Life is not a game.
Nor is it something to enjoy.
No.
What it was is a challenge.
A challenge to us, to see who can live longer.
That was the conclusion I came to at the age of 15. It had been a long day and even longer night, working the night shift at the local 24/7 supermarket.
I had just finished my shift and was preparing to go home. Me and my friend, Jay had been joking as we crossed the street.
I remember there were a couple other people beside us, it was the start of a day for normal people after all. Contrary to your expectations, we had not been crushed by a car. The people behind us however were not so lucky.
After the incident, we had found out that it was a typical case of drunk driving, only more…wrong. The driver had apparently tried to kill himself by drinking too much, only to get drunk and forget about killing himself.
Stolen novel; please report.
Then he had gotten into a car and for no apparent reason, began running over people. Including the couple who were walking behind us.
Honestly, it was quite a sight. A blood smeared car running over the people right behind me. I had even managed to get a glimpse of it, from the corner of my eye. Blood, bones and entrails flying everywhere, a maniacal cackling resounding from the open car window and the wind shield wipers… clearing the bits and blood on the windscreen.
All in all, a pretty dramatic scene. Especially when the driver promptly drove into the supermarket I worked at, before getting his brain impaled by a toothbrush through his eyes.
In the end, we had to be escorted to the police station and had our statements taken. We were released after a couple of hours, I out of curiosity asked the police officer about how many had died. The answer was fifty-six, including the killer.
As expected, I was shocked. Fifty-six deaths was no small number, especially since I only had one life. I contemplated about this number all the way until I was home.
As I was sitting on the bed, wondering if there was someone who would be laughing at the deaths that just occurred, it hit me.
Death. Death would laugh at those who just died. It would rejoice, for more have succumbed to him.
Life was a challenge to stay alive, to see how long one could run from death.
So, what should one do to stay away from death?
One must live.
