Chapter Nine: Wonder
A thick pane of glass stood between her and the patient. The dull thump in her chest did not sound of fear but excitement. What new results would she find?
The white room she stood in blanked in her sights. Not that it was adorned with much in the first place. The ambience echoed with its name. Observation Room.
She couldn’t stop the shaking in her leg nor its incessant slap along the metallic table leg. The steady buzz of the lights above her calmed her eagerness.
Belligerent cries filled the room adjoining them. Just beyond the glass stood the origin of said scream. A patient chained to the wall.
The blonde man standing to her left kept his pupils trained at the screaming man. “Time?” His sharp voice made her quickly usher the stopwatch hidden under her palm out.
“14 seconds.” She watched the ticking hand with a veiled smile. The broad man nodded. The black t-shirt worn under his lab coat hugged his curves well.
She shook her head. There was plenty of time to ogle Dr. Stevens later. Her patient’s screams had stopped. The ticking clock signaled the approach of the 30 second mark.
Green eyes lit up as the man’s struggle against his chains ended. The patient bent over himself with a loud jerk of his bald head. The wires on his scalp tugged painfully taut as he slipped further.
The beeping screen to the glass’s left showed a mellow ECG line. “Patient’s blood pressure and heart rate have dropped significantly.” The brunette announced into the cold, black microphone in front of her.
The blonde folded his arms grimly. The shine of his brown eyes doubled through his spectacles. The patient who sat with unsettling stillness groaned suddenly.
His limp arms that rested by his sides bent unnaturally across. The loud crunch reverberated over the cackling speaker.
The woman’s legs tightened over each other. The black fabric of her skirt pulled tightly over her draped limbs. The growing excitement lifted her head from her palms.
Next, bent the patient’s shoulder. With a violent jerk to the left and then downwards, the bones churned over their own mangled pieces. “Transformation, is beginning.” Her breathy voice rushed through the microphone.
Brown eyes eyed the woman with disgust but did not linger. The prize was up front. “Dr. Eva. Restrain yourself.” His cold words did not deter the woman in the slightest.
Her eyes remained glued to the patient. A sudden jerk shifted the limp patient to his left. His spine bent unnaturally in a parabola before straightening and bending to the right.

The process continued from his lower back right up to the neck. When the man’s head turned more than possible to his right, a loud ping erupted from the monitor in the observation room.
Both set of eyes turned towards the monitor. The pallid line stretching across the screen was now rapidly shifting in its path. Climbing higher and higher. The numbers on the screen shifted, ticking proportionally.
A deathly chill settled among the doctors. Dr. Eva’s hand plopped back onto the cold metal table. The expression on her face conveyed it all. “Failure.” She whispered.
Dr. Stevens stomped his boot on the pristine tile angrily. “One more added to the score of hundreds.” He voiced ominously. Eva breathed in annoyance.
The man’s leg shifted before breaking with a resounding crunch. The jolting shifts continued across his body but not once did the patient scream in pain.
Dr. Eva pursed her lips. “You wouldn’t fail on me, right?” She murmured to herself. Dr. Stevens blinked. “The vitals read for themselves, don’t they, doctor?”
The woman stayed staring through the glass. Dr. Stevens growled at her petty ignorance. “Its your neck.” He uttered coldly.
“Report to Dr. Melman when you’ve completed witnessing your failure.” The words faded as he walked out through the stocky gray door. He shut the door behind him loudly, leaving Dr. Eva to her thoughts.
With a final lurch, the patient slowly raised its head. Dr. Eva’s breath caught in her throat as bloodshot blue eyes rounded exactly on her. The intense stare made the woman shiver slightly.
“He can’t see me of course.” She silently whispered to herself. The man’s head tilted to the side.
His sharp jaw lined with glinting sweat as it dripped from his chin. A tremor ran through his arms and the patient balled his fists. With a violent yank, he pulled the restraints off the wall.
Dr. Eva’s eyes widened in their sockets. “The transformation is this strong? The girl’s blood is richer than we anticipated.” She smiled toothily. “Dr. Melman won’t be as mad with this failure if I cite this.”
She pushed the plastic chair back as she got up. “I guess it is time.” Her voice resounded through the room. The patient’s head snapped in her direction.
Dr. Eva stared at the man’s reaction with surprise. ‘There’s no way he heard me through the isolation room.’ She thought to herself. Her heels clicked loudly as she walked over to the glass.
The patient’s teal hospital gown came into her view. “Such a shame.” She spoke eyeing the patient. “We could have spent some quality time together, honey.” The sparkle in her eye died as the patient snarled in her direction.
Dr. Eva shook her head in disdain. The creature quickly bent down and pulled the metallic restraints off his feet. The crimson shackles screeched across the white tiles with a wide trail. The doctor narrowed her eyes.
“He’s already attempting self-harm.” She breathed on to the glass. This time, the patient’s neck snapped towards her. Dr. Eva took a fearful step back. ‘Can he hear me?’
The creature snarled loudly and vaulted straight at her. Before the brunette could process the movement, the man broke through to the observation room. The thick glass broke with a loud shatter as the creature passed through it.
Its hands shot for the doctor’s shoulder. It dug into her skin as the two of them fell backwards from the impact.
The facility broke into a loud alarm and the white, serene room was doused in red.
Blaring alarms echoed with the woman’s scream as her mind registered the man stretched atop her. Her green eyes landed on the man’s glistening face. Ominous red light shined across his side chilling her spine to the core.
“Darling. Please.” She cried shiveringly. The creature bent over in a flash and dug its teeth straight into the unassuming woman’s neck. The consequent screams blared louder than the intrusive alarms across the observation room.
