----------------------------------------

Kiefer had just returned home from a tiring day at the lab. The night was young and the sun just set over the water’s edge. He stared out of the window of his room, located right near the Cliffside of the cove’s wing. It was a magnificent view overlooking the ocean on one side, and the port city on the other.

The city was still bustling despite the onset of nightfall. Street lamps kept the paved roads and sidewalks lit through the night, houses still had little yellow lights peeking out the closed windows. The port city had grown considerably since he was last here and with the incoming winter, the air was chilly.

It has been 3 years since he first found himself in the cave behind the waterfall. Kiefer chuckled to himself as he remembered all that he went through to get to where he was. All the people he’s met, challenges he’s faced and decisions he’s made. They all led him to this point in his life time and he wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Wanting to get a better view, he climbed up a drop-down ladder and opened an overhead hatch that led to the roof of his moderately small house. From up there, Kiefer did not need to move to the other side of the house to get a change of view. It was a full 360 view of his surroundings and the sky.

A chilling autumn breeze caressed his face as he draped a warm blanket over his shoulders, a warm cup of coffee in his hand. The twin moons were reflected off the uneven ocean surface and celebrations could still be heard from the nearest inn just at the edge of the port city.

Then he heard a knock on his door just as he was about to sit down and get comfortable. Peering over the edge of the roof, he saw some little children gathering outside his door. They were all dressed up in adorable little costumes, holding pumpkin bags in their hands.

“TRICK or TREAT!!” They all yelled in unison.

Kiefer made his way down to his front door, and took out a huge sack of candies from his PD. As he opened the door, he saw all the children gathered on his front porch with a couple of light orbs floating around above their heads.

The first child to step up looked to be around 10 to 11 years old. She had shining silver hair and striking green eyes that stood out on her pale face. Her costume was a pure white onesie with tiny claws for fingers. From her back sprouted 4 floppy wings and her costume had a tail with a fanned tip.

Bending his waist, Kiefer placed his hands on his knees and asked the little girl, “And what are you supposed to be?”

“I’m Isana! And I’m a Dwagon!” She replied enthusiastically. Kiefer chuckled and grabbed a handful of candy from his sack and placed them in Isana’s pumpkin carrier.

“And what about you young lady?” Kiefer now squat down to face a little girl at eye level. She had shoulder length black hair that turned light blue at the tips. She had on her back a pair of large fluffy white wings.

The little girl was around 5 or 6 years old, and she hid shyly behind her big sister. She peeked out from behind Isana’s back and quickly hid again when she saw that Kiefer was looking at her.

“Her name is Shearwood! I call her Sher. She’s a little shy but once you get to know her, she is really cute!” Isana introduced her little sister, as she received more candy from Kiefer’s outstretched hands and placed them in Sher’s basket.

As Kiefer stepped forward to pat Sher on her head, he suddenly felt a stinging pain in his arm, only to find a young boy about the same age as Sher biting onto him. Staring Kiefer in his eyes, the boy finally let go and huffed, before pointing his finger at Kiefer and yelling.

“Don’t touch my sister you paedophile! She’s scared of strangers! And give me my candy!” The boy yelled, trying to snatch the candy out of Kiefer’s hands. However, Kiefer was faster, withdrawing his hand and glaring at the rude boy. He was dressed in a black cloak with red flames detailed on the rims of the cloak near his feet and around his hood. The boy had almost no presence at all and Kiefer did not notice him until he was bitten.

“I’m sorry for his rude behaviour!” Isana quickly apologised, “His name is Desir, and he is Sher’s older twin. He was just trying to protect his sister, so please forgive him”

“I see, well then that’s not a problem.” Kiefer replied, still rubbing the bite mark on his arm. Kiefer then reached into his sack and handed Desir his share of candy.

Standing back up to his full height, he looked as the 3 children left his porch, only to have his front door flooded with more children. This time, a girl in a bright red and orange chicken suit came up to him, pulling along an unwilling girl with a fox mask and a costume with 5 tails that dragged on the floor as she walked.

“Mister! Please help me sister and brother! There’s a bully who is trying to take their candy!” The red chicken girl pleaded.

Behind the 2 girls, there seemed to be a fight going on between the other children over their place in the queue. There was an older boy with dirty brown hair that was arguing loudly with a younger girl and boy just a few steps away from the door. Bringing his sack of candies along, Kiefer headed over to see what was wrong.

“NO! I’m older! So you should let me go first!” The older boy yelled, pushing the younger 6 year old boy back. He would have almost fallen over were it not for another girl in a pitch black chicken suit that caught him. It would seem that these 3 children in chicken suits were all siblings while the older boy without any costumes on was bullying them.

“What is going on here?!” Kiefer demanded in a loud voice as he glared at the group of noisy children.

“Mister! Drigor tried to cut the line in front of us! And he isn’t even wearing any costume! He shouldn’t be allowed to take any candy!” The black chicken girl yelled.

“Wha--! No! I came together with you guys! I’m older so I should go first! And I Already said I need to go home soon so why can’t you just let me go first!?” Drigor yelled back, trying to argue his case.

“Ok children. All of you stop fighting or no one gets their candy!” Kiefer yelled back, trying to drown out the sounds of the children.

“Mister! Can you please quickly give out the candies? I need to go home quickly or my Big brother will not be happy. He is so disgusting, always making other people do things for him. I really hate him! Can you give me a little more? Because my big brother will surely take my candy from me.” Drigor turned to Kiefer and pleaded.

“Fine.” Kiefer conceded, “But just this once. Next year I want to see a costume from you.” Kiefer demanded, placing a fistful of candies in Drigor’s basket before watching him race back down the street.

“And for you lot, here, gather around so you can get your sweets.” Kiefer motioned for the 4 children remaining to gather around him. He then placed some sweets in each of their baskets and watched their faces light up with smiles.

They thanked him hurriedly and went back to the town. Kiefer’s house was the last one they visited and now all their baskets were filled to the brim with chocolates and candies. As Kiefer returned to his house and shut the front door behind him, he suddenly remembered something and muttered to himself, “Oh. I forgot to tell them to eat in moderation. Wouldn’t want diabetes to run around in my city.”
