The Behemoth

"The world we live in has never been a fair one. People expect certain things from us as if we can deliver exactly as they planned but that will never change." It was something a person I used to know said all the time.

The world I live in is filled with monsters that only appear in dungeons and as a hunter it is my job to kill them.

I'm not an amazing hunter. To be honest, I'm possibly the worst. In fact the guild I joined told me that I'll only get in the way so I should collect the loot and drops off the monsters when they have been killed but I need the money. I need it to survive. I don't have a family. I never had one and I never will.

Today the mission I signed up for is for a level 1 hunter. There are a total of 20 levels for a normal human but some exceptional people can go beyond that. You would probably assume I'm level 1 but unfortunately I'm only 0.5. A level that most people didn't even think existed. I can't use magic and I can't even wield a sword properly. I'm basically useless.

"Jun, get your ass over here"

That's the leader of the mission. He treats me like shit. He makes me carry all the luggage and doesn't even give me equal pay. I've nearly been killed so many times because he uses me as a distraction for the monsters to get away but I need the money no matter how little. I need it to survive. I've been told to kill myself and end the pain but since when have I been listening to other people. My dream is to one day become so powerful that I don't need to think to beat the most powerful opponents.

"Jun for the 3rd time. Get your ass over here before I pummel you the floor."

It's time for me to go then.

"I coming"

"Today you'll be helping us collect enough loot so we can get better weapons and so you can get minimum wage. HAHAHAHA."

"Hahaha hopefully you'll die today"

"WHAT DID YOU SAY TO ME"

"nothing"

"YOU BETTER WATCH YOUR MOUTH KID"

You see. I'm 16 years old and kids my age are normally getting paid at least an average sum but I only get paid minimum. Sometimes even less. I could try to get other jobs but unfortunately I don't have the qualifications.

"Let's get moving. You better not slow us down again Jun"

                               * * *

Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.

It's been 10 mins now and we've collected a reasonable amount of loot and money. A total sum that could keep me alive for a year.

"Alright Jun. Why don't you put that bag of money and all the luggage on the floor. EVERYONE LISTEN UP. In front of us is the boss room. That's where the behemoth stays. A level 1 behemoth is able to take down 5 men without a problem but we have 20 men today so it should be easy. Get ready and suited up. After killing this we'll be able to buy as much shit as we want"

Hmm. I might be weak but I'm pretty smart. I aced my exams to become a hunter at the age of 10. Looking around I can tell you that these people aren't smart at all but the leader isn't an idiot. He's fought a behemoth before. His entire squad got killed here last time. N-n-no way. D-did he make them fight it while took all the loota and ran away. He killed all of them.

"JUN MOVE IT"

He's a psychopath. This man is ready to kill just for the sake of money. All his friends killed by himself.

*THUMP*

The door behind me closed slowly and through the dust in the room I could see a giant figure. His eyes glowing bright red. He roared with all his might and swung his sword to the ground. The shock moved the entire room.

Its slow. His moves are heavy and aggressive but are extremely slow.

Wait where is the leader. Did he take the loot. Did he not even enter the room. Looking around I could see the confusion among the faces. They are scared, angry and frustrated. So much so that they forgot about the behemoth.

The monster swung it's sword horizontally, brutally killing the men in its path. The sword was blunt. It didn't cut of limbs, it smashed the people into the walls breaking more bones than one could count. It has a terrifying amount of range.

The only exit was the boss room door and that can only be opened when the boss is killed. Slowly the behemoth had killed more than half of the people in the room leaving only 5 alive. Someone needs to do something now. A lot of us have already died and I don't plan on dying yet. It's time for me to step up.

"Alright people, snap out of it. You have two options. Either die here or kill this thing and seek revenge on the person who is responsible for so many deaths."

"Jun's right. We can't stay here. Even though he's pretty crap at everything, he has a point. We need to do this. We need to kill it"

These guys are assholes. Even when complimenting me they have a sinister tone to everything they say.

The behemoth felt our killing intent and in a split second had moved behind us and had killed everyone one except from me. It stood behind me. Staring at me. It's shadow is enormous enough to cover the entire area. Why am I still alive? Why am I left alive? It was pure luck. I survived because of pure luck. PURE LUCK! The leader will pay. That prick will pay with his life!

An immense amount of rage took over me. I felt out of control. I couldn't see anything but a dark red flame slowly burning up. The flame grew bigger and bigger. I could feel my body move in ways that had never moved before but all I saw was the flame. The flame grew big enough to swallow me and so it did.

I regained consciousness. I saw the behemoth lying in front of me dead. My clothes were covered in blood. The behemoth had multiple wounds on it. Who saved me? Who killed this thing? I looked down at my hand to see a white dagger. A white dagger covered in blood. The same blood that was on my clothes. The same blood that was gushing out of the behemoths neck. Did I kill it? Was I the one who killed this monstrosity?

The boss room door opened and no one entered. There was no one there. Darkness covered my eyes as I fell to the ground losing consciousness.
