Contract

Rai Briggs woke up earlier than his usual time of rising from the bed. Stretched his arms wide and jumped for a while to relieve himself from his sleepiness.  This time he went over the kitchen and prepared some hot water for his daily morning coffee, went to his small table and sat down. He then lit a cigarette and puffed out a thick smoke. It was still dark outside and the scenery outside his window changing bit by bit, some lights went on and others went off. He can now hear the clattering of plates and the crackling noise coming from a cooking pan. This moment reminds him of his family back home.

He finished his coffee and washed the cup that he used. He went straight to the bathroom and started taking a bath. While taking a bath he always takes a moment and thinks about his plans for the day. After his preparation, he took his wallet out and took a glimpse inside it. The wallet is almost empty, this was all that remained from his savings and he knew for himself that if he didn’t find a job as soon as possible then it will be his doom.

Unlike the others, Rai is lucky enough to step in college for 2 years. College was fun, his grades are pretty normal, though there are some subjects that he failed due to his absences. He was almost absent most of the time due to his addiction in gaming. It was like a drug that will slowly consume you if you didn’t moderate yourself in it. When his father learned about his addiction, he was forced to stop in his studies.

“You don’t have a dream! What do you want to do with your life? Play games till you get old?! Get out of this house!”

Those were his father’s last words for him. Even though he wanted to retort, he kept his mouth zipped up. How can he retort back? Will he say I want to become an adventurer like in the games he played? Of course not, because that statement will make him look even more stupid. Even though he felt alive while playing as the adventurer in the games, he never said it out loud, he didn’t speak his mind. The only words he said were “I’m sorry, I failed you. I must go.” He packed his things and left the house, as he goes, his mother hugged him and asked him to forgive his father and secretly gave him some pocket money. “Mother, I am the one who should ask for your forgiveness. I brought this to myself. Someday I hope father would forgive me. I shall go.”

It’s been a year since that heart breaking scene came to pass. He faced the harsh realities of life that he never experienced under the loving care of his parents. He took jobs with a petty cash salary just to survive every day. From being a labor to a delivery guy to a convenience store staff and other on the spot hired jobs. With no stable source of income he always hunted for a job with decent pay, but with no luck within his pocket, he was still unemployed.

That early morning he left the house hoping to find a job. He entered every building and establishment that might need an employee. Time flew by like it was yesterday, it was already dark. He was tired and hungry and decided to go home and try his luck tomorrow. As he walks, he passed by a computer cafe and decided to surf the internet. Coincidentally he recognized one of the icons in the desktop. It was the game he played before, he then started to play the game for an hour. “Brings back memories. I am glad that my account is still active.” That one hour of playing was extended into two, to three and soon he was tired of playing and decided log out.

He went outside the cafe and saw a convenience store, ordered some beer and snacks to fill his stomach. He chugged down each and every bottle of beer that he ordered; soon he was drunk and decided to go home. He checked his wallet and all of its contents were all gone.

“Hiccup. Well, I’ll leave tomorrow’s problem to tomorrows me. Hiccup. Hahaha”

Even though he walked like he was dancing he still managed to get home in one piece. As he opened the door of his house, he noticed that it was not locked, but he didn’t panicked and just let it be. He switched the lights on and noticed someone is sitting in his chair, wearing a strange looking mask that covered his upper portion of his face. Even though his consciousness is still hazy, he spoke to that someone.

“Brother if you want to steal on me, then steal just don’t steal my life. If you find something that is worthy in your eyes, take it. That is if there’s something worthy in this house.”

Rai went straight to bed to rest his tired body and spirit, but that someone just sat in his chair gazing at him like a child enjoying his new toy.

A smile appeared on that someone’s face, and then he spoke.

“Rai Briggs the human. Do you want a job? I have been observing you for a while, and I know that you are seeking to find a decent job. I can give you one if you like.”

Rai didn’t respond. He thought to himself that this someone is a stalker.

“...”

“...”

“...”

“What kind of job?”

“You just run errands whenever I told you to. Very simple isn’t?”

That someone stood up and walked near the now lying in the bed, Rai.

“So, you are saying that i will be your errand boy? What kind of nonsense are you saying? Huh?! If you’re not here to steal things then who the hell are you?!”

Rai’s patience is running short to this annoying someone.

“How rude of me, I am Hakk a god from a distant world. I came here to bring salvation to your pitiful life.”

“Hahahahaha a god you say?! You must be joking right? Tch. Tch. People these days are getting crazier each day. Hahahaha I pity you Hakk the god.”

Rai retorted with sarcastic remarks.

Hakk smiled once more.

“This is the first time that a human pitied me, a god. I like you Rai Briggs! Tell me, what is it that you wish for?”

“You’re still going on that joke? Okay Mr. God, if you really are one, why don’t you give me a new life? Or bring me on this different world or whatever is that nonsense that you are saying.”

“Before we go on, I would like you to sign this contract of agreement as a proof that you agree with my proposal. Just a drip of blood will do.”

“Yeah Yeah get on with it already. I want to rest now.”

Hakk took out a piece of paper with strange symbols written within. With a flick of his finger a cut appeared on one of the fingers of Rai. Blood dripped out; Hakk didn’t waste a single moment and put the piece of paper to where the blood is dropping. His smile now turned into a devilishly grinn.

“Let’s meet again Raig Briggs. It won’t be long. Bwahahahaha!”

Fading into the night with his evil laugh, Hakk’s figure disappeared like nothing was previously there while Rai soundly slept through the night.
