Mary Lynn…

The two boys lay sprawled on the floor at Mary’s feet. Stunned, she watched her guardian pocket their phones. Without a word, he lifted the shaggy-haired boy and shoved his unconscious body into the empty community laundry room. The whimpering kid, who had been so mouthy, cradled his broken hand, wincing and cowering as the older man approached. The guardian crouched down and whispered to the boy before he touched him, “If any of the information you have given me is a lie. I am going to find you later and heave you from this boat like the sack of trash you are.

“What are you?”

“A soldier and a sailor, you idiot. The fights I have been in didn’t happen on a video screen. Next time, think it through more thoroughly before you decide to act on the crazy conspiracy theories you see online. You sick murderous, fuck.”

Her guardian found what he was looking for on the boy’s phone as he scrolled through the videos they had taken. “I’m going to assume you idiots probably already posted your harassment of an old woman. A woman who is no longer alive.” He paused a moment. “You might want to think about tossing yourselves off the boat independently. I have a feeling that by the time we reach Spain, you are going to wish that you had done exactly that.” He shrugged. “I understand that the jails in Spain are quite difficult to be in.” He drew his foot back and kicked the youth directly in his rib cage. The young man cried out. “If I were you, I’d join your friend in the laundry room. They will be here to gather you soon. As the boy crawled toward where his friend was hidden. The guardian added his own face as an option to unlock the boys phone.

When he turned toward Mary Lynn he was all smiles.

Skin prickling with fear, she said, “You fight like a Wolf.”

He came toward her and helped her get up from the floor. As she settled in the wheelchair, he began to gather the scattered winnings from the polished floor. “Not all Bears have had the peaceful life your kind has had in those secluded mountains.”

“And Canada is fraught with danger?”

I never said, I grew up in Canada. He placed her earnings in her lap, unlocked her chair, and began to roll her forward. “I hope you don’t mind that dinner will be delayed. I need to inform the captain that a murder occurred, and not just a simple death.” He jerked his thumb back toward the door that hid the boys bodies. “He will be wanting to speak with those young men, and I’m sure he will appreciate that we have stowed them out of sight.”

Kennedy…

Kennedy felt the shift in the atmosphere, as the temperature in the room began to rapidly drop. Her hand was pressed to her belly. Her anxiety was causing their boy to spark and flip. She didn’t want to change in this cursed house. As much as she disliked her mother in law, she didn’t want to harm her.

A shadow fell across the floor and darkness began to fill the room, dimming the light that entered the space. Moments before, Kennedy had been watching the dust filter through the late afternoon light that spilled in through the windows.

A bitter taste filled her mouth.

Terry’s mom spoke, “She’s here.”

“Who is she?”

“The first.”

Lowering her voice, Kennedy whispered, “If she is the first, who are the woman and child in the mother’s room?”

“The last. My kin.”

Kennedy shuddered as she felt pressure against her skin. Acting on instinct, she pressed her lips together and held her breath. A crawling, frigid touch slid across the skin of her arm, and the baby lit up like a firework. Planting her feet firmly on the floor, Kennedy held them both in their current shape and stood up.
