Prologue: Hunting

Prologue: Hunting

On the border of Idaho Falls (where the harsh desert sands met the greenery carefully grown and irrigated by the residents of the fair city) a handsome man emerged from the shadows.

He looked down at the utopian city and sneered "Soon, soon you will be dying in the ruins of your once beautiful paradise." He adjusted the sapphire cufflinks (fashioned in the shape of a bull's head) on his expensive suit.

He was meticulous with his movements as he pulled several round eggs from his briefcase. The light of the moon above was caught in the eggs and they glowed with internal malicious light. The illumination revealing corrupted insects sleeping within. "I suppose it is time for me to get to work."

Plate armor (as black as pitch and red light glowing from the cracks) formed around his arm, a metal collar locked around his throat and thick chain connected the two.

He extended his armored hand and growled "Come to me, my Legion. Answer the call of your master!"

The black energy around him coalesced into demons of various shapes and sizes, things with horns and spikes, an unholy energy emanating around them. His orders were firm and laced with his corrupted demonic power "Carry these beyond the barrier at all costs. Run!" The corporeal evil spirits charged towards the city, as they crossed the border a curtain of light slammed down from the heavens. Turning the slower infernal creatures to ash, the fast demons that slipped past the barrier made a mad dash towards the city.

A winged angel dove towards the invaders. Her white robes snapping around as her spear turned more demons to ash, her shield slammed one of the larger demons back, giving her time to bring her spear around and skewering the snarling beast. Sacred fire expanding in its lungs and searing through bone, the infernal beast turning to ash that drifted in the breeze rolling down from the mountains on either side the valley that the sleeping metropolis sheltered in.

The angle flapped her wings to rise into the air, searching for the source of the demon legion. Nothing but cracked earth and cacti, same as it always was. She looked towards the heavens and vanished in a stream of light.

The man smirked from his seat on a boulder "Red herrings work on the frilly feathers every time, killed the pawns but forgot about the queen." He smiled to himself and walked back to his parked corvette. “This is checkmate. You just don’t know it yet.”

As he drove into the night one of the corrupted eggs started to hatch.
