Prologue

"You know how this ends?"

"Of course I do."

Sitting across from me, sipping what appeared to be tea, was an ordinary businessman. Well-groomed, if a little greasy, he gave off a professional air. His age was indeterminable. He could be in his early twenties all the way to late forties but he could be older. Putting down his tea on a convenient coaster he gave a satisfied smile.

"It is refreshing to deal with competent clients. I will give you about four years to complete your... task." He waved his hand as if fishing for the right word. "Since you have already signed we should start immediately." Another waved hand, but in a much more deliberate motion.

There was a loud tearing sound as if construction paper was being ripped in twain. Off to my right, there was a hole being torn in reality. Despite this, there was no other fanfare to be found, no flickering lights, no whirlwind tearing through the apartment, no demonic laughter, or heavenly choir.

"Regardless of how it looks, maintaining the portal is tiring, enter quickly."

Knowing the businessman, Markus, would likely renege on their deal if I took too long I quickly gathered my belongings and walked through.
