dozen dark figures sped out through the gates. They were twice as fast as the soldiers and made no sound as they went. One figure leaped high and landed on the roof of one of the mock buildings. A flash of light flashed and one of the Green Berets went down, the others taking cover and searching for the shooter.

"What the fuck was that?" Mathis roared.

Smirking, I brought up an image of the figure on the roof. The Tall, lean form of a Velociraptor appeared on the screen. On its upper torso was a mechanical harness with a sniper rifle attached to a mechanical arm. The Cybernetics program failed in the past because they couldn't get the animals to treat the machine parts of their bodies as extensions of themselves.

That's to some genetic alterations. I changed that. Twelve Neo Raptors. Two snipers, four assault units, and six rifle units. The mechanical arms would move the guns about and fire just like an extra hand and gun. The Raptors' intelligence allowed them to be trained. Nural inhibitors let us stay in control of them. Curbing their rebellious nature. With the push of another button, the screens lit up so Mathis could watch his men die.

The assault Raptors moved quickly and fired with deadly precision. Three other Green Berets lost their heads before they could fire. The Rifle Raptors laid down, suppressing fire, driving the Green Berets into an alley where the assault Raptors picked them off from the rooftops above. One Green Beret tried to escape to make a run for it but one of the assault Raptors pounded on him, ripping out his throat before attacking his face, viciously eviscerating the man in seconds.

Still smirking, I turned and held up both my arms to encompass the screens behind me. "The future gentlemen. Humans are a weak species. Our only redeeming quality is our intelligence. Raptors have intelligence and really natural weapons. Thanks to our Cybernetics, their deadliness is now ten fold."

Mathis's face was so red it was nearly purple. "You killed my men!" He roared, standing to his feet.

I smiled serenely at him. "Of course, that was the point of the demonstration. You were informed as to the nature of this demonstration. Oh!" I laughed. "You thought your men would live and my creations would die!" I cackled. "Guess you were wrong."

Silas stood and placed himself between me and the General. "General Mathis. Your men died serving their country and with this successful demonstration, no American citizens ever need to die again."

Mathis took a menacing step forward when two armed soldiers flanked him, rifles trained. Silas smiled and placed a hand on his shoulder. "General, I suggest you return to Washington with what dignity you have. Otherwise, I'll have to report a most egregious accident you suffered on your flight from our facility."

Mathis was still fuming, but he silently let himself be escorted from the room. I smiled smugly at the bastard. Silas turned and gave me a reproachful frown.

"Don't antagonize General Mathis," Silas warned.

I scoffed. "Please. I've put up with enough of his shit. My babies have proven that all his grumbling about how useless my work is was utter bullshit. He won't have a job for much longer, especially when I make sure his superiors ask why my babies weren't made available sooner. I'll have extreme satisfaction informing them how he stonewalled my efforts."

Silas shook his head. "Careful Amelia. Mathis is an asshole, but he can still make trouble for you."

I wasn't concerned and told him as much. "Two Green Beret units killed in minutes by my babies. Whatever trouble he might make will roll off my back when the military sees the power that will be at their disposal. It's a new age, Silas. Mathis is old and washed up. He's part of the old order. My new order will change the face of this planet forever."

Silas stared at the monitors where my babies were feeding on the corpses of the Green Berets. I let them indulge themselves since they did such a good job. These were the best of my babies. I had 50 in total and they were all ready to go. Everything was ready. With one word, my babies would hunt and kill every enemy America had. I'd go down in history as the woman who brought about a golden age of cybernetic and genetic genius. My Raptors were just the start.
