What I Have, What I've Lost

*Sigh*

Sighing in boredom for the umpteenth time, a young man flops back onto his bed, closing his emerald eyes at the harsh light coming from the ceiling.

It had been a very uneventful weekend for Sam, him having only stayed at home reading for the past two days. He was quite excited to get back to school in the morning: though the droning of the teachers voices were almost torture to him, school was the only place he was able to see his friend.

Yes, his frend. He had, since his first year of high school, only ever made friends with one person, and in the four years they'd known each other they'd become thick as thieves. If not for his friend, Mark, having persisted in becoming friends with Sam ever since they first met then Sam might have gone through the enitirety of his highschool experience all alone. Mark had driven him to do many things he might have never done on his own, some of those things would be as tame as being the first to sart a conversation, while others would be as crazy as skydiving; an endevour he had promised to never try again.

Sam was jolted out of his reminiscing by a tapping on his door, almost unheard. Sam smiled to himself, knowing who it was, and went to the door to answer.

"Hello little Raven, are you here for another story?" Sam asked in a kind voice, smiling down at his little sister.

Beaming back up at her big brother, Little Raven nodded her head and raised her arms to be held. He obliged, bending down to pick her up, bringing her to the bed. Setting her down, and after getting his well worn and well read storybook, he too got comfortable. After letting her crawl onto his lap so that she could also look at the book as he read, he opened the cover and started reading.

"Once upon a time..."

Samantha, the mother of Sam and Raven, moved down the hall way towards her room for the night. Noticing a light coming from a crack in her sons door, she smiled softly, having suspitions as to the reason the light was on so late. Softly approaching, she further opened the door, the scene that lay before her warming her heart; her son asleep, with her daughter resting on his chest, clutching the story book her son has had since he was his sisters age.

Turning the light off and closing Samantha went to bed, not noticing the pale glow coming from her sons body.

Sam woke up to a strange feeling, thinking he had to use the restroom, and stood up to make his way to the bathroom. Upon standing, Sam was surprised to find himself in a... what was this? He was standing in what he could only call endless white, with no discernible details anywhere, and though he could feel the floor he stood on if he were to look down it would look just the same as everything else. He was starting to get scared, but then came to the realization that he may just be lucid dreaming. Excited at this rare opportunity, he started thinking of all the things he could do before waking up.

"As much fun as being slingshot into a lake of gelatin would be, that is not the reason you are here, Sam." A voice abruptly speaking startled Sam out of his fantasies. Looking around, Sam laid eyes on a strange being in a grey robe, standing about 30 feet off. 'Strange, I could have sworn the voice came from right in front of me.' Dismissing the oddity from his mind, Sam called out.

"Um, hello? Who might you be?" After asking, he absentmindedly pondered whether or not this was something he actively thought up, or if it was just a random dream figure. Looking at the strange person's face Sam noticed it was just a blurry mass. The figure spoke.

"Well, though you might not believe me, I am what you would call a god. Before you refute or question me, I will tell you what I am here for. Recently, I and another God had gotten into a fight for unimportant matters. I won, but in his final moments, my adversary had released a last ditch attack towards me. Unfortunately for him, it was easy to avoid, and so he died having not accomplished anything. I of course could not just let the attack he released go off on its own, so I followed it. Unexpectedly, it was just a bit faster than I could travel, and so I ended up following it to your planet, or more specifically: your room. I'm sorry to say that although it had travelled far enough to almost entirely die off, it still had enough power that when it struck your body, which had an infintesimally small chance of happening, it had complety erased your body from your plane of existence. Since it is my fault that the stray attack had gotten here to begin with, I felt the need to help you. But, I am sad to say that I am unable to reasemble your existence in this world. Creating in a foregin gods territory, especially one as powerfull as the one governing this corner of existence, is seen as rude; even if it's just replacing what had been been lost. So, as an attempt to help you, I am going to place your soul into a new vessel, one on my own world. This is all I can do for you. The reason I am telling you all of this is because I am going to give you the choice of what you want to be reborn as: the planet I govern is one very similar to those fund in fantasy stories here on earth. So, what'll it be, Sam?" Finally finishing his long speech, a thing for which Sam was grateful, the man sat waiting for his answer.

Though the man had taken a while to finish speaking, Sam had listened to all he had to say. After hearing it, he still firmly believed he was having some strange dream: after all, this dream had been very similar to the many stories Sam liked to read on his free time. In light of this realization, Sam was lost on how to answer the man's question so, he went the easy route by telling the man to make it random. Wondering if he would actually dream something random, Sam didn't notice the man smiling, nor did he notice the man slowly fading from view. Finally, Sam slipped into darkness, unsespecting of the fate that awaits him for the near future.
