Deimos

Well hello, I am pleased you have popped along to join us.

Oi! I am talking to you! Yes, you - the reader. That's right.

Great, now we have that sorted, I wanted to ask if you like stories where the hero dies over and over again?

For me, this is the fun part. I do like watching their expression every time I run my blade across their throat.

Just to set the record straight, killing them is necessary for their advancement and I do go to great lengths to cultivate their training. Some of the other gods do not bother training their heroes at all, they throw them in at the deep end and hope they swim.

I am more benevolent.

Now, if you are questioning how this story is going to play out. Honestly, as much as I have high hopes for all my champions, they always fail me eventually. I do feel that it is only fair to warn you and this one Joe, well, he is just an average Joe. My last prospect, who had so much promise is now an Euphoria addict on Olympus. I left him there to his fate. I have no time for those who do not live up to my expectations.

Did your ears prick up when I mentioned Olympus? I know you mortals who reside on earth, have woven mythical tales about it being the home of the gods or some such nonsense. I hate to dispel your preconceived notions, but it is just another planet. One of five the creator made for our entertainment. Our heroes whilst traveling between worlds are responsible for the stories you may have heard about. You will learn the truth soon enough.

Very few make it through training and as Joe managed to kill one of my men who had done so, I am in desperate need of finding a replacement. An NPC killing a champion really does take the biscuit and should not have been possible. Yet Joe managed to do so.

Problematic, because one is knocked out when your hero’s in play fall to 0. The aim is to kill off all those belonging to your opponents. Only seven gods now remain in the game and I do intend to win. Ahaha to beat the Creator at their own game. You have no idea how much pleasure I will get from doing so.

Normally I choose NPCs who have at least something extraordinary about them. Good looks, athletic ability, and the promise of leadership skills. Something that stands out amongst the others.

Ah, you are likely wondering what the hell I am going on about. Eh, how an NPC becomes a hero?

Anyone not chosen by a god to be their hero is by default a nonplayer character. Yes, that is correct and makes you my reader, also an NPC. Do not despair, as gods are always on the lookout for possible challengers to use, who knows maybe you will do something to get our attention. We have many champions in play, one does not limit oneself to only one.

This brings me back to average Joe. I want you to know that my decision to record the progress of my heroes, has nothing to do with this one. He is rather irrelevant and only features as the first because he is my newest addition.

A likely mistake on my part. I have no confidence in this man and his story may be a short one. Yet fear not my NPC reader, there will be others and ones who will be more worthy of the honor I bestow.

My scribe – well you do not think a god will actually do the writing, do you? They have informed me that you may not want to hear about how Joe came to my attention and the fateful events which transpired. In case you are wondering this part has already happened.

I can understand why you may want to cut to the part where I begin training him. I am after all far more interesting than this rather pathetic specimen of a human. The thing is, I have not thought out how I shall go about turning Joe into something even closely resembling being worthy. I am also keen to begin recording my story. So the next two chapters will be dedicated to how I met Joe and why I chose him.

Besides a scribe should know their place and not be questioning a god. Ridiculous isn't it?

Whilst, I shall from time to time look in on you and chat. I will leave my scribe creative license to tell the story.

Should they not do this to your satisfaction, I want to know. Just drop a message addressed to Deimos in the comments and inform me of their incompetence. I will read them and act accordingly. You are also welcome to verbalize any possible punishments; a beating, a few days of starvation, walking on hot coals, and well anything really. A scribe can be replaced.

Any messages directed to me that I find amusing, I may respond to. For a few moments, I will lift you from your monotony as an NPC and let you become part of the game. A word of warning, do so only if you think you have what it takes to handle the transition to becoming a nonperson again. Such things are known to cause you, fragile humans, great misery. Obviously, any posts not directed to me will be dealt with by the scribe.

As much as I would love to hang around chatting with you, I do need to plan my strategy for getting Joe up to scratch.

Adiós.
