Chapter 14: Oops

Chapter 14: Oops

The four or five remaining goblins stood in shock, their jaws almost dropping to the ground.

Taking their moment of shock, Kyra pulled out one of two remaining mana potions. She downed the entirety of it. Inwardly, Kyra searched for the little orb of mana within her. It disappeared.

Dang it how did Marc do it? Kyra panicked as the goblins regained some semblance of rationale. How the hell did marc do all those moves?

"Mana Bolt!" She was instantly humiliated. No orb manifested. Facepalming herself, Kyra inwardly called 'mana bolt'.

A small teal orb gathered in her right palm. While a blush tainted her cheeks, Kyra released the mana bolt and struck down two more goblins. It felt much easier to direct it for some reason. On a roll, Kyra took a few steps forward and summoned two more bolts, one on either hand. Her MP bar dropped lower. With little expertise, Kyra lugs the bolts at the remaining two or three of the goblin horde.

Without a doubt, Kyra finished them.

[You have leveled up! Stat points +1]

She smiled, but it seems the scale of the explosion was quite small, since there was one last goblin standing, knees shaking. Great. Kyra made a disgusted face. Her MP was running seriously low and she didn't want to waste another [Mana Bolt] without checking its price. But she was in the high of battle. And daggers were on standby in her inventory. Chuckling, she inwardly summoned menu and clicked on inventory. From within it, she drew out two of the daggers she collected and stalked towards the goblin. This will be easy, Kyra told herself.

However, it seemed like goblins had more to them than their irrational instinct to attack. The remaining cave goblin turned its tail and fled.

Kyra smiled and followed. It wasn't like she had much else to do anyway. The goblin was very nimble in its ways of escape. It lept up the large spikes and ricochetted off the sides, bouncing between the large pillars and ignoring the small spikes on the ground. Kyra struggled to keep up. But somehow, she did.

Seeing the agile movements of her opponent, Kyra tried to imitate it. While she didn't share the same ability to leap off the side of something, Kyra climbed onto a broken spike and jumped onto a smaller barb, with a rounder tip, and onto the next. When there weren't any feasible steps for her to jump, Kyra simply landed on the ground and ran some more before repeating. This way, Kyra was able to keep up more easily.

Soon though the goblin had left the spiked maze. In front of Kyra there were the three tunnel entrances. The goblin decisively launched itself into the tunnel on the left.

Kyra jumped in after it, feeling the stale air rush by like a fresh breeze. Compared to the semi-lit domed room, this part of the tunnel was pitch dark. The mana crystals were embedded behind her, emitting a faint blue glow that kept her from tripping. They buzzed with delight as each breath brought Kyra closer to the goblin. Her daggers were poised.

Even though she couldn't sense mana inside her, Kyra knew it was there, and at her use. And she admitted, the explosive effect was rather awesome - even if it costs mana. Adrenaline pumped through her head, and a song hummed in her brain. Momentarily, she almost caught up with the goblin in front--

Then the tunnel curved and split into two and the goblin vanished. Gritting her teeth, Kyra halted and launched herself back down the other way, the goblin a green blur in front of her once more. Kyra licked her lips and smirked. She knew this feeling.

Track and field. Seventh grade. While sports weren't really her thing, Kyra was chosen to be one of the relay runners for her "house" - a categorization of students for athletic activity purposes - and she practiced so much during those three weeks before Track and Field day. Her team wouldn't lose with her in it.

And the day came. She was the last runner. The final 100 meter sprint. Second in place, a few seconds behind. Her legs pulsed and pushed her forward. First place was so close. Her heart burned. Her lungs screamed. Her legs felt as if trekking through mud. But she made it. Neck to neck she lept forward at the last second and won.

While she did stumble and nearly trip herself over right after - but they don't talk about that.

Kyra was close to the goblin now, that she could hear the goblin panting. With light up ahead the dark tunnel, Kyra readied herself. And she jumped. She tackled the goblin and they skid into the light. Kyra jammed a dagger into the back of its chest and it dissolved into glowing sparkles. She panted and collected the loot, inwardly celebrating winning the race again.

It was after storing the gold coins did Kyra notice the searing light around her. She shielded her eyes and stood up. Kyra's eyes scanned the room as her pupils adjusted. With a slightly blurry vision, she saw a sea of green. As her eyes refocused, the sharp claws and deadly yellow eyes of goblins came into vision. A multitude of tags appeared over their heads. Apart from the ones holding their spears and daggers defensively, there were a few towards the back. Their tag was different from the white tags of the cave goblins and warrior goblins.

She squinted.

[Chief Cave Goblin Lvl. 10]

They were green tags.

Following the bulkier and taller chief goblins, Kyra's eyes trailed upward, where a pair of glowing red eyes blazed through the dark. Above them was a red tag.

[Hobgoblin Boss Lvl. 10]

"Damn it." Kyra cursed.
