Thoughts/emphasis/important ideas italicized
“Dialogue” “Dialogue that is italicized but w/ quotation marks are still spoken words”
[Speaker] [Speaker in thought w/ italics]-Only doing this if you really can’t figure out the
order of people speaking.
(Notes! And Extra Enlightenment)
I tend to not name characters even if they get many lines of dialogue until some time after
like Sarah, though the girl just runs out after. names go to people with a fraction of
importance in the story, even if they only appear in one chapter, like everyone in this chapter
regardless because I do not like to refer someone repeatedly as [Guy 1] or [Elizabeth Mary Anne Wellington the 21st’s friend] unless they are just unimportant except for giving one/two lines, usually reactions or short statements, probably long statements if the time ever comes up. Just a warning, this chapter does not describe the idea for the entire story, meaning the rest isn't in a zombie apocalypse setting. I am considering on making a story all about zombies, but for a later time.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
(A/N There is no concept of zombies or undead beings in this world plus there is a chance that there are multiple mistakes so ;D)
A silver-haired adolescent flung the thick wooden door open. Wearing a fully black, academy
uniform with gold plated buttons and a chest pocket over his heart. He carried his schoolbag
in his left hand and walked past the groups of socializing students and wooden desks to a
person with a book over his face leaning back on his seat sleeping. The person had the same
uniform as he had on and was accompanied with brown hair. With gleaming blue eyes, the
silver-haired adolescent grew impatient waiting for the person to wake from his slumber and
slammed his schoolbag onto the wooden desk.
[???] “Aurora! Quit sleeping all the time!”
Abruptly, the one named Aurora fell back off his seat and slammed onto the ground.
Immediately, the silver-haired adolescent gasped.
[???] “Are you alright?”
The person, Aurora, rubbed the back of his head, checking for any possible blood.
[Aurora] “I am fine, thanks for asking Caleb.”
He extended his right hand to Aurora. He gladly accepts the offer and was raised up from the
floor by Caleb.
[Caleb] “Why are you sleeping all the time in class anyways Aurora?”
[Aurora] “Firstly, there really isn’t much for me to learn. I basically know every subject that
can be handed to me if anyone were to hand me any textbooks”, he gladly responds.
As Aurora sat back into his seat, Caleb crossed his arms.
[Caleb] “I’m surprised that you aren’t in a university with all of that knowledge! You can ace
anything! Well—anything academic of course, that perfect row of A’s has been tarnished the B
grade given in physical education. Still, you shouldn’t be that tired. What are you doing
during the night anyways?”
[Aurora] “I was just carrying out one of my experiments.”
[Caleb] “Really? When you were younger, one of your experiments almost burned down your
house. You were lucky that the fire you caused was extinguished quickly by your mother—”
He stopped there.
[Caleb] “Oh, I’m sorry.”
[Aurora] “No, it’s fine Caleb. My mother has passed away a long time ago.”
Aurora opened up his book as Caleb scratched his silver hair.
[Caleb] “Sure, but I was still insensitive. I also heard that your father came down with heart
problems last week as well right? How’s he doing?”
[Aurora] “My father’s condition is really critical as of now. The doctors said his heart is giving
out.”
Caleb stood in silence.
[Caleb] “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have asked.”
[Aurora] “Just as I said, it’s alright Caleb.”
Aurora, with dark violet eyes skimmed over the pages of his book.
[Caleb] “Aurora, have you seen the news about the assaults?”
He closed his book and looked at Caleb once more.
[Aurora] “Yes, yes I have, why do you ask Caleb?”
[Caleb] “Well, it’s quite freaky isn’t it? The reports are more frequent right now plus I heard
that the hospitals are full. The academy should be safe since it is on the city outskirt right?”
he followed up with his previous question.
[Aurora] “Caleb, hate to inform you but there is a ‘transportation system’ that connects the
outskirts to the downtown district. About anyone or anything can get here through bus
or monorail.”
[Caleb] “Can’t you just me relax a bit?”
[Aurora] “No, you have to remain ready for anything at all times.”
Caleb couldn’t help but notice that Aurora’s hand was slightly trembling.
[Aurora] “Never again . . .”
[Caleb] “What did you say right now?”
[Aurora] “Oh, nothing!”
Aurora looked like he squirmed around in his seat as Caleb tried to read his friend’s mind.
Before Caleb spoke, another voice intruded in their chat.
[Caleb’s Other Friend] “Hey Caleb! Come over here!”
Caleb turned around and looked behind him to see a group hailing him.
[Aurora] “They want to talk with you Caleb, you should go.”
He looked back at Aurora unsettlingly. He didn’t want Aurora to be alone.
[Caleb] “All right then~”
Caleb walked over to the other group as Aurora was still absorbed in his book . . . or is he?
[Aurora] Caleb, my dear, dear friend, the news was warning enough for me to prepare
for what will come.
He looked over his book at Caleb.
[Aurora] You are the only close friend I have in this world. I do want to cherish these
last moments we may possibly spend together.
The bell rang out loud for the entire campus to hear and the students fumbled to sit down.
Caleb was situated across the room from Aurora.
The academy was on top of a hill far from the city. Aurora was at the window seat gazing
outside. They were on the third floor of the main school building. The city was in view and
with his sharp eyes, he can only see the lights from the red and blue sirens which were quickly
extinguished from sight.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
The bell rings, signaling the lunch period.
[Teacher] “Turn in all assignments, anything papers that isn’t in my hand within a minute will
not be accepted.”
Caleb went straight to Aurora after turning in his assignment.
[Caleb] “Hey Aurora, are you planning to do something after classes end?”
[Aurora] “No, not much really.”
[Caleb] “Cool! I was wondering if—”
Caleb’s words went through his ears and Aurora gave the occasional nod so he wouldn’t be
rude, but he was interested at the group of girls in the opposite corner of the class. He
listened in intently on their conversation. Two girls stood in front of their friend’s desk with
their friend having a noticeable feature, a bandaged arm.
[???] “Mary? You look pale. Are you alright?” one girl standing asked.
[Mary] “I’m perfectly fine, thanks for asking Nina. I’m just . . . exhausted, that’s all.”
[???] “Maybe you should head to the nurse’s office for some rest”, the other unnamed friend
said.
[Mary] “No, no, no, I’m . . . I’m . . . . . fff—finnnn—”
The other two girls stared at their now passed out friend.
[Nina] “Mary, are you alright?”
Aurora stood immediately on alert with his back straightened out at the sight. He soon
noticed the hand waving in front of his face.
[Caleb] “Aurora? Are you listening?”
[Aurora] “Yes, yes I am!”
Aurora quickly responds but that only made Caleb curious at what caught is attention.
Aurora realizes that he had played that out horribly as Caleb turned to the three girls.
[Nina] “Mary!!”
Mary’s first friend, Nina, cried out over her.
The bandages were loosely tied as they now started to unwrap itself and fall to the floor,
revealing a bite mark which hadn’t healed.
Just at the perfect time, other students in the class looked to the back of the class to find
Mary passed out with a gaping bite wound.
[Other Classmate #1] “Oh my God!”
[Other Classmate #2] “What the—?”
A commotion stirred throughout the classroom as Caleb was about to help the girl.
[Aurora] “Wait Caleb!”
He stopped and turned.
[Caleb] “What is it Aurora? Make it quick!”
[Aurora] “You shouldn’t help her, let me do it.”
Caleb’s face displayed confusion as Nina piggy-backed her friend Mary.
[??? Still] “We’ve got to get her to the nurse!” the other friend exclaimed.
A low groan reverberated in the class, the hearth of the groan coming from Mary.
[Nina] “Mary? Don’t bother doing anything! We’ll get you to the nurse!” Nina assured her.
Mary raised her head and the other friend screamed.
[Nina] “What is it Sarah?”
The friend, Sarah, pointed at Mary who peeked over her shoulder.
[Sarah] “Her pupils . . . they’ve become white!”
Before she turned her head to look, blood splattered all over the surrounding desks and
ceiling.
[Nina] “AAAAAAAAH!”
The high-pitched shrill could make anyone temporarily deaf but it quickly ended as quickly as
it started.
The other friend covered her mouth and stared. After that brief moment, she dashed out of
the classroom and into the halls.
[Caleb] “What?!”
Caleb can only stare in horror as the girl, Mary or so, had suddenly bit Nina’s neck. The two
fell onto the floor side by side, the friend bleeding and Mary lay swallowing the tender piece
of flesh.
[Some Student] “What the hell?”
Weak-stomached students regurgitated at the sight.
Mary, or whatever it is, slowly stood on both feet. No one spoke a word until they suddenly
heard a loud snap.
[ Aurora] “Hey Mary!”
Everyone turned to look at Caleb, or was it Caleb? He turned his head quickly to find Aurora
with the pointed end of a makeshift wooden stick created from breaking the leg of his chair.
[ Aurora] “Eat this!”
Aurora stood tall. He sprinted forward and stabbed Mary’s head at full force. He tripped from
his momentum but he finished the job just as he planned. He looked over beside him to find
the now deceased Mary with a chair’s wooden leg sticking out of her eye socket. What’s worse
is that he now had some gushy eye fluid on his shirt and some blood stains.
[Aurora] “If I survive longer than I expected, I would at least liked it if this shirt was not
dirtied so quickly, and at it is the start too!”
The response to Aurora’s sudden action was filled with the sound of the now emptying sound
of students’ stomachs, through lots of puking.
Aurora looked down at Mary’s corpse.
[Aurora] “I’m sorry about that Mary . . . . . . Is what I should say but you haven’t returned my
hundred bucks!!”
For good measure, he kicked the wooden leg deeper into the eye socket, getting a bit more
blood splatter everywhere and on his pants.
[ Aurora] “Argh! More blood on my cloths!”
[Other Classmate #3] “What did you do? Did you just murder Mary?”
[Aurora] “Murder? If anything, I would have labeled her as ‘deceased’ the moment she
happened to ‘collapse’ on her desk.”
[Caleb] “What? Aurora, can you explain please?”
To Aurora’s surprise, Caleb acted surprisingly calm. Not many welcomed the sight of blood and
eye guts flowing out from the eye socket of a girl, plus the little bit of brain matter being
plainly visible for everyone to see.
[Aurora] “Well, I believe that Mary was pretty much dead the moment she passed out. The
paleness of her skin was very irregular, as if she was a walking corpse. If anything, she must’ve
experienced organ failures, poor blood circulation, as well as some internal bleeding.”
[Some Other Classmate]“But if that were true, then why is she still able to walk? Did you just
kill a living person?”
[Aurora] “Well, you see—”
The teacher’s heels resounded from the halls. The doors swung open as she marched in and
cut off Aurora’s statement.
[Teacher (Female BTW)] “I saw Sarah running out screaming like a madwoman. What happen
—?”
The first expression was shock, and then came horror.
[Teacher] “Oh my God!”
She rushed over to Mary whose body rested in front of Aurora.
She only saw Aurora’s bloody cloths.
[Teacher] “What did you do?”
[Aurora] “Well, umm, it’s self-explanatory, well, most of it.”
[Teacher] “The chairman will have to deal with you! This is very serious! You’ll have to go to
court! You’re lucky you’re not 18 yet or you might get a death sentence!”
The teacher got out her handkerchief and covered her mouth, checking the body and
removing the splintered wooden leg.
[Teacher] “Caleb, escort Aurora to the chairman please!”
[Caleb] “Um, ok! Let’s go Aurora!”
As they made their way to the door, Aurora faintly heard a small moaning noise underneath
the loud commotion within the class.
[Aurora] “Wait Caleb!”
The pool of blood and needlessly large blood splatter made it evident that Mary’s friend,
Nina, should not be able to live at all, much less move, or it was supposed to be that way.
Nina still slowly rose up regardless, shocking everyone, or was it everyone?
[Teacher] “Nina?”
The teacher stepped back, trembling at the bloody sight of a girl who shouldn’t be alive, but
with high heels and a needlessly large pool of blood, she stumbled and hit the floor.
[Aurora] “Well, that is what you would describe as an undead creature I supposed?”
Aurora spoke in a surprisingly calm voice.
The now undead Nina pinned the homeroom teacher to the ground and started to gnaw on
the teacher’s right arm.
[Teacher] “EEEEEEP!”
Caleb wasted no time and dive-kicked undead Nina and Aurora tended to the teacher, though
he did look reluctant to treat the teacher.
[Caleb] “Aurora! Get the Ms. Anderson to the nurse!”
Caleb yelled a command at Aurora but he didn’t follow them.
[Aurora] “No, I’m sorry but I really don’t think that is the right course of action.”
Caleb turned around to Aurora.
[Caleb] “Why?”
[Aurora] “Well my prime example is Nina over there that was bit and surprisingly still
moving.”
The undead Nina rose back up and moaned at a low-pitch.
[Aurora] “Excuse me. I have to borrow this wooden ruler.”
Aurora asked a girl sitting in her desk near the front of the classroom for a ruler.
[Aurora] “And please step back Caleb.”
With a snap, Aurora has his new makeshift wooden weapon. With two halves of a ruler, he
decided it was time to experiment with this undead creature and its potentials, by running
and jabbing one half of the ruler at splintered end right into Nina’s heart.
(A/N A wooden ruler snapped in half becomes two. One end of a ruler half is splintered, good
for stabbing soft spots like the eye! Or flesh I guess~)
He took a few steps back and held the other half of his ruler in his left hand.
[Aurora] “Wow, the ruler held up better than I thought, then again her muscles are really
relaxed.”
Nina didn’t heed her injuries and limped forward.
[Ms. Anderson-Teacher Revealed!] “How can Nina still be moving if her heart has been
stabbed?”
Ms. Anderson questioned Aurora who responded briefly.
[Aurora] “Well, she is something you can call as undead who rises up from the grave after
death. Whether it is caused by a virus or disease, I’ve dealt with it before.”
Aurora took a stance by holding the splintered ruler with his left hand and placed his right
hand behind the ruler.
“Even necromancy”, Aurora silently said.
Caleb couldn’t hear that last statement and only responded with huh? As Aurora jammed the
splintered ruler into Nina’s eye socket, much like what he had done with Mary, and forced it
deeper with his right hand.
Even with that, Nina still grabbed both his arms.
[Aurora] “Tsk!”
Before she took a bite, Aurora kneed her stomach and got her in a choke hold. His left was on
Nina’s head and his right was under her chin. He used all of his strength in his left hand to
push down on her head and his right applied the same force but forced her jaw up so she
wouldn’t be able to open her mouth for a bite. Following up with the hold, he ran and flung
Nina out the window, shattering glass and causing shards to fly out the window as well as Nina
who plummeted to the ground level.
A loud splat ended Nina’s fall as her bloody corpse had its limbs twisted to a point it can be
called unreal.
“Choke holds aren’t best if those things wants to bite you but I accomplished what I needed
to.”
He got a quick view at the academy gates. He was very unnerved when he saw the gates open
and some blood around the walls. Looking beyond the walls, beyond the small forest
surrounding the academy, the city was set aflame. He heard high-pitched shrills and screams
from the lower floors through the window and at the ground, he could see several students
running away from a mob of undead.
[Aurora] It won’t be long before they get up to this floor.
Without delay, he turned to see Caleb wrapping Ms. Anderson’s wound using some of fabric of
his uniform he tore off from his sleeve.
Most of the other students ran out of the class in panicked expressions, making some teachers
look out into the halls from their classes and making students, who are still in lunch, ponder
questioningly from their actions on the third floor. Most people on the third floor seemed to
not have realized the current situation.
[Caleb] “Come on Aurora! We have to help her!”
Aurora went over to Ms. Anderson’s front desk and grabbed the largest pair of scissors he
could find.
Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.
[Ms. Anderson] “Aurora?”
Aurora sighed.
[Aurora] “I’m very sorry to you but there is some disease is currently coursing through your
veins.”
[Ms. Anderson] “Wh-What?”
[Aurora] “This disease is very special.”
Aurora pointed at the bite as Caleb decided to step back.
[Aurora] “It is transferred through bodily fluids and that bite gave you a mouthful of saliva.”
[Caleb] “What do you mean?”
[Aurora] “She’ll turn into an unintelligible walking corpse with no other purpose than to feed
upon living people like the recently deceased Nina and Mary or undead as I would call them.”
Ms. Anderson covered her mouth as a single tear flowed from her eyes.
[Ms. Anderson] “But such things aren’t possible right?”
Her pleas sounded desperate.
[Ms. Anderson] “It can’t be true!”
Aurora held back his words and Caleb wasn’t able to come up with anything.
(A/N Most of the Ms. Anderson sequence isn’t necessary to read but if you like to see mature
teachers grieving in the face of death then please continue or find the A/N that says STOP)
Ms. Anderson stood up and chuckled until she became furious.
[Ms. Anderson] “You are kidding right? There is no disease that makes people into walking
corpses!!! There is no such thing right?!”
Aurora held his peace as Ms. Anderson stomped with every step as she faced Aurora.
[Ms. Anderson] “MR. AURORA! ANSWER BEFORE YOU HAVE TO FACE THE SCHOOL
COMMITTEE AND SUFFER THE WORST OF THE WORST PUNISHMENT!”
[Aurora] “. . . . .”
[Ms. Anderson] “ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING!”
Ms. Anderson raised her left hand and attempted to slap Aurora who grabbed her wrist before
she could make a hit.
[Aurora] “I’m sorry Ms. Anderson. There is nothing else left for you, plus corporal punishment
is not allowed here. If you want to see the full problem caused by this disease, look to the
city.”
(A/n Look up corporal punishment if you don’t know what it is)
She bobbed her head left and saw the smoke rising from the city, blocking the sun from view.
He walked to the window slowly, putting her hands on the glass panels as she looked, mouth-
gaping.
She chuckled and this chuckled became a maniacal laughter.
[Ms. Anderson] “I’m fine right? Aurora, you managed to fix any problem you come face with,
acing every of my exams too. Tell me, can you help me too? It shouldn’t be too late. I’ve heard
a rumor that you were able to create artificial medicine to help one of the academy student’s
parents because their parent helped to support you in your projects!”
Her hands clasped together as she bargained with him.
[Ms. Anderson] “What do you say? I can help make the chairman give you a personal
recommendation for your university of choice!”
[Aurora] “I’m afraid that this is out of my hands Ms. Anderson.”
Caleb decided to step in once more.
[Caleb] “Are you serious about everything Aurora?”
Before they both noticed, Ms. Anderson’s leg gave up made her fall to the ground as she
started tearing up.
[Ms. Anderson] “It can’t be true right? I went downtown last week and everything seemed
well!”
Caleb tried to comfort her but Aurora grabbed his hand.
[Aurora] “Give her space. Let’s step out the class for a while.”
The young teacher only at the aged of twenty-six was bawling, wiping the tears and snot with
her arms as Aurora and Caleb to step outside.
Aurora was leaning on the right side of the door while Caleb was on the left.
[Aurora] “The five stages of grief isn’t it?”
Aurora’s silent murmurs weren’t heard by Caleb who soon asked “What?”
[Aurora] “Nothing.”
(A/N I don’t like to keep making these note but I have to make sure that my awesome readers
{I hope everyone is awesome} can understand what I am trying to write. Search up Five Stages
of Grief if you haven’t already or don’t know it, also STOP here)
The moment they stepped outside, a bloody student ran through the halls screaming like a
madman as several undead students made their way up the stairs.
With perfect timing, the PA system turned on.
[Announcer] “Students! Attention!”
The voice was very strained and the person was panting as there was a banging noise in the
background.
[Announcer] “Staff, if there is any staff left, get all students back into class and—”
The sound of a door collapsing and glass shattering resounded in the PA system.
[Announcer] “Get back Mr. Stone! I hated you anyways!”
[Undead Mr. Stone] “*Growl*”
The sound of struggle followed as the PA system cut off.
[Caleb] “The first floor office operates the PA system right?”
[Aurora] “Undoubtedly, the first floor is overrun.”
[Person in Hallway] “AHHH!!”
Caleb had his fists ready to go and help combat the undead until Aurora patted his back.
[Aurora] “Don’t even think about it. We’ll tend to Ms. Anderson and make our way out from
here.”
They both stepped back inside with Caleb grimacing. Screams, yells, and shrills were then
muffled as they closed the door.
Ms. Anderson stood tall with her heels and stared out the window.
[Caleb] “Ms. Anderson?
[Ms. Anderson] “Its fine boys, I shouldn’t be depressed when there are others who suffer my
same fate.”
She turned and gave them a bright smile as a small tear flowed down her cheek.
[Ms. Anderson] “Its all fine now boys.”
Ms. Anderson took notice of the scissors Aurora held.
[Ms. Anderson] “I think that you were going to end my life now right Aurora? So I wouldn’t
become one of those corpses?”
[Aurora] “That was my plan because in a moral sense, you can stay human when you pass on.”
It took time for the two of them to see Ms. Anderson’s paling skin as she walked closer to
them.
[Ms. Anderson] “I’ll accept what has to be done.”
Aurora clutched the scissors in his hands tightly as Ms. Anderson turned the around to gaze at
the city once more through the windows.
Aurora looked at Ms. Anderson in resignation.
[Aurora] Even all the years I spent living haven’t exactly steeled my heart.
Aurora sighed deeply.
[Aurora] “Ms. Anderson . . . you were a very nice teacher, one of the best I have met., that one
of the many truths in this world that I can share. Caleb can you get my bag?”
[Caleb] “Huh? Sure!”
He rushed around the desks as Ms. Anderson went into a coughing fit, splurging out some
blood as well as Aurora tried to comfort her knowing that this may be her final moments.
[Ms. Anderson] “You know Aurora, I loved my students, each and every one of them . . . even if
you dozed off or never listened to my lecture or disregard me every time during class, I still
cherished you all the same as the others.”
Caleb handed Aurora his bag.
[Caleb] “What do you need inside your bag anyways?”
Aurora pulled out a syringe and a vial. He uncapped the needle of the syringe and extracted
some of his experimental concoction from the vial.
[Caleb] “What is that?”
[Aurora] “It’s a drug, one of my own experiments of course. Ms. Anderson, give me your arm
please?”
Caleb pressed further with another question.
[Caleb] “Why do you have some weird drug for anyways?”
[Aurora] “I’ll give an explanation later. Ms. Anderson, this is a very special drug. It puts you to
sleep near instantly. After falling asleep, all major organs shut off one by one, the last organs
being shut down are the brain and heart. Even if you were to receive stimuli like pain, you
won’t respond since your pain receptors are cut off once the drug flows through you. It’s the
most peaceful passing one can have.”
Ms. Anderson nodded.
[Ms. Anderson] “Thank you Aurora, for allowing me to pass on peacefully at the very least.”
With a nod from Ms. Anderson, Aurora injected his drug and its effects showed immediately
when Ms. Anderson collapsed suddenly.
[Caleb] “So now its reality, you’ve killed a person . . .”
[Aurora] “No, I still need to finish the job.”
[Caleb] “Wait, what?”
Without a moment’s notice, Aurora jammed the scissors through the now deceased Ms.
Anderson’s eye and scrambled the brain.
[Caleb] “What was that for?”
[Aurora] “The disease reanimated the death, I merely let Ms. Anderson pass peacefully but I
have to make sure the corpse doesn’t just rise up.”
Caleb bit his right thumb nail and decided to let it slide.
Caleb sat down in a desk and took a deep breath.
Another scream came through the walls as Aurora packed his bags and tied his sneakers.
[Aurora] “We should head out now.”
His friend only nodded.
Caleb got up and walked to the door. In a swift motion, he pulled the door open and stepped
out with Aurora following.
He was greeted with the sight of a female student being devoured on by a former teacher who
was missing half of his face in front of the stairs. Their class was situated two classes down
from the stairs and had a good view of it.
[Panicking Student] “Uagh!”
Another student dashed around with a hand missing and two undead students following him.
Students and some teachers ran for their dear lives as Caleb wanted to rush in to help them.
[Aurora] “No Caleb! Let’s just go to the rooftop! Others will surely be there!”
Another scream came from the corridor which was not a good sign.
[Aurora] “Damn! They’re at the other stairs as well!”
They wouldn’t be able to go downstairs. There was a high chance for the other floors to be
swarming with undead by now. Jumping out the window isn’t an option unless you want to be
crippled as you are eaten alive.
Aurora was speculating about what could happen up on the roof but he didn’t have much time
to ponder. Aurora stared at Caleb.
[Aurora] So our end draws near.
The two then proceeded to the stairways that led to the roof, the only one that wasn’t swarming with the undead.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Aurora and Caleb went up three flights of stairs with a mob of undead students behind them.
[Caleb] “We’ve past the fourth floor so the roof is after this flight of stair!”
Aurora picked out the little details of crimson red that formed droplets on the stairs.
Without wasting time, the two had nearly reached the door to the roof as Aurora grabbed the
collar of Caleb’s uniform.
[Aurora] “Wait one moment Caleb!”
Caleb tumbled but regained balance as Aurora took the lead. He opened the roof’s door
slightly to spy on the small group resting there.
[Caleb] “What’s the matter? Those undead or whatever you call them are going to be
here after all!”
[Aurora] “We’ve got at least a minute before they reach us, they can’t climb stairs well with
their terrible motor skills unlike us. I saw blood droplets, one of them was injured. Now it is
time to see if it was a bite or not.”
Aurora sighted two guys and two girls.
[Aurora¬] Most people aren’t here. They probably didn’t make it up here, died, or went
to a different location.
He saw a one guy on the floor with his arm over his eyes, undoubtedly pale.
They were speaking so Aurora attempted to lip-read but he didn’t even translate a word before
their friend got up and started eating those in sight.
[Aurora] The answer to my assumptions came much faster than I thought.
Caleb took a peek at the rooftop.
[Caleb] “We could’ve helped them!”
[Aurora] “No chance, if you didn’t know, the moment we decide to step on the roof the person
turns immediately, even if we run quickly to dispose of the person, he’d turned and overpower
some poor fellow. So while he eats his friend—”
Abruptly, the door flung open as a girl and guy ran down the stairs screaming with arms
flailing. Aurora can only face palm himself.
[Aurora] “Idiots, the roof is safer than the building. Plus there’s a mob after us!”
It wasn’t much later until their screams were cut off. Soon, a dozen undead students were
turned the corner and proceeded slowly to the two of them.
[Aurora] “Whatever! Caleb! Go dive-kick the undead guy on the roof!”
Caleb dashed and dive-kicked the deceased person, now undead student, off of the meal it was
feasting on.
Aurora locked the rooftop door as the undead student rose up.
[Caleb] “These things are resilient!”
As its attention was on Caleb, Aurora snuck behind the undead student, kicked him down once
more, and jammed his scissors into the head letting a fountain of blood gush out from the
stab.
[Aurora] “Puew! I got some of that blood in my mouth!”
Without a moment’s haste, Aurora stabbed the now deceased girl to make sure she will not
rise up and become another undead person.
Caleb breathed a sigh of relief as he laid down on the rooftop. The door was banging loudly
from the onslaught of undead.
[Aurora] “Stand up Caleb. We don’t have much time left. We should start formulating a plan
to escape.”
[Caleb] “Aurora, even I know that coming to the rooftop was a death sentence for us. Only one
path out and that’s through the overrun stairs. We don’t have rope with us to climb down and
even if we did, there is still a bunch of our fellow dead classmates lurking on the ground
floor.”
Aurora glanced over the roof to find many of undead classmates mostly wandering around.
Some were eating the bodies of students as well.
[Aurora] “You seemed really unfazed at accepting your death. Usually you would never give up
even at the end of it all.”
[Caleb] “I’m only living still because I greatly value our friendship Aurora. I’m sure you’re tired
so just lay down as well. The stars are great after all.”
Aurora stifled a chuckle.
[Aurora] “Idiot, it is daytime. The only star you can be staring at it the sun. You want to get
blind?”
Aurora lay down opposite to him.
[Caleb] “You can always look to the stars anytime during the day. The stars are still there, they
just barely move. Just the light from the sun shines over it.”
Caleb sat up.
[Caleb] “Well, at least we die together? Rig—”
To his surprise, Aurora stuck a needle right into Caleb’s neck.
[Aurora] “Right, though that used to be the plan Caleb.”
Aurora took the needle out and tossed the syringe off the roof. He gazed out at the city with
his back to Caleb.
[Caleb] “A-Aurora?”
[Aurora] “I brought the drug to let us both die peacefully. I knew about the disease when I
encountered rats acting as vectors for the disease. They bit my brother and he started to
attack me an hour later. He had to die as a result. It’s quite sad, all of my family members tend
to die off before I even reach the age of 18. Truth be told—”
Caleb struggled to keep his bearings as Aurora turned to smile.
[Aurora] “My father passed yesterday, the last of all my family members, as I turn 18 today.”
Caleb was shocked.
[Caleb] “It’s January! You’re birthday is in July!”
Aurora sighed. He still looked beyond the academy and at the city.
[Aurora] “I lied to you Caleb, I’m sorry, but my birthday is on January 1st, the first day of a
new year, that’s today. A never ending new year . . .”
(A/N I’m going with the idea that there isn’t a thing called winter break or Christmas in this
world)
The rooftop door broke down as a mob of undead reached out for Aurora.
[Aurora] “Rest peacefully, my best friend Caleb—”
He turned but was immediately tackled down by Caleb and thrown off the window while in a
hug.
[Aurora] Impossible! Even after a full dosage of the drug?
Everything seemed to slow down as Caleb whispered into his ears.
[Caleb] “I forgive you bud, we are the best of friend since childhood . . . right?”
They slammed onto the ground. Caleb instantly dies as Aurora was left still barely alive and
conscious but with a leg turned 180 upwards.
He gritted his teeth as he put his head back onto the ground. The undead limped slowly
towards him as he stifled a laugh.
[Aurora] “Silly me, why do I always put my friends’ at peace first when they worry about me
the most, even risking life and limb to be by my side?”
Three undead students knelt and started clawing their way into Aurora’s insides. He coughed
up blood but was not out cold from shock at all.
[Aurora] “I’ve experienced worse than this you damn undead monsters!”
One took a bite at his face, ripping out his right eye but he still was conscious through it all.
With his left eye, he could see the dangling line of optic nerve extending from his right that
was gobbled up by the undead student.
He could observe his intestines being ripped out from his gut but still continue on. His arms
were numb from repeated bites and his right leg was torn off from the body.
[Aurora] New record of staying conscious while getting killed.
He couldn’t celebrate his record any more as one gripped his heart and ripped it out. Blood
gushed all over and over his eyes before he gave up on life.
