Chapter 2

"Ok Cersin. Get on the table, and we can begin," the doctor said. We were in a large brightly lit doctor's office with my dad. It was complete with a doctor's table (where I sit on the doctor does things to me) and a doctor's desk. It smelled vaguely like hand sanitizer, and light filtered through the blinds. I put my arms up and climbed onto the table, why they were so tall, I'll never know. The only people who could actually sit on them would be the adults.

"It'll be alright Cersin. It won't hurt," my dad said, trying to reassure me. I didn't know why my dad was trying to reassure me. I already knew it wouldn't hurt. The doctor had slammed his hammer into my knee enough times I had grown used to it. That and putting that cold circle on my chest. I still don't know why he did that; aren't doctors supposed to help people, not hit them with hammers?

"Now. do you know what will happen?" the doctor asked, looking into my eyes with a vaguely curious expression.

"Yeah," I said. "You're going to hit me with your hammer again."

"No," the doctor chuckled, "Not today." "Today," he said, suddenly serious, "you will awaken your powers."

"So I can do things mommy and daddy do," I asked.

"Yes, you can," the doctor responded, relieved for some reason. "I will put my hand on you, and you will gain your powers, as your parents did and their parents, and their parents before them."

"Ok," I said, excitedly. If what the doctor said was right, and it was right, because he was a doctor, then I could do what mommy and daddy did. I could move things with my mind, I could make a light whenever I wanted, and so much more! The doctor put his hand on mine and looked into my eyes, as if asking permission. Something in my eyes must have told him yes, because the next minute, his hand tightened around mine, and the world around me disappeared, as if I had closed my eyes.

Slowly, I saw. The only way I could describe what I saw would be to call it a forge, but I had never seen a forge before. I wondered what it was. Suddenly, a concept buried itself in my brain, and I knew. Hearth Forge. Created by The Predecessors to forge the universe from the ashes of their world. I knew it as surely as I knew the sun would rise tomorrow or that one plus one is two. Like how I understood the Forge, it understood me. We understood each other the way two siblings, no, twins understood each other.

Slowly, it faded into the background, or maybe I flowed back to where I came from. It was the first, and only, time I saw the Hearth Forge.
