026 Chapter Nine: C. Family Reunion Banquet

After shedding tears at the temple, Xuanzang informed his master of the situation and then took his leave, heading directly for Hongzhou.

Upon arriving at the Ten Thousand Flowers Inn, he inquired of the owner, Liu Xiao Er: "Is the mother of a Mr. Chen, who once stayed here before going to Jiangzhou, doing well these days?"

"She did stay with us. But later, she lost her sight and hasn't paid rent for about three or four years. Nowadays, she lives in a dilapidated hut near the South Gate, begging on the streets to get by. The gentleman you mentioned left a long time ago, and we've had no news since. We don't know what happened." Liu Xiao Er replied.

Immediately, Xuanzang went to the rundown hut near the South Gate. There, he found an old woman and greeted her.

"Your voice sounds just like my son Chen Guangrui." The old woman remarked.

"I am not Chen Guangrui; I am his son. Miss Wen Jiao is my mother."

"Why haven't your parents come?" The old woman asked.

"My father was killed by a bandit, and my mother was taken as a wife by the same bandit," Xuanzang explained.

"How did you know to come find me?" The old woman asked.

"It was my mother who told me to seek you out. She mentioned a letter and a sandalwood pendant."

The old woman received the letter and the sandalwood pendant and burst into tears, saying, "My son pursued his dreams and ended up here. I thought he had forgotten his family and morals, but little did I know he was schemed against and killed. Thankfully, the heavens have shown mercy, preserving my son's legacy, and today his grandson has come to find me."

"How did your eyesight become so impaired, Grandma?",

"I spent days yearning for your father, hoping for his return. When he never came back, I cried so much that both my eyes became blurry."

Xuanzang knelt down and prayed to the heavens. "Today, at the age of eighteen, Xuanzang is unable to avenge his parents' grievances. Following his mother's command, he has come to find his grandmother. If the heavens take pity on this humble disciple's sincere heart, please restore my grandmother's sight."

After finishing the prayer, he used his tongue to lick his grandmother's eyes. In a short while, her eyes regained their sight as if nothing had happened before.

The grandmother looked at the young monk and exclaimed, "You truly are my grandson, bearing an uncanny resemblance to my son Guangrui." Overwhelmed with both joy and sorrow, she embraced Xuanzang.

Taking his grandmother by the hand, Xuanzang left the temple and arrived at Liu Xiao Er's inn. He rented a room for his grandmother to live in. Then, he handed over some money to her, saying, "I will only be away for about a month on this journey, and then I'll be back."

Without delay, Xuanzang bid farewell to his grandmother and made his way to the capital city. He found himself at the residence of Minister Yin on the Eastern Street of Chang'an. Speaking to the gatekeeper, he said, "I am a relative and have come to visit Minister Yin."

The gatekeeper informed the minister, who responded, "I have no monk as a relative."

However, Lady Yin Senior disagreed. "I dreamt last night that my daughter Mantangjiao returned home. Could it be that my son-in-law has sent a letter?"

The minister instructed them to bring the young monk into the hall.

Upon seeing the minister and Lady Yin, the young monk knelt and bowed to the ground. From his robes, he produced a letter and handed it to the minister.

As the minister opened and read the letter, tears streamed down his face.

Lady Yin inquired, "Minister, what has happened?"

The minister replied, "This monk is our grandson. Our son-in-law, Chen Guangrui, was schemed against and killed by bandits. Our daughter, Mantangjiao, was forcefully taken as a wife by the bandits."

Upon hearing this, Lady Yin Senior also burst into tears.

The minister declared, "Wife, do not distress yourself. I will report this to the Emperor and personally lead the troops to avenge our son-in-law."

The next day, Minister Yin attended the royal court and presented a report to Emperor Tang, saying, "Today, there is a situation involving my son-in-law, Chen Guangrui, the top scholar. He was leading his family to Jiangzhou for an official assignment when he was killed by Liu Hong from the Hong River. Liu Hong took his wife by force and impersonated my son-in-law, serving as an official for many years. This is an unusual incident, and I implore Your Majesty to send troops to eliminate the bandits."

Upon hearing this report, Emperor Tang became furious and immediately dispatched sixty thousand Imperial Guards. He appointed Minister Yin to lead the troops.

Following the royal decree, Minister Yin left the court and proceeded to the training grounds to assemble the soldiers. From there, he set out on the journey to Jiangzhou.

Traveling by day and lodging by night, as the stars set and birds took flight, they arrived at Jiangzhou in no time.

Minister Yin and his troops camped on the northern bank. Urgently, he dispatched a special messenger to summon the local officials, the Magistrate, and the Prefect of Jiangzhou. He informed them of the situation and requested their assistance, planning to cross the river together.

Before dawn, they had already surrounded Liu Hong's residence.

Liu Hong was still in a dream when the sound of cannons and drums filled the air. The soldiers stormed into the private office, catching Liu Hong off guard. He was captured swiftly. Following Minister Yin's orders, Liu Hong and his accomplices were bound and taken to the execution ground.

The remaining troops camped outside the city.

Minister Yin entered the magistrate's office and took a seat in the main hall. He requested the young lady to come out and meet him.

The young Lady Yin hesitated, feeling embarrassed to face her father. She even contemplated taking her own life.

Upon learning of this, Xuanzang hurriedly intervened to rescue her. He knelt before his mother and implored, "We've come here under Grandfather's command to avenge Father's death. The villains have been captured today. Why would Mother seek death instead? If Mother were to die, how could I go on?"

Minister Yin also stepped forward to console her.

"I've heard that a woman remains faithful to one man. Since the bandits killed my beloved husband, how can I lower myself to be with them? It's only because I bore his child that I've endured this shame and survived in secret. Now that our child has grown and I see my father raising an army for vengeance, how can a daughter face her father with any dignity? I have no choice but to die to honor my husband."

"This is not a matter of you compromising your integrity in times of prosperity; it was a matter of necessity. There's no shame in it." Minister Yin said, and father and daughter embraced each other, shedding tears.

Xuanzang was overcome with sorrow as well and joined them.

Minister Yin wiped his tears and said, "Both of you, don't worry for now. I've already captured the enemy. I will go and deal with the situation."

They headed directly to the execution ground.

Simultaneously, the Magistrate of Jiangzhou had sent soldiers to capture the river bandit Li Biao, who was brought in.

Minister Yin was overjoyed and ordered the soldiers to take Liu Hong and Li Biao into custody. Each of them received a severe beating of a hundred cane strikes. Once they were forced to confess, the details of the conspiracy leading to Chen Guangrui's wrongful death were revealed.

First, they crucified Li Biao on a wooden donkey and paraded him to the market office. After obtaining a confession, they executed him by dismemberment and displayed his head as a warning.

Liu Hong was brought to the spot where he had killed Chen Guangrui in the past.

Minister Yin, along with the young lady and Xuanzang, went to the riverside. They offered a solemn tribute, then ritually removed Liu Hong's heart and liver to honor Guangrui. They conducted a ceremonial burning of offerings, and spoken words of reverence filled the air.

The three of them looked at the river and wept in sorrow.

Their lamentations had already caught the attention of the Dragon Palace, where a sea patrol yaksha presented the memorial tablet to the Dragon King.

After reading it, the Dragon King sent his turtle marshal to invite Guangrui, saying, "Sir, congratulations, congratulations. Your wife, son, and father-in-law are all by the river, offering tributes in your honor. I shall now send you back to life. Here is a Wishing Pearl, two Running-Disc Pearls, ten strands of fine silk, and a belt adorned with precious pearls. With these, you can reunite with your family today."

Guangrui expressed his gratitude repeatedly.

The Dragon King then instructed the Yaksha to transport Guangrui's lifeless body to the mouth of the river for revival.

The Yaksha carried out the command and departed.

Now it happened that the young Lady Yin was about to throw herself into the water in despair, mourning her husband.

At the last second, Xuanzang grabbed hold of his mother in her frantic state to stop her.

Just then, out of the blue, a corpse floated up to the water's surface and drifted near the riverbank.

Lady Yin hurried forward to look and recognized it as her husband's lifeless body. She burst into loud sobs of grief.

A crowd had gathered to watch, and they all witnessed Guangrui's body gradually moving, his limbs stretching out. Suddenly, he sat up. The onlookers were utterly astonished.

Guangrui opened his eyes and saw Lady Yin, along with his father-in-law, Yin Chengxiang, and the young monk, all weeping by his side. "Why are you all here?"

Lady Yin said, "You were killed by bandits. Later I gave birth to this child. Luckily, Venerable Faming of Gold Mountain Monastery raised him. When he found me, and we reunited, I instructed him to seek out his maternal grandfather. Upon learning of this, my father reported to the imperial court, led the troops here, captured the bandits, and just a moment ago, we performed a ritual to offer the heart and liver of the villain to the heavens. I wonder how you managed to come back to life?"

Guangrui replied, "It's all thanks to the golden carp we bought and released at the Thousand Flowers Inn when we were there. Little did we know that carp was the Dragon King of this place. When the bandits pushed me into the water, he saved me. Just now, he granted me rebirth and bestowed treasures upon me, all of which I have with me. Moreover, I didn't expect you to give birth to this son and that my father-in-law would avenge me. It's a turning of misfortune into blessings, an immense joy!"

When learning the news, all the officials came to offer their congratulations. The minister ordered arrangements for a banquet to express gratitude to the subordinate officials.

The next day, the troops began their journey back.

Upon arriving at the Thousand Flowers Inn, the minister ordered the camp to be set up. Guangrui and Xuanzang went to Liu's Inn to find the grandmother.

That night, the grandmother had dreamed of withered trees blossoming and joyful magpies chattering behind the house. "Could it be my grandson coming?" Before she could finish the thought, she saw Guangrui and his son outside the shop.

The young monk pointed and said, "Isn't this our grandmother?"

Upon seeing his elderly mother, Guangrui immediately knelt in reverence.

Mother and son embraced and wept bitterly, recounting the recent events. After settling their debts with the shopkeeper, they set off to the capital. Upon their return to the mansion, Guangrui, Miss Yin, his grandmother, and Xuanzang all paid their respects to the lady of the house.

Overwhelmed with joy, the Lady instructed the servants to prepare a grand feast in celebration.

The minister suggested naming the occasion the "Family Reunion Banquet."

Truly, it was a heartwarming gathering for the whole family.

The next morning at the royal court, the Tang Emperor held court. Prime Minister Yin stepped forward and presented a detailed report on recent events, also recommending the talents of Guangrui for significant roles.

The Emperor approved the report and immediately appointed Chen E as a scholar-official, entrusting him with state affairs.

Eventually, young Lady Yin faced her fate with composure.

After Xuanzang personally visited the Gold Mountain Temple to express his gratitude to Venerable Faming, he pursued meditation. For this pursuit, he went to the Hongfu Temple for spiritual practice.

Who knows what happened later? Let's listen to the next chapter for the details.
