Chapter 4: The Prodigy

The road towards the guild was bad. That is the only way to describe it. Aside from the fact that is was utterly boring we were riding in a fu**ing carriage. Do those people not even have the concept of suspension?

What I saw on the way was equally bad. The state of the world is much worse than I thought. I never visited a middle age type of world, because, let’s face it, what could I learn from a bunch of people who don’t even know about soap? Anyway, since I didn’t have a look at this type of “age” I had to do with second hand knowledge…which does not include the details.

The streets were made of some type of rock, I guess magic was involved to make a whole road out of it, but that was about the most civilized thing I have seen. I don’t know if that was a special part of the city or not, but crime was flourishing with pickpockets and thieves everywhere. The merchants were haggling for more profit than it would ever be allowed in a real society. The worst part tho, were the homeless children that were loitering the streets. It was heartbreaking seeing a 6-7 year old child look at you with dead eyes that gave up on life. I saw my father was also looking like he wanted to do something about that but there was no way he could save every kid in the world.

I gotta’ admit, I was pretty pissed seeing at the work I had to put in raising this planet’s rank. It’s not hard to go and “invent” a couple of world breaking technologies and magic…but that would not solve the world…even if the rank raises.

I was now determined to save this world. It did occur to me that our neighborhood was pretty clean, and there were no stray kids from what I could see. The answer to that question came from my grandmother. Using her influence as an adventurer, she opened an orphanage. That made me proud to be part of this family for the first time.

In front of the guild headquarters there was a throng of children and their parents.

???: “Hello everyone! My name is Frisk Roland. I am a teacher at Guild Academy and I will be responsible for todays’ test. I would like to ask you to submit your name and age into this box in the next 2 hours. After that we will begin the testing.”

The teachers’ voice boomed into the crowd reaching even us at the back as clear as if we were next to him. While I do get the need to use a bit of magic to impress people, why did he use raw mana to amplify his voice? If he used the wind to carry it to everyone it would have saved him a lot of mana and he wouldn’t have to scream. Mabey to show the academies superiority... Whatever let’s just get this over with.

Frisk: “We will now begin the testing!”

Frisk: “The test has 3 parts. The first part will test your knowledge of the letters. Second part will test your skills as either a mage or a warrior, remember that you need to be at least a C rank warrior or a D rank mage. Those 2 parts are actually the test to enter the academy. The last test is to see if you were born with an affinity to a special element like light or darkness or not.”

What. The. Fuck? Born with affinity? Are those people real idiots? Affinity is something you learn over the course of your life, how can one be born with it?

OH! The life they had before!

I suppose if they focused on one element in some of their reincarnations it would result to some of the insights passing on to the next life. I guess this is why he used raw mana instead of wind… he didn’t have wind affinity so he didn’t train it. Those people are simpletons! Hmm…I’m kind of proud of myself right now for figuring this out!

Silvia: “And what are you smiling at? Are you exited to get a nice affinity?”

Klaus: “Wha-?! N-no, I was just…Fuc-Yes mother, actually it was exactly that”

My mom gave me an odd look but I had no time for that. I had maximum affinity in all the elements! Even the other 7 said that I may understand some better than them…how the fuck do I explain that?

While I was brooding on my impending rise to fame, the teacher called for Zack. This made me snap back to reality.

Since we were family we were allowed to enter with him for the tests.

The letters test went as expected, he did have a great teacher!

Frisk: “Well than Zack. Let us test your rank as a warrior. Or do you want to test as a mage?”

It seems like the teacher also thought there was no way some commoner will be a mage.

Zack: “Can’t I just test both?”

Frisk: “Hahaha! I suppose there is no harm, most people want to hope for some talent in magic.”

Frisk: “Come here. This steel ball has been enchanted to show your rank as a warrior. Simply use all your strength to grip the ball. It will than show your rank on this plate.”

The enchants were decent, even if they were not hidden into the material’s essence. It’s not that hard to believe actually. I’m surprised they could even pull and external enchant with the level this society is at...Inborn affinity...HA!

Zack: “Won’t it break if I use to much power?”

You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.

Frisk: “Haha! Don’t worry. Aside from an S rank there is no one capable to even dent those balls! Now hurry up.”

Zack seemed a bit uncertain but gave his best anyway. After the results were shown everyone was stunned, aside from me of course. The runt used everything he had, he even enchanted his muscles with mana the way I taught him.

Frisk: “Y-y-you have A r-r-rank!” Frisk seems kind of rattled, hahaha.

Alyssas: “Honey did you hear that? Our son is a genius!”

Frisk: “Well, you truly are something. To reach A rank at this age…astonishing! I myself have reached A rank just a couple of years ago at the age of 57. Which was considered moderately fast.”

Frisk: “While it’s true that mages take longer to raise in rank than warriors, it’s still a very impressive achievement.”

Frisk: “I think the youngest A rank warrior was at the age of 14 when he reached that stage, and he was hailed as one of the greatest geniuses of our country and your boy here just overtook him. And by the large margin of 7 years. It’s astonishing! He may be the greatest genius of our country!”

Zack: “Hey! Can I have the mage test now? Big bro said we are mages so I want to see!”

Frisk: “What?”

Frisk: “Kid, if you are also a mage I will personally ask our principal to bring you to the main academy.”

Stephan: “What? The main academy? Don’t you have to be at least S rank to enter? And I have never heard of a child going there.”

Frisk: “While it’s true that the standard way to get into the main academy is to be S rank, there are special occasions where that can be overlooked.”

Frisk: “And to answer your second question, it’s a shame but our kingdom never had a child with enough potential to get into the main academy. The other countries tho…let’s just say they have more resurces. The Hertos Empire has send every year at least 5 children to join the academy. Those were all rank S! All below the age of 12.”

Stephan: “Whoa! That’s amazing! And here I was proud of being an A rank at my age.Hahahah…”

Hmm. Seems like this academy will be fun. I can’t wait. Hahaha.

Frisk: “Ok little Zack, put your had on this orb and it will try to draw out mana from your body, if you have it.”

Frisk: “the result will be displayed the same way as the warrior test.”

Well this is going to be fun. Show them your stuff runt!

Frisk: “…”

Stephan: “…”

Zack: “Yay! Bro, you were right! I’m a B ranked mage!”

Klaus: “Of course you are, what were you doubting me?”

Klaus: “And you are probably A rank as a mage as well but you used to much mana on that ball so your rank dropped a bit.”

Zack: “What? Really? Hahah! I guess I’m as strong as teacher than!”

Frisk: “What?”

Frisk: “No! There is no way you can be a B ranked mage also, alongside an A ranked warrior. That’s too much!”

Whoa…it seems like he broke…

Klaus: “Old man, he’s not a B rank. He’s A rank. He just used to much mana of the strengthening spell to squeeze the ball.”

Frisk: “What? What are you talking about? There is no way a child will know a secret spell like that.”

Klaus: “Secret? What are you talking about? That is just a basic mana enhancement on your muscles.”

Frisk: “Kid, did you really use a this strengthening spell on your hands?”

Zack: “The what?”

Zack: “You mean if I made my body stronger?”

Frisk: “Sure…”

Zack: “Yeah, I guess…But I did my whole body not just my arm.”

Zack: “Was that bad? Do I need to take the test again?”

Frisk: “No, no…just…can you do it again so I can see? I will try to feel your mana.”

Zack: “I guess…Done!”

Frisk: “Whoa!”

Frisk: “That’s it…This kid is a monster…”

Stephan: “Does that mean that he will go to the main academy?”

Frisk: “Of course! With talent like his reaching S rank is a given. The Guild will want to sponsor him without even having me speak with the principal.”

Frisk: “…A rank in both mage and warrior….astounding!”

Frisk kept muttering about something but Zack seemed a little odd.

Klaus: “Zack, what’s wrong? Don’t you want to go to the main academy?

Zack: “It’s not that…it’s just…Will bro come too?”

This snapped Frisk out of it and he put on a professional smile.

Frisk: “I’m sorry little Zack but if your brother is not as talented as you it’s impossible to get him permission to join.”

Frisk: “Anyway, let’s check your affinities now, shall we?”

Zack: “Ok, but can you test Bro after?”

Frisk: “Hmm…there are still a lot of people who need testing, but I suppose it won’t hurt, he should het tested anyway, right?”

Stephan: “Yeah…”

Frisk: “Ok so to test you affinity you will have to put your finger in this tablet. It should read what your soul works best with.”

Zack: “Ok!”

Frisk: “Hmm, interesting! You have both fire and air. While those are commune affinities, together they make a good combination. Kid, it seems you were born for greatness!”
