Prologue

It was an evening of jubilation for Alden Thorne, who had just been informed of his promotion to the coveted position of CTO at Nexus Innovations. Raindrops drummed on the sleek, obsidian surface of the Lamborghini Aventador as it raced down the dark and winding country road. A swell of pride and exhilaration coursed through him prompting his foot to press a little harder on the accelerator than usual.

Though the rain was not torrential, it sufficed to make the dimly lit road more perilous. The high beams flickered and scattered across the slick surface casting an eerie glow that danced and swayed, as if the road itself was coming to life. The gnarled silhouettes of trees seemed like phantoms, their shadows undulating like tendrils of some eldritch being. Beside Alden, Emily, his wife, sat with her eyes closed, humming softly to the cadence of the rain as her head rested against the window.

In the tapestry of Alden Turner's life, each thread had been carefully woven. Born into humble circumstances, he had been raised by a single mother who toiled at multiple jobs to provide for her family. This adversity had only served to fuel Alden's determination, and he set out on an arduous journey to change the structure of his weaving.

Long nights found Alden immersed in the arcane arts of software engineering, devouring the wisdom found in dusty tomes and digital repositories. Bit by bit, he crafted his own path, driven by a relentless desire to rise above the constraints of his past.

As the years unfurled, Alden's efforts bore fruit, and he ascended the ranks of Nexus Innovations. There had been several defining moments in his career, memories that echoed with the satisfaction of achievement. One such moment was when, against all odds, Alden discovered and remedied a critical software flaw that had eluded his entire team, saving a vital project from the precipice of failure.

Another indelible milestone in Alden's professional odyssey was when the mantle of leadership for a significant division within the company was bestowed upon him. At first, the weight of responsibility threatened to buckle his knees, but Alden drew upon his inner reservoir of strength and resilience, guiding his team through stormy seas toward the shores of success.

Alden's unyielding dedication and ability to conjure innovative solutions from the ether had garnered the respect of both his peers and superiors. His visionary approach to complex problems captured the attention of the company's upper echelons, and it seemed only natural when they selected him to don the mantle of Chief Technology Officer.

Stolen story; please report.

Emily, his constant beacon, had shone brightly through every challenge and victory. Her unwavering faith had been his bedrock. Through nights of self-doubt, failure, sorrow and defeat she was there. Through the sleepless nights, endless coding sessions, broken plans and unexpected emergencies, she was there. As he navigated the treacherous country road, his heart swelled with gratitude for the life he had forged and the woman who had been instrumental in its creation.

The silence inside the car was unusual, a stark departure from the soothing melodies that typically accompanied Alden's drives. His preferences swayed between the soulful notes of jazz and the pulsating beats of electronic music, both of which served to sharpen his focus on the road. On this night, however, the radio remained off, the void filled only by the muted patter of raindrops and Emily's gentle hum, as if the world outside had conspired to create a fleeting moment of tranquility.

As they navigated a particularly sharp bend, Alden's heart vaulted into his throat when the dazzling blaze of oncoming headlights engulfed his vision. A vehicle hurtled down their lane, its imposing form materializing out of the gloom. Panic surged through Alden, and he wrenched the steering wheel, desperate to evade the impending doom.

The world around them spun and twisted as the Aventador's tires relinquished their hold on the rain-slicked asphalt. Alden's final memory was of Emily, her eyes full of fear and locked on his in the moment before being sucked from the car. Her scream swallowed by the grinding of metal and shattering of glass as she vanished into the endless darkness.

Alden's eyes slowly opened. He found himself in a stark, well lit and featureless room. The light seemed to come from no source at all. The plain gray walls, empty of any adornment and unsettlingly flawless, left him disoriented. He looked down at the smooth metal table in front of him, its surface as perfect as the walls that surrounded him.

Where was he? What had happened? He was driving… then…

Emily.

He felt the panic rise to his throat again, his heartbeat racing, the adrenaline clearing his mind. His eyes rose from the table.

Opposite him, a woman clad in a meticulously tailored suit exuded an air of poise and professionalism. Somehow, he hadn’t noticed her before. Her warm, inviting smile served as a comforting contrast to the cold, unfamiliar surroundings. "Welcome to Solace, your slice of the afterlife," she intoned, her voice as soothing as a gentle zephyr on a balmy summer's day.

“I’m sure you have so many questions!”
