After healing and stashing his loot Eric once again set out. He hoped to use what little surprise he had left to isolate and slay a few more enemies before they came for him. The corpses were still where they had fallen which was a good sign. Meaning that perhaps they hadn’t been discovered yet. The reality of the situation was soon revealed. Streams of Bjorn Goblins were retreating up the stairs from the 3rd floor and back into the 4th floor apartments. When the last wounded goblin passed through the fire exit door it was slammed shut. The first thought that entered Eric’s mind was ‘what the hell could cause around 20 goblins to retreat.’ The next thought was ‘what if it’s coming this way’. Eric, showing surprisingly good judgement decided to leave off his slaying for the day.
Displeased with how the day ended Eric moped on the sofa. Not only was there a ridiculous number of goblins he needed to fight but there was something scary enough on the 3rd floor that scared the ridiculous number of goblins. He sighed heavily. In preparation for the next battle, Eric sharpened his weapons. The spears were his new pride and joy. The fist to the face in his last fight had taught him the importance of the additional reach. The rest of the day passed without anything interesting happening. That is if you discount the disturbing amount of time Eric spent caressing his new spear.
Terrifyingly the corpses of his previous opponents were gone the next day. He had passed the spot without realizing they were gone and it was only when he reached the 4th floor that realization kicked in. Something had travelled up the stairs. And for some reason he doubted that it was the goblins.
Peeking around the usual corner, Eric was both surprised and pleased to see the goblins once again out in force. With a distinct expression of fear, which sent shivers down Eric’s spine, the goblins were led down the stairs to the 3rd floor. At their head was a goblin a head taller than the rest. Obviously, the leader. With great trepidation, an unusual look on a bear goblin face, 20 heavily armed goblins headed down the stairs perhaps never to be seen again.
Decision time. Should Eric kick down the fire exit door and slay the remaining goblins. Or, follow the goblin army and find out what they’re fighting. Eric smiled to himself. “Eenie meenie miney mo, catcha tigga by the toe, if it squeals let it go, eeny meenie mo,” he whispered to himself. He ended up pointing towards the stairs down towards the 3rd floor. “Well shit.” Proud of his resolve Eric started down the stairs towards the 3rd floor. Slowly, he didn’t want to catch up to the goblins. It definitely wasn’t because he was terrified of what he might find. Suddenly the goblins on the third floor yelled and screamed. Definitely not.
It was chaos. The third floor was the site of a battle. Goblin vs snake. Each snake was perhaps 2 or 3 meters long. There were dozens of them. The snakes were guarding the fire exit door creating a bottleneck which placed the goblins at a ridiculous disadvantage. Fortunately or unfortunately the goblins had weapons and armor. Shoddy armor but armor none the less. Eric was peeking around the corner watching the madness. Goblins slashed and cut wildly when they came under attack. Occasionally, they would get too far ahead of the group or lose their balance resulting in instantly being overwhelmed by the snakes. The snakes themselves were terrifyingly beautiful. They were like a zebra, vivid white and black striped scales. Their oversized mouths bit deeply into goblin flesh. Their bodies wrapped tightly around their intended victims. The goblins in turn thrusted with spears or slashed with knives and swords. A united undisciplined mad rage which only added to the chaos. Eric gulped.
The bipedal creatures were slowly pushing through. The further they reached the more goblins which entered the battle at one time. Both snake and goblin corpses lay on the ground crushed under their feet. The battle was now out of Eric’s sight but he could still hear it. The drum of many feet and the incomprehensible grunting of goblin voices as they yelled in fear and anger.
Eric waited for what seemed a long while until his opportunity for slaying occurred. Truly he wanted nothing to do with the large battle happening within the 3rd floor apartments but killing a few wounded goblins… That he could do. Stumbling out of the third-floor apartments, all three Bjorn goblins had near life threatening injuries. One was covered in cuts and through the goblins coarse fur it was impossible to tell how deep the wounds were but… it looked bad. And bloody painful. The other two were even worse. One was missing his forearm and hand. It obviously wasn’t possible for the snakes to cause such an injury so it must have been friendly fire. The goblin cradled the wrist which was bound tightly by leather and honestly Eric had no idea how it was still alive. The last goblin was missing an eye and most of its face hand chest was bloody suggesting more cuts. The goblin stumbled woozily. Damn these goblins could cope with pain. The injuries were truly frightful. Eric grinned, “easy experience”, he muttered.
Eric retreated up the stairs and waited until the goblins were out of sight of any potential targets on the 3rd floor. As they reached the 4th floor and were about to knock on the fire exit door. Eric sprung down upon them. The unarmed goblins (in one case literally) were too easy a target. Eric spear took one in the side. Another thrust took one the eyeless goblin the gut. The last almost reached the door before his spear ended its life. Their low Hitpoints meant that they toppled over dead as soon as the spear entered them. “The things I do for experience.”, he whispered distastefully looking at his bloody spear. He went back to watching the 3rd floor. Waiting for his next target.

Two groups of two goblins came up to join the bodies on the 5th floor. They were too tired and wounded to provide opposition. As distasteful as killing them was, Eric tried to see it as eliminating potential enemies. With 7 new pouches to add to his loot stash. Eric retreated to the 5th floor for food and a brief rest. He would soon test himself against more dangerous foes.

A glass of coke half full in his hand Eric grinned at his new-found wealth of experience. The pouches added a significant amount of copper and silver to his loot pile. If only he knew what to do with it… Eric mentally shrugged. Spoils of war. That’s what they were until they actually gained value. Now he had to apply his status points. He had a feeling he would need it. “Status”, he called to open up the page.

He felt a little more confident facing his enemies. His knives would be more accurate and his spear thrusts defter. Simply wielding his weapons would come more comfortably to him. Worried but willing to persevere, Eric set out to clear 2 floors at once. Or die trying. Or retreat... retreating is an option. No need to be so dramatic.
