Democratic Republic of Earth (DRE)

  Fifty years after the Final World War, planet Earth is experiencing peace. With the exception of a few warring factions in Africa and the Middle East, Earth is unified under one global government with the seat of power in New Tokyo. Within the next decade, experts have predicted that the few disunified factions will crumble and be forced to integrate into the DRE.

How we got here

  Before the final war, when people still thought in terms of countries and national borders, the top candidates for the new Global Economic Exchange headquarters were the U.S., Russia, or China. What began as a simple disagreement over mining rights in Africa became the final spark that lit the nuclear bonfire. Three great factions formed from the disagreement. The remains of the U.N., formed from the American continents and Europe, as well as Unified Korea, Japan, the Indian Federation, and a few of the nations on the outer edges of Africa. The Asian People's Coalition , formed from China and many of the southern Asian countries. The Moscow-Riyadh Accord formed from the Russian Federation, a few northeastern European countries, the central countries of the African continent and many of the Arab nations of the Middle East.

  The MRA-affiliated African countries did not last long and fell into chaos and have been under control of regional warlords ever since. The ancient mountainous tribes of the Middle East fell from the MRA next, unable to stay unified against the threats from both sides. The APC as a whole crumbled from within almost before any serious fighting could take place. The long-oppressed Chinese people overthrew the dictatorship that had forced them into an unwanted war and formed a rough democracy, which immediately chose to be absorbed into the U.N.. Unfortunately, the MRA decided to put up the bloodiest defense that they could and illegally used nuclear weapons against the U.N. countries. The U.N. returned the gesture in kind, and nearly wiped the MRA off the map, saving only the resource-heavy eastern region of Russia. The crumbling MRA government, with its stockpile of nuclear weapons used or destroyed and its most aggressive leaders dead, surrendered unconditionally to the U.N.. The U.N. government decided to impose almost no harsh punishments on the crumbling remains of the MRA because 28% of their population had been killed in the nuclear devastation and large swaths of land were uninhabitable because of the nuclear fallout.

  With the war over, the U.N. realized the world had to change. Promoting planet wide unity to recover from the most devastating war in human history became top priority. They needed a unified world government and for that, a new capital. They chose to rebuild a city that had been devastated in the early days of the conflict as a symbol of peace and unity. New Tokyo and the Democratic Republic of Earth was born. For the first time in human history, the overwhelming majority of humanity was unified under a single banner and the world entered a new era of peace, prosperity and scientific advancement.

  With large swaths of the world still uninhabitable, humanity began to look beyond our bruised and battered planet and set its sights on the other planets of our solar system. The time it took to go to the moon was cut down from four days to less than half an hour. The journey to Mars was also cut down from 10 months to around fifteen hours. Thanks to the technology developed to clean the irradiated parts of the world, similar terraforming technology was developed to start the process on the moon and soon, Mars.

  Humanity as a race became confident in their position within the Sol System. This time period became known as the Pax Terra. We also became sure of one truth: if humanity had advanced enough to colonize their own solar system, and had still not discovered any traces of sentient life, then we must be alone. It was a certainty, nearly accepted as scientific fact. Humanity was most definitely alone.

And just like all ideas birthed from human arrogance, we were wrong.

The first Time-Space Fabric Tear Engine is created.

(Widely known as a Tear Drive.)

Time to travel to Mars decreases from 15 hours to nearly instantaneous.

The Tear Drive is mass-produced for space travel.

Pax Terra Age ends / Galactic Exploration Age begins.

A small group of exploratory scientists on Mars discover evidence of an advanced ancient sentient civilization.

Remains of this civilization appear to be last occupied around 2700 BC.

Appears to have been a highly advanced civilization with space travel.

A Holographic map is discovered which portrays the Milky Way galaxy along with much of the surrounding universe in incredible detail.

The center of this Holo-map is left conspicuously blank.

The precursor technology we discovered facilitates creation of a method of travel which finally bypasses the faster-than-light barrier.

The DRE begins expeditions with this new drive, named the MatterFold Engine.

Massive expeditionary fleets named Colony Fleets are completed to be sent to explore our galaxy.

The advanced technology we had discovered on Mars now pushes terraforming technology to new heights.

(Terraforming a planet the size of earth takes roughly only one Earth year.)

The Colony Fleets discover more precursor ruins of what is now called the Origin Civilization, all over the Milky Way galaxy.

All ruins appear to have lost their residents around the same time.

No active sentient life is discovered.

2180

The largest Colony Fleet ever built is completed and named

DRE Colony Fleet Infinitum.

It’s mission is to find the home galaxy of the Origin Civilization and to find any other existing sentient life.

Increasing DNA evidence discovered at various ruins paints humanity as a “child” race of the Origin Civilization. This evidence is not well known outside the top secret clearance level of the DRE.

  Planned trip will take 10 years to reach “Center” of the Holo-map because of distortions in the Time-Space Fabric as well as having to change course to avoid collisions with planetary bodies and black holes. Once at the center, Infinitum will pull out of Fold Space and begin colonization, exploration and the search for the Origin Civilization home galaxy as well as any other sentient life.
