An Impossible Meeting
It was another beautiful morning as usual in my Paradise, the sole land still standing after the Apocalypse. The lack of survivors meant I no longer had to worry about setting History straight over and over again whenever the World was heading towards a direction primed for destruction. Basically put, I was unemployed with nothing much to do.
How ironic that I kept righting the flow of the World all in order to avoid destruction, but at the end of it all, the World still headed itself towards destruction all on its own.
Well, I guess not all on its own. Half of the reason for the World’s destruction I knew, but the other half still eluded me. Then again, it is of no concern to me now. I would like to just enjoy the last remaining years, or perhaps, decades or even centuries of this World and then….
And then, what….?
Right… I just remembered. I turned into a Godlike entity by will of one of the Gods of Covenant. According to a clause within the Covenant, the World shall remain alive until it naturally uses up its life force. Until then, a mortal chosen by the Celestial Palace will act as a proxy God and will do everything in his power to protect the World from destruction. For as long as the World remains alive, the chosen mortal will also remain in this World. If the World is supposed to remain alive for a million years, then I am to also live that long.
As I have already previously said ( to nobody in particular ), I chose not to save the World in the last Apocalypse, therefore, I have technically broken the Promise of the Covenant. That meant I should’ve died together with the World, but for some reason, I’m still alive and well. There is not even a sign of heavenly punishment coming down on me.
Enough chit-chat ( again, who am I exactly talking to? ). I should go start looking for some sweet fruits around my garden, and perhaps leisurely walk around the grasslands. I don’t really need to eat to survive, but I sometimes miss the flavors of food. After all, I was once just like everyone else: A mortal.
The house I built for myself is roughly ten to fifteen minutes away from the garden where literally all of the fruits and vegetables this World has to offer grows. You didn’t hear that wrong. Every plant-based food grows in this garden. Unbelievable? Probably, but think about it. I live on an island that's been floating for thousands of years already. Adding a bit more twist on top of that shouldn’t be that surprising.
Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
The morning breeze immediately greeted me as I opened the door leading outside, prompting me to give a warm smile in return. I walked at a slowish pace because why not? Nothing’s chasing me. Nobody’s waiting for me. After all, I am the sole legacy this desolate world has left. I can take all my time and it won’t matter. To me, what mattered the most was to give nature the appreciation it deserves.
I greeted the birds a Good Morning, but naturally, they only replied with a chirp. I’m sure they didn’t understand me, but it was satisfying enough to see them living their lives to the fullest. After all, the World below will never blossom ever again. The people and the creatures that have lost their lives will never come back no matter how much one wished for it. All those who died in the recent Apocalypse must be enjoying their lives in the Celestial Realm by now. Meanwhile, here I am. Still stuck in this ruined World.
I eventually reached the garden filled with the World’s bounties. My cravings tell me I should get some grapes and strawberries. I took a single grape and gave it a bite. The seedless fruit let out its juices rich with the flavor of sugar into my mouth, giving my tongue a pleasant surprise.
I figured that I could make some simple wine using these fine quality grapes, so I have decided to harvest them, but just when I was about to do so, two of the dogs I have befriended recently came running to me. For some reason, they were barking with hints of anxiety in their expressions. It was as if they’ve seen or experienced something completely foreign to them, and they didn’t know what to do.
“Hey, what is it? Is there any problem? Come tell me and we’ll fix it in a jiffy.”
The soonest I told them that, the dogs started running towards the direction of the grasslands. They would run, and then momentarily stop to look back at me as if telling me to “come follow us”.
I did as the dogs wanted and let myself be brought to the grasslands. I was already planning on spending sometime there anyway. The dogs were in a hurry though, so I guess I wouldn’t be having my leisurely walk today. I can always do it another day, so let’s just see what the problem’s all about.
As I stepped within the area around the grasslands, three more dogs came into view. They seemed to be speaking to each other, but I couldn’t understand dog language. All I knew was that they were sniffing something on the ground. The younger one was even licking it, whatever it was. Well, there was nothing poisonous on that part of the island, so all was good in that regard.
I went in closer to the source of the dogs’ anxieties, and found out something that was utterly unbelievable. So unbelievable that I involuntarily opened my mouth agape out of shock.
“How….. is a human here?”
I spoke to no one in particular. A person that looked very similar to humans, devoid of demihuman features. A small, innocent-looking girl. With long black hair, she wore a white dress which made her look like an angel paired with her dainty appearance. I could hear her soft breaths as she soundly slept.
The kind of scenario which I thought no longer possible happened right at that point in time.
An impossible meeting, somehow made possible.
