Chapter 8 - Frustration

The morning light filtered through the window as Alexander awoke, feeling the lingering aches from his endurance challenge. Despite the discomfort, he felt a renewed sense of purpose and readiness for whatever came next. Today, he planned to delve deeper into the System and understand more about the skills he could develop and the challenges he would face.

After a hearty breakfast provided by Marta, who once again greeted him with her warm, southern hospitality, Alexander set out for the Elder's Hall. The elder had mentioned that the hall would provide further guidance on his journey.

"Good luck today, dear. Remember, you have the strength to overcome any challenge," Marta encouraged him as he left the inn.

The village was serene, the quietness only occasionally interrupted by the chirping of birds. It felt surreal to think that just beyond this peaceful setting lay a multiverse at war. The Elder's Hall was a place where he hoped to find more answers and direction.

Inside the hall, the elder was waiting. His presence exuded calm and wisdom, making Alexander feel at ease.

"Welcome back, Alexander," the elder greeted. "I trust you are ready to continue your journey."

"I am," Alexander replied. "I want to understand more about the challenges and the skills I need to develop. The pain tolerance test was... enlightening, to say the least."

The elder nodded. "The System is designed to push you to your limits, to help you discover and unlock your true potential. You have taken the first step, but there are many more ahead."

Alexander hesitated for a moment before asking, "What would be the best way to train my mind, body, and mana? How can I focus my training to achieve this?"

The elder smiled, pleased by the question. "To train your body, you need to build physical strength, agility, and endurance. Combat challenges like 'Trial by Combat' will help you hone these skills. For your mind, you need to develop mental resilience and strategic thinking. Endurance challenges and tasks that require problem-solving will be crucial. As for mana, you need to understand and control its flow within you. Practicing mana channeling and taking on challenges that test your magical abilities will be key."

He gestured for Alexander to sit. "Today, we will discuss the different paths you can take and the skills you can develop. The System offers a variety of challenges, each tailored to test and improve different aspects of your abilities."

Alexander listened intently as the elder explained the categories of challenges. There were combat challenges to hone fighting skills, endurance tests to build resilience, and skill development tasks to enhance specific abilities. Each challenge came with its own set of rewards and difficulties.

"The skills you develop are crucial to your success," the elder continued. "They are divided into levels based on proficiency: Novice (Levels 1 to 10), Initiate (Levels 11 to 25), Apprentice (Levels 26 to 50), Adept (Levels 51 to 75), Expert (Levels 76 to 90), and Master (Levels 91 to 100). As you progress through these levels, your skills become more refined and effective."

Alexander nodded, absorbing the information. "I understand. What do you recommend I focus on next?"

The elder smiled. "Your Pain Tolerance skill has shown your resilience. Now, you should focus on a challenge that builds your combat abilities. There is a common challenge called 'Trial by Combat' that would be an excellent next step."

The idea of testing his combat skills excited Alexander. It was a chance to put his martial arts training to use and further develop his abilities.

"I'll take on the 'Trial by Combat,'" Alexander decided.

The elder handed him a new scroll. "This scroll will transport you to the combat arena. Remember, the key to success is not just physical strength but also mental focus and strategic thinking. Good luck."

With a deep breath, Alexander activated the scroll. In an instant, he found himself in a large, open arena. The surroundings were stark, with high stone walls and a sandy floor. The air was charged with anticipation. Near him, he saw a common iron longsword resting on a stand. He picked it up, feeling its weight and balance. It felt solid, reliable.

A system prompt appeared before him:

New quest: Trial by Combat

Prove your combat skills by defeating all opponents in the arena. Use your sword art and strategic thinking to overcome the challenges.

* Defeat the first opponent [0/1]

* Defeat the second opponent [0/1]

Defeat the third opponent [0/1]

* Reward: 10 Tutorial Points and a Common Iron Longsword.

Alexander took a deep breath and readied himself. The first opponent emerged from the shadows, a hulking figure clad in armor and wielding a massive sword. Alexander's heart pounded, but he remembered his grandfather's teachings: stay calm, focus, and use the opponent's strength against them.

As the opponent charged, Alexander sidestepped, using his agility to avoid the heavy swing. He countered with a swift strike with his iron longsword, aiming for the opponent's side.

"Congratulations! You have increased your Sword Arts skill to Level 26."

The battle was intense, each movement a test of his skill and reflexes. Alexander's training took over, his body moving with precision and purpose. He used his martial arts training to assist with footwork and retaliations, enhancing his swordplay. He blocked, parried, and struck with calculated efficiency.

Finally, with a well-placed kick followed by a sword strike, he sent the opponent sprawling to the ground. The system prompt appeared:

"Congratulations! You have defeated the first opponent."

The second opponent was faster, more agile. Alexander had to adapt quickly, using his speed and dexterity to keep up with the flurry of attacks. It was a dance of offense and defense, each move requiring complete focus.

"Congratulations! You have increased your Sword Arts skill to Level 27."

The battle raged on, the opponent relentless. Alexander found himself pushed to his limits, but he embraced the challenge. Each strike and counterstrike was an opportunity to test his limits and grow stronger.

With a final, powerful strike, he defeated the second opponent. The system prompt confirmed his success:

"Congratulations! You have defeated the second opponent."

The third opponent was the most formidable, a skilled warrior with a mastery of both weapons and hand-to-hand combat. Alexander's heart raced as he faced this new challenge, but he remained focused. However, the thoughts of his previous battles and the stakes involved began to creep in.

What if I lose? Can I handle the pressure? he questioned himself. The doubt was a distraction he couldn't afford.

As the battle began, Alexander struggled to overcome his habits of friendly sparring. He couldn't help but hesitate, his mind plagued by the fear of truly harming his opponent. This hesitation cost him dearly. In a split second, his opponent disarmed him, the sword clattering to the ground out of reach.

No! Focus, Alex! You can't afford to be soft here!

The opponent didn't hesitate, launching an aggressive attack. Alexander had to rely on his martial arts skills to grapple and evade. Every move was a desperate attempt to survive, each second a reminder of the seriousness of real combat. He blocked a punch, countering with an elbow strike, then swept his opponent's leg. They both tumbled to the ground, grappling for control.

The pain from the endurance test still lingered in his body, but he pushed through it, driven by the fear of losing. He bit his lip, the taste of blood sharp in his mouth, using the pain to focus his mind. Tears of frustration and determination welled up in his eyes, but he refused to give in.

Will you let some pain stop you?! he mentally screamed at himself.

With a surge of adrenaline, Alexander managed to break free and scramble towards his fallen sword. He grabbed it and turned just in time to parry an incoming strike. The final moments of the battle were a blur of desperate energy. He used everything he had learned, combining his martial arts with his swordsmanship. But in the end, his opponent’s experience and ruthlessness overcame him. With a brutal, well-placed strike, Alexander was disarmed once more and sent sprawling to the ground. His vision blurred as he saw the third opponent looming over him, victorious.

"Trial by Combat failed."

The system prompt was like a knife to his heart. Alexander lay there, breathing heavily, his body aching and his mind reeling from the defeat. He felt a deep, overwhelming sense of frustration and anger at himself. He knew he had the skills to win, yet there had been a blockage in his mind that he couldn't overcome.

Why did I hesitate? Why couldn't I push through? His thoughts were a whirlwind of self-doubt and regret. He struggled to his feet, feeling the weight of his failure pressing down on him.

As he was transported back to the village, Alexander's thoughts were dark and tumultuous. He wanted nothing more than to try the challenge again, to prove to himself that he could do it. He marched back to the Elder's Hall, his determination fueled by anger and frustration.

"I want to try the Trial by Combat again," he demanded, his voice shaking with emotion.

The elder looked at him with calm, knowing eyes. "Alexander, you must first resolve your own challenges before you can face the arena again. Your fear, your frustrations—they are holding you back. You must confront them and find peace within yourself."

"But I can do it! I know I can!" Alexander protested, feeling the sting of tears in his eyes.

The elder shook his head gently. "Not until you address the blockages in your mind and heart. Reflect on what happened, and find a way to overcome your inner struggles. Only then will you be ready."

Feeling defeated and more alone than ever, Alexander trudged back to the inn. The weight of his failure hung heavy on his shoulders. He entered his room and sank onto the bed, his mind a storm of emotions. He felt sad and lonely, afraid that he was losing the opportunity he finally gained to be someone. The fear of being powerless and insignificant gnawed at him, and he didn't know how to overcome it.

Marta's warm presence was a small comfort as she knocked on his door and brought him a meal. "You look like you've had a rough day, dear," she said kindly.

Alexander managed a weak smile. "You could say that, Marta. I failed the challenge. I just... I don't know if I can do this."

Marta placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Everyone stumbles, hun. It's part of the journey. You have to find the strength within yourself to keep going. I believe in you."

Her words were kind, but they didn't erase the ache in his heart. As he ate in silence, Alexander's thoughts churned. He needed to find a way to overcome his fears and frustrations. He had to prove to himself that he was worthy of this chance. The path ahead was uncertain, but he couldn't give up now. He had to face his inner demons and find the strength to continue.

As he lay in bed that night, the darkness seemed to press in on him, amplifying his doubts and fears. With a heavy heart and a mind full of frustration, Alexander drifted into a restless sleep.
